Clean But Old and in Need

  • 2 of 5

House was clean. Bathrooms are very small. Not suited for more than 6 without making reservations. 12 would be in line all day. Thermostat has lock on it. Too cold all the time. Had to close many vents. Check -in not until 4 P.M. Office closes at 5 P.M. Check-out 10 A.M. with a list of things to do that would take hours to complete. Most cleaning items required not provided and we don't travel with a vacuum cleaner. There was a broom, a dust pan and some glass cleaner. Couldn't see out of most of the windows for the dirt. We reported 2 windows broken as well as a chair the morning after we checked in. Edisto Reality rep. came out but nothing was done while we were there. One pane ready to fall into the bedroom! Yard is full of debris and very uninviting. Sliding door to rear porch very hard to open due to filth in tracks. This could be a great place if the owner really cared to spend a little money or maybe he needs a different property manager. Edisto is a great place with no commercial development. We'll be back but we won't be staying at this property.

Owner's Response: Hi Chris. We’re sorry you seemed to have a difficult and uncomfortable stay. I wish you would have contacted us about some of your concerns. Please know we care very much about the home and have made and continue to make renovations, improvements and repairs every year. In the last six years we have replaced all of the kitchen appliances and all of the furniture, installed a large outside shower, gutted and completely renovated the main bathroom, replaced the front door, screened in the large front porch, added satellite TV and Internet with Wifi, installed an HD flat-screen and DVD player, stocked a reading & video library, replaced light fixtures and fans, screened in the front porch, purchased new deck furniture, purchased a new outside dining set for 6 for the rear porch and replaced the charcoal grill with a Weber. In addition, the interior and exterior have been repainted and the entire home is power-washed twice a year. We replaced the Central AC unit several years ago, had the ducts system professionally cleaned, and installed a wifi thermostat. The thermostat does indeed have a lock. We had guests one hot summer turn it down to 55 degrees. This caused the unit to run continuously until it froze up, failed, and had to be repaired. Our guest binder explains that if the temperature is uncomfortable, they only need to call and we will adjust it. You’re the first guests we’ve hosted in six years that said the home is too small despite you’re only being a party of four. The pictures we posted were chosen very carefully to illustrate the layout, décor and condition of house, and we believe they accurately reflect all the living spaces inside and out. Prior guests with much larger parties remarked how the house accommodated them very well with everyone having their own space. With regard to the yard, I agree there can be debris despite being mowed and cleaned weekly. Our home is located in the South Point area which known for the wooded bike trail and dense vegetation. Most believe it is the most scenic area on the island. However, all it takes is one strong storm and all those beautiful Palmettos and Live Oaks shed. Finally, Edisto was hit pretty hard the last two years by heavy storms in 2015, and Hurricane Matthew last Fall. We were fortunate and only suffered minor flooding—we had to replace our washer and dryer. But rest assured that we are back on track with our plan to make our home a great place for families to vacation together.

Very well appointed

  • 4 of 5

The house was great. The only suggestions I have are to change out the tub surround in the bath and some landscaping so that when you're sitting on the deck you have something to look at. Also maybe a few serving pieces in the kitchen. We had a great time and loved the house!

Owner's Response: Hi Alice: Thanks for the feedback. I am very glad you had a great time. Your suggestion regarding the tub/shower surround is a good one and is on our Spring 2018 to-do maintenance list. It is our hope and intent to completely remodel that bathroom in April 2018. Stay tuned. With regard to landscaping. We are considering some options. including re-sodding, beds, and other items. However, given the climate, we would have to install a full irrigation system and at least 15 cubic yards of additional topsoil. Do-able, but a major undertaking for down the road. In the meantime, we hope all our guest enjoy the Palmettos and live oaks.

Incredible Relative Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at the Relative Paradise, the location was amazing and it just had a very cozy, relaxing feeling about it. We had 6 people there and you never thought you were crowding anyone at all . We plan to go back again next summer for sure. It was a very short walk to the beach 5-8 minute walk to the beach which was our highlight of the visit.

Great value for a large family

  • 4 of 5

We chose this property because of the large space available and the bunk beds in one of the bedrooms. The property itself is fascinating and has obviously been tastefully added on to. We brought two families down and packed the house to the gills with 4 adults and 8 children. Never did we feel like we were cramped or stepping on each other. The kids really enjoyed the movies and the novelty of using VHS tapes... "How do you start the movie over?" REWIND! The covered, paved carport was great for a small kiddie pool that we brought and the outdoor shower was great when some of the younger kids got into the mud during a trip to the sound. How can you be mad at a muddy kid when you have such a nice, heated outdoor shower? The kitchen was well furnished and the various porches were amazing to get away from the madness of the indoors.

