Overview

About the property

Bungalow, 2 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

The Hana Ocean Palms Bungalow is located across a meadow and road from one of Hana's most beautiful oceanfront pools - Waioka Pond (Venus Pool). The property is nestled in a coconut palm grove and surrounded by almost an acre of lush tropical flowers, fruit trees and bamboo. Pick avocados, papayas and bananas and gather vegetables and herbs from the garden. This charming bungalow has all the comforts of home including a fully equipped kitchen, a gas grill for barbequing, high speed internet access, and a phone for local or long distance calls. The master bedroom has a queen bed and the other bedroom has two twin beds. The bungalow has two screened porches, one with a hammock for an afternoon nap, and the front porch with a double bed looking out to the ocean. Fall asleep listening to the sea from the screened porch and awaken to the sound of the wind in the palms and birds singing. Original oil paintings by a local artist, warm natural wood and bamboo, luxurious rugs and bedding throughout.

The bungalow is about one mile from Koki Beach, famous Hamoa Beach, and three miles from quaint Hana town. It is about a 15 to 20 minute drive to 'Ohe'o Pools ('Seven Pools') in the Kipahulu section of Haleakala National Park. The national park has abundant fresh water pools and waterfalls, hiking trails and a cultural hike to a restored ancient taro farm.

About Albert Zeman

I have traveled and lived all over the world, and moved to Maui some 25 years ago. Though I lived on the other side of the island, where I did landscape architecture and design, Hana always has had a particular draw. Eight years ago after selling an ocean front house I moved out here. I also am a boat captain and offer sailing charters in the summer in the Pacific Northwest and the inside passage.

I consider myself an artist, teacher and an adventurer.

Albert Zeman purchased this bungalow in 2004

Why Albert Zeman chose East Maui

Hana is unique in all of Hawaii and sometimes called the 'Last Hawaiian Place', Once you brave the beautiful Hana Highway, you will find yourself in another world and unlike the rest of the island feel you are truly somewhere else.

What makes this bungalow unique

Aside from the magic in the land here and the Aloha spirit of the people, most visitors feel this to be a very restful and rejuvenating place. Fresh air, beautiful grounds, great sounds and fragrances. You are surrounded by fantastic walks, close to great swimming, stunning scenery and simple nature. The food is delicious. Fresh fruit and vegetables as well as fish are available year around.

These four days were the highlight of our trip to US.

  • 5 of 5

Excellent location for people who enjoy spending a few days in a jungle atomsphere. Venus pool is in walking distance as well as an untouched black sand beach (requires some climbing). Hana, the general store and the famous Hamoa and Koki beaches are within 5-10 min driving distance. The bBungalow was very tastefully decorated and all equipment worked well. Very good and kind owner and housekeepers!

Owner's Response: What a great family to Host! They were so kind, clean, and respectful and it so good to see that they were excited to explore Hana and the surrounding area! Would have them back here at the bungalow anytime.

We very much enjoyed our stay in the Bungalow

  • 5 of 5

Stayed in July, 2017

Location: Minutes from Hana. 6 Hana Highway miles to Haleakalā National Park (Pīpīwai trail to the Waimoku Falls and the Seven Sacred Pools at Ohe'o). A short walk to a natural pool (some rock climbing is necessary). Walk a couple more minutes and you come to a cliff over the ocean where you can see the sunrise (I even saw a turtle). Those in a walking mood can walk along the coast to Hamoa Beach (so the caretakers told us).

Caretakers: Bree and Taylor (I hope I got their names right!) were very friendly. They were quick to tell us about some of the secret locations in the area. They also made sure we had all we needed. She opened 2 fresh coconuts for us

The Bungalow: The only knock on the bungalow is one window that was missing a screen and couldn't be closed. We put a towel in the cracks and did not have any bug problems from it. Outside that, it was great. 1 room with 1 bed (all solid walls), 1 room with 2 beds, 2 solid walls, 2 screen walls (breeze!). 1 bed on the front lanai (mmm...breeze). A screaming infant in the inside room, did NOT wake a 4 year old in the second room (could be heard, but not enough to wake him). We enjoyed the inside hammock (who wouldn't?).

Grill outside (worked just fine). Stove inside (worked just fine). Large selection of pans (the one I grabbed was in good shape). Fun cup selections for the 4-year old). No dishwasher (fine by us). No AC (breeze/fans did fine). The washer/dryer were high efficiency with a huge capacity. Oven (didn't use). Beach toys/towels/buggie boards (kept the 4 yr old busy). Wifi. Limited cell service only on road-Verizon.

Kid Friendly: Mostly. The main rooms had large throw rugs that covered most of the floor. Unsteady babies/toddlers should have mostly soft places to land. There are, however, many tings that they could get into at their level (kitchen-stove, drawers, cabinets, other shelves and such). We didn't have any problems with our 10 month old (and she did enjoy the doors and drawers in the kitchen). A watchful eye should be enough to keep them safe.

Our Arrival: There was a bowl of fresh local fruit in the kitchen for us when we arrived. Bananas, papaya, and passion fruits. Delicious stuff, but it doesn't last, so eat it up fast. We were also given banana bread the first morning of our stay (yum).

Bugs: It's a rain forest. They do exist. 1 roach, 1 spider, many mosquito-eating geckos.

Summary: We were very happy with our stay and would love to come again!

Could not more highly recommend this property.

Location is secluded and unbeatable.

Proximity to local swimming hole makes you feel just that... like a local. Nearby quaint little eateries and good swimming/ surf at hamoa beach. Host(s) are fantastic and helpful. Decor and appointments are quaint but authentic and welcoming. Feels like your old family beach house. If you're after a sterile, contrived, mass produced cattle class Maui experience then this place IS NOT FOR YOU. If you're after a truly peaceful, comfortable, relaxing and as close to an authentic Maui experience as you can expect to find: then book this place. Stay at least three nights:) We were four young professionals in our 20s and cannot recall a single negative element of this place. Favorite accommodation in the Hawaiian islands.

Beautiful property, great location

Everything was perfect about this rental; great details and spacious. Living in the jungle is awesome. There are tons of mosquitos on the east side however, so be warned.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

Loved the location. Owner/caretaker both very helpful. So close to Venus pool, black sand beach, seven sacred pools, Charles Lindbergh grave, red sand beach, Wianapanapa, lava tube, black sand beach, Hanoi and Koki beach and many more sites too.

The house is very cozy just right. Well equipped. Stopped for groceries on the way and had great time.
