Cottonwood Corner, Kate and Craig were the best

  • 5 of 5

When we walked into Cottonwood Cabin we felt like we had walked into our home. The location was out of Seward into the secluded beauty of the real Alaska. Kate and Craig have made sure that everything is available to make your stay comfortable - including leaving a basket of goodies which were very welcome after setting on Seward Highway for 3 plus hours due to a serious wreck. Even though Kate and Craig had company of their own, they took every care to make sure our trip was memorable, even telling us where we could find an eagles nest, a weir, and the best food around - things only a local person would know about. We instantly felt as though they were old friends. Their gardens gave us a taste of home (we'd left our gardens in Missouri just as production began). The only bad thing about our stay at Cottonwood Corner was it was too short and made it nearly impossible for our other vacation rentals ti match up. And they didn't come with Kate and Craig. If you are going to Seward, make sure you stay at Cottonwood Corner. You will be guaranteed a great place to stay as well as great people to meet. Thanks again for everything you did to ensure our vacation was a memorable retreat.

1. The listing description was accurate, easily found, and provided more than we asked for.

2. The property was extremely clean and well maintained, and surrounded by trees and beautiful gardens.

3. Customer service went beyond normal, providing personal recommendations and super care.

4. I would recommend this property to family and friends. In fact it would be the first place I'd recommend. I wish we would have spent more time in Seward with these great people in this great cabin.

5. We took the 8 1/2hour Kenai Fjords cruise including Fox Island Dinner where we met people from around the world and saw lots of wild life, the Alaska Sea Life Center, walked to Exit Glacier, visited an eagle's nest, spent an hour watching salmon at the weir, and walked through shops in town and visited fishermen at the boat harbor. We ate at the Cookery, Chinooks Waterfront Restaurant, Exit Glacier Salmon Bake, and two other places - not a bad meal was had anywhere. Even though we were there in the summer, we suspect the long winters require a lot of super good food be available. Seward, the Cottonwood Corner guest house and her people, and the fine food makes Seward a place we'd love to go back to.

Perfect Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful property, house and owners.

The house is even better than pictures, tastefully decorated, spotless and fully equipped. Kate left such an array of breakfast and snack goodies to start us off. We were lucky enough to be given permission to enjoy veggies from their gardens, including sugar snap peas, celery lettuce etc. We did run short of gas one evening and before I hung up Craig was over and fixed the problem. We were three couples and agree would love to revisit Cottonwood Cottage and the surrounding area.

Stay here!

  • 5 of 5

This very clean and most welcoming cottage is where you will want to stay while in the Seward area. We were greeted with fresh blueberries, yogurt, homemade granola, bagels, crackers and fresh salmon cream cheese spread. It has two bedrooms up and one down with a bath on each floor. Only 10 minutes from Seward’s restaurants and activities. The mama moose and calf grazing just across the road was the icing on the cake. If we are ever in this area again, we will definitely stay here! This was one of our favorite VRBO’s.

Charming, Cozy, Complete, Quiet, Convenient, Cordial

  • 5 of 5

What a GREAT find in a three bedroom house close to (~a couple of miles or so) "downtown" Seward. Kate and Craig came over from their house next door to personally greet us. They are both extremely cordial and knowledgeable about the area, having lived there for many years. Kate gave us many tips for local wildlife viewing that all were spot on. They provided a virtual buffet of treats for breakfast and snacking. The cabin is even more charming than the picture. Two bedrooms are located upstairs and share a full bathroom. Another bedroom is located downstairs in the back of the house. There is another full bathroom downstairs, plus a charming living room with wood-burning stove, fully-equipped kitchen, cute deck and patio with fire pit off the front door, bird feeders (and many beautiful birds!) as well as a two-car garage for renter use. And much more - wow! Craig came over within moments after we called to check on an item we had a question about. The railroad tracks and picturesque stream are a short walk from the house. The train sounds were never obtrusive. All in all, a wonderful place to call your "home away from home"!

About Kate & Craig Turnbull

In 1985 Craig joined his father, Jack , on a trip to Alaska to visit the past. During World War II, while serving in the United State Army, Jack had been stationed at Fort McGilvary on Caines Head located at the mouth of Resurrection Bay. He was anxious to share his memories of that time with his oldest son. Caines Head is now part of the Alaska State Park System and is accessible by boat. Maintained trails allow visitors to explore what is left of the old army fort.

Jack traveled a second time to Seward, this time with our whole family...what a trip! Our dream was born and 1990 found us selling our Southern California home, packing all of our belongings in a U-Haul truck and setting out for the Last Frontier. Three years later, Jack joined us and together we built the cabin that is now Cottonwood Corner Guest House.

We have lived in Seward for 23 years and are still in awe of the pristine beauty that surrounds us. We want to share it with you.

Why Kate & Craig Turnbull chose Bear Creek

Cottonwood Corner Guest House is located in a quiet rural neighborhood. Our grounds are beautiful and we enjoy spending time outside. There are also special little treasures that can be found just taking a walk around the block. The Guest House is a short walk from Salmon Creek, a salmon spawning creek; a walk up the hill leads you to some of the best blueberry pickings in town; exploring the meadow nearby you will find bog rosemary, Alaska violets, sundews (Alaska's carnivorous plants), and so much more. The forest is full of wonder.

Wild animals do roam through the neighborhood, so we ask that you always stay aware.

Our location is a birder's paradise. Right outside your window you will be treated to a view of our resident chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, pine grosbeaks, juncos, siskins, and more!

Craig and I have enjoyed feeding the birds and gardening for many years. We have lovely perennial beds and include many native species amongst our cultivars. We also plant vegetables and herbs in the raised beds outside the Guest House. Our summer is short, but our days are long and the garden beds fill in quickly.
