About Nancy Brenneman

My husband Dan and I have been cottaging on Bass Lake since 1969. It has been our dream to share our little piece of heaven with others for years. Our dream has finally become a reality. We hope you enjoy our lakeside retreat and the surrounding Traverse City area as much as we have over the years. Welcome.

Nancy Brenneman purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Nancy Brenneman chose Traverse City

It chose us, family memories, growing up as a teachers kid, spending our summers, sunning, boating, and swimming. When the opportunity came up, it was just a natural fit.

What makes this cottage unique

You are 10 minutes from downtown Traverse, yet you may think its Northern Canada by the lake views. The nature, deer, wild life, and fishing are awesome. Boat launch nearby, and dock on property. Quiet and relaxing and fun for the kids.

Terrible experience with property owner - false advertisement of WIFI availability

  • 1 of 5

The house itself is ok and is in a good location. However, we had an extremely unpleasant experience with the property owner, Nancy. The day after we checked in we noticed there was no or very limited wifi availability. There were instructions in the cabin on the wifi to connect to and password. The network provided had no more than one bar strength and would drop within a minute of connection. I had one of my devices indicate it was ‘out of range’. I text Nancy and she proceeded to tell me “You are in the north woods. try moving around (she) found the best reception at the table on the deck outside”. I indicted that I needed wifi for the week of our stay in order to work remotely, I can’t be expected to sit outside to get my work done. I told her there is a wireless modem inside the cabin with excellent signal strength, but I can’t connect. She told me the “wifi is not coming from the cabin”. When I connected to the wifi inside the cabin, the webpage indicated ‘Your account is past due’. Charter, the cable company, has the ability to provide internet at this premises, she just doesn’t have it as part of her service package, even though she has the equipment. So Nancy’s home address is across the lake and she is either piggybacking off her wifi or a neighbor. She proceeded to tell me to go to a coffee shop about 3 miles away or to use my cellular data to use the internet. I told her this was unacceptable and asked we check out early and get refunded for nights not stayed, as she was in breach of her rental agreement that indicates wifi will be available. When I was finally able to reach her on the phone she said we could leave early but she would not refund our money. She also said that the rental agreement does not say ‘where’ the wifi will be available, it’s not her problem if we have to sit outside. She said there was nothing more she could do. Mind you she never came to the property to try and assist. I contacted Homeaway, there was nothing they could do but file a formal complaint on the property for misrepresentation of services. Lesson learned, ALWAYS book via credit card on VRBO, never send property owners personal checks for payment. Homeaway couldn’t do anything because of this, because it wasn’t done with ‘book with confidence’. I wish I had the ability to post our text message exchange, clear proof of how remarkably unpleasant and unhelpful she was.

Owner's Response: Again, I am sorry Amy had such a bad experience. I have had this rental property for 5 years, and I have never put up with such a "spoiled brat" in the years we rented. I was over to the cabin (she did not know this). I got on line next door on either side of the cabin and even 20 yards away. 2 hours after she left I went in the cabin and sat at the table and got on line immediately. I have miles of texts showing I tried everything I could to help her. Three days worth. She was not open to any other suggestions. Even if I called a service guy, he would come out and say you have internet, but the signal is week. Try moving around. You cannot help someone who is unwilling to work with you. As far as the cable bill, it is paid up to date. How dare she contact the cable co. Stay home next time Amy, with all the conviences that city life has to offer.

Nice place - horrible owner

  • 1 of 5

We have stayed at this place for four years. The owner has never been the best. Responses back to emails always took multiple days, no phone number provided, and not too friendly when we stayed there. Unfortunately this past summer reached a breaking point. Without getting into too much detail the best way to describe the owner is unhinged. We did mail our check in the day it was due after being reminded so that was on is. However, the aftermath was the worst situation I have dealt with from a level of both respect and dealing with a rational person. The owner rudely asked with 10 plus question marks where the check was 2 weeks after I mailed it, I emailed her asking if I had the correct address and offered my phone number ( because she doesn't provide hers), 3 days later she sends an email threatening to cancel our vacation and take our deposit, the same day she calls me and says she got the check. Come to find out she gave me the wrong address and the mail finally was forwarded to her. After I told her that I did not appreciate her emails she hangs up on me. When we stayed that week we did not see or hear from her the entire week. Once we ended our vacation we followed all the check out rules and more. Did the dishes, took out the trash, picked up everything. 15 minutes after we leave she sends an email saying don't come back because the place was a mess like it was the previous year ( first time ever hearing this). It took her over a month to send my deposit check back even after I politely asked on the status. She was clearly playing games at this point.

Avoid this place! Even though it is very nice, the owner is clearly not in the right state of mind and/ or is not cut out for dealing with renters.

This is our 3rd time staying here. The cabin has everything we could possibly need. Kids loved playing on the beach and evening camp fires. The cabin is clean, well cared for and we have never had an issue with bugs. We look forward to coming here every year!

Quiet and relaxing

  • 4 of 5

The cottage had everything we needed. Internet and cable were not working when we got there but owner did what she could to get the repair man out there. It was working by Thursday but to be honest really did not miss the TV at all. We have unlimited date on phones so not having the internet wasn't a big deal either. Lake is wonderfully quiet and relaxing, not even busy on the weekends. It's super close to another very clean and fun lake, Silver Lake and quick, easy trip down the road to Traverse City for all kinds of fun and entertainment. We will be back!!!

Just what we were looking for!

  • 5 of 5

We come up to Traverse City multiple times a year, and this cottage is by far the best we've stayed at. Just what we have been looking for. Great price, on the lake, with a beach! The cottage is clean and updated! Nancy is a very friendly host. Can't wait to go back!

Family Get Away.

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was perfect for our family, it had everything we needed for the week. The hosts were great and checked on us while we were there to make sure we didn't need anything else during our stay. The kids enjoyed catching fish from the dock, swimming, and using the paddle and row boat. The evenings were great sitting by the lake enjoying the Michigan summer. The cottage is in a great location close to many dining options, shopping, and local attractions. My family loved this place and is looking forward to visiting again.
