The main floor of the house features a large, cheerful kitchen/family area, a delightful living/dining area that opens to a tranquil veranda, and a master suite that features a 'star-gazing window' and a private deck w/ spa. The community of Bonny Doon is known for its scenery, mild climate, vineyards, lack of traffic and proximity to pristine beaches, surfing, golf, equestrian facilities, bicycling, birding, the Santa Cruz Wharf and Boardwalk, Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary, UC Santa Cruz campus, fantastic restaurants, eclectic shops and unique music venues. We are less than 20 minutes from Santa Cruz and UCSC. It is quite literally a vacation paradise.

About us: We are a -young- ;o) retired couple who enjoy adventure and travel ...always on the go. Our children and grandchildren live all over the world. My husband is a former small business owner (commercial printing company) and is the inventor of a successful golf product. I worked many years as a law librarian and continue to do specialized investigative research for select clients. Bonny Doon is our home 6 months of the year.
Pat Pfremmer purchased this chateau / country house in 1980
We love it here, and our family and friends like to come and just sit and stare, there is always something to see.
We searched the Western States for 'the perfect place' and believe we found it. We like being near towns and activities, but we also want to be away from traffic and crowds. We also like the proximity to San Francisco/San Jose Bay Area and cultural events.
Bonny Doon is a very loosely organized rural community, an ephemeral oasis, much like the classic musical/movie, 'Brigadoon' it is more a state of mind than a place.
Tranquil, serene beauty, incredible views, a Feng shui place for the body and mind. Lots of wildlife, the morning calls of the Valley Quail, the hooting of the owls at night, the occasional cry of coyotes, cottontail rabbits, deer, fox, bobcat, ...The most beautiful trees, three incredible redwood 'cathedrals' sometimes called 'fairy rings'. We are surrounded by State Parks and State Beaches yet we are not 'isolated' in the sense of conveniences. There is a good restaurant just down on the coast, 5 minutes away.
For our vacation we were looking for a house that was close to Santa Cruz but a bit more isolated. What a great house this turned out to be. It is simply gorgeous and such a bargain for all that you get. This is easily a multi million dollar home and the architecture, grounds, amenities are beautiful. There are so many hidden spots in or outside the house where you can relax with a book and feel like you are in paradise. Bonny Doon is a neat little area and not too far at all from shopping etc (especially on the coast side). We were able to spend a day in Santa Cruz and also a day at the beach in Capitola. The owners were very kind and included things like robes for all the guests and a great selection of books. This was our best VRBO experience yet!
If I had read and absorbed the reviews more closely, we would have been better prepared for this truly idyllic escape from the city. This property was absolutely everything a beautiful heaven/haven of a home should be. Reason number one is that you can indeed simply enjoy the property and "chill" among within the design and surroundings. We actually agreed that we would rather have spent more time cooking, reading, napping and meditating. Just simply escaping the rat race. The small notes and considerations were so welcoming -- on the day we arrived, there was even a copy of my hometown newspaper. There was so much to do within a 90 minute drive and we did all those things -- but on another trip there, we will plan to do very little. This is one of lifes little blessings -- including the truly personal touches that validate the note of "mi casa es su casa".
What a wonderful, peaceful place! Pat was the perfect hostess who was accomodating, helpful and available to answer any and all questions. Tree Tops is 5 star all the way. Spacious and well-appointed. This home is highly recommended and we're grateful for the amazing attention we received. Many thanks!
My husband and I relished our 3 nights at Tree Tops. Even prior to our arrival Pat was attentive and vigilant. There was a last minute hot water problem for which she tracked us down to offer us our money back-then she had the problem fixed before we arrived. It was a pleasure to be "at home" as a guest at Tree Tops. The fountain was bubbling its welcome outside, the home is well kept, spacious and beautifully appointed and decorated with love. It was fun to look around at its interesting architecture and decor and have the use of spices and oil for cooking and all the kitchen ware we could ask for. The master bed was comfortable with a thick mattress top. Plenty of nice linens and pretty and absorbent towels. The views of the redwood tree ring cathedrals and stars were heavenly from both bedroom and sunflower bath tub (so relaxing after a full day of hiking in Henry Cowell State park!) Dinner on the deck was peaceful and relaxing as we shared a glass of wine and artichokes under the cheery lights strung around the deck. The views of the trees and distant ocean with its breeze were calming. It was fun to see quail and bunnies in the yard and even a coyote in the distant valley. The internet worked well. Easy access to nearby parks for hiking and to beaches for exploring tide pools in Natural Arches Park, walking along Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz and seeing elephant seals at Ano Nuevo. We felt like pampered "friends" who'd been invited to stay at this lovely home for a retreat.
This rental is amazing and has it all. We had 3 kids and two adults and we did not need one thing on our stay except food and wine! The house is HUGE and very tastefully decorated, the kids had there own room to watch TV and play videos downstairs. The outside has an amazing BBQ outdoor kitchen area, the location is breathtaking. I highly recommend this rental and I don't usually write reviews. Santa Cruz is a short drive but when you are there you feel totally secluded and very private! Can't say enough, the renters are very nice and on top of everything!!!
We had a great stay at Tree Tops in Bonny Doon from Mid December 2014 through Mid January 2015.
Of course Santa Cruz is a great place, lots of unique dining areas, the wharf where we saw a breathtaking sunset and watched the seals-a drive up highway 1 to SF on a day when many surfers were out. My favorites, Davenport landing beach and the UCSC arboretum, are close drives.
Tap water tastes really great, no need to buy bottled water
A great library, no need to bring reading material
Very comfortable beds
Large master bedroom upstairs with hot tub off the deck. Downstairs has living room with big screen, two bedrooms and bath- almost separate area so very nice for couples or in our case grown children who came to visit over the holiday.
House is natural and scent free
Fully equipped dining area with stemware, cloth napkins, dining and serving dishes- outside grill and fireplace- great for entertaining family and friends.
Quiet and private with views of boats passing on the ocean and wild life to watch-we enjoyed use of the binoculars and telescope.
Upstairs deck with comfortable seating where we spent lots of time
Fast Wi-Fi Internet throughout the house
ATT cell phones didn’t work well but we used Skype and Facetime audio- I heard that Verizon is the best service for the Santa Cruz mountains.
I highly recommend this HomeAway and hope to return soon.
Ideally located on the Central Calif Coast, mid-way between San Francisco to the north, the Monterey Peninsula and Big Sur to the south. The area is considered to be a vacation paradise, with year-round moderate temperatures. Redwood forests, deserted beaches, unique little get-aways ..it is all here.