Key points (positive):

Bike/running trails directly behind house. Rent a bike and use it every day. Awesome, easy access to beaches.

24hr Grocery store on island is great and prices are reasonable

Fresh water can be obtained from the city hall building less than 3 blocks away

Laundry room downstairs perfect to keep dirt and mud from inside

Visit Botany Bay for some truly outstanding nature sights! That beach is amazing!

Mattresses in master suites desperately need replacing. I have a bad back and it was utterly painful to sleep on. This was easily the worst part about our trip. Sleeping on a rock hard, squeaky mattress actually made me dread going to sleep at night. The kids' beds were just fine.

Tap water is really salty, even after filtering. Do NOT make coffee or tea with it. Get fresh water from city hall. Not really a big deal.

Bring dishwasher soap as it is fairly small compared to most newer units. Just takes a few extra cycles to wash everything when the house is full.

Owner: Consider adding some hammocks or swings under the home to encourage more outdoor activities. Otherwise, we truly enjoyed our stay and your property will be high on our list of recommendations, but PLEASE get those mattresses updated. After a day of chasing kids, I want to be snuggled in a nice bed while on vacation, not struggling for sleep. Also, you may want to have someone look at the power sockets in the living room and dining area. Some of the plugs fall right out as they are worn out. Possible fire hazard, but really easy to fix. Would definitely recommend, overall!

Owner's Response: Hi Elizabeth (again): Thanks for staying with us this April. You picked a glorious time to be at Edisto. Since we purchased the property several years back, we have been making regular upgrades and improvements every Spring and Fall during the offseason. We completely remodeled the main bath last fall, and just completed screening in the front porch and replacing all the upholstery on the deck furniture last week. We added seven additional deck chairs as well. We will look to replace the mattresses at the next opportunity, and I love your idea of hammocks/porch swings down below. UPDATE: Main Master bedroom has a new mattress and boxspring; and th troublesome power outlets have all been replaced! Thanks again for staying with us. Dean

Family relaxation

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing week at Relative Paradise. The weather was amazing...only a sprinkle of rain and temps in the mid 70s....perfect weather for shell hunting and riding our bikes(some of which we rented from Edisto Essentials) all over the island. We made a couple of trips to Edisto State Park and Botany Bay, as well as an evening visit to Beaufort for the drive in movie and into Charleston for dinner one evening. Can't wait to return to Relative Paradise in the future. The layout of the house worked perfectly for 2 families, one with younger children and one with older kids.

Owner's Response: Hi Elizabeth. We are so glad you had a great time with your family. That is precisely what we have set up the home for--relaxing and making memories with those you love most. I was there this past week--we screened in the front porch, replaced all of cushions on the deck furniture, and added 7 Adirondack chairs for the porch and sundeck. I hope you will visit with us again and make more memories. Until then, have a great Summer. Dean

This was the first time I ever rented a house at the beach. My grandchildren from Oklahoma had never visited the ocean. They had an awesome time together with their SC cousins and memaw. We enjoyed watching the sun come up and set as well as collecting buckets of pretty shells. We visited the few local attractions and traveled to Charleston for a day. I glad that there was little shopping and amusement opportunities like other beaches. This meant we spent time together as a family rather than money for someone to amuse us! The house had a well supplied kitchen and plenty of room for all five adults and six kids. There were a few minor repairs that need made like holes in the screens, blinds that didn't work and it's hardwood floors need refinished. Overlooking these few things, made this a rewarding time together with family.

Owner's Response: Family reunions are one of the many reasons we love our home, Relative Paradise. Its layout really works for family groups--the bunk room off on its own helps give adults privacy from the kids. Thanks for the feedback on the work needed. When we purchased the home three years ago, we knew that it was a serious "fixer-upper". Each off-season we have tackled at least one significant project to bring the home new life. This past off-season we completed a complete gut-job of the main bath--new tub, vanity, granite counter, sink, fixtures, and installation of ceramic tile floors, lower walls and shower surround. Our project for next season is still up for discussion--your feedback is precisely what we hope to hear. Thanks very much and we hope you will say with us again.

About The Owner

This home was purchased by two teachers, a retired Army officer, and a former Marine. We are all related, hence the name 'Relative Paradise.' We enjoyed renovating this home together as a family, and we hope you will get to experience it with your family, as well.

The Owner purchased this house in 2011

Why The Owner chose Edisto Beach

This house is located on The Point which has the best beach on Edisto Island. We like the low country charm and peaceful area. There are beautiful sunrises and sunsets. It's amazing that you can see both from the nearby beach.

What makes this house unique

You can be with nature and enjoy the wildlife including the dolphins, pelicans, sea turtles, and more. Bring your children or grandchildren to collect unique sea shells and create memories of a lifetime.
