About Thomas Ayling
My wife Adriane and I began managing this wonderful house in the Summer of 2016. We take pride in offering a great home stocked with everything a guest could need for a nice visit to the Berkshires. When we are not ourselves enjoying the house we spend our time visiting museums, concerts and hiking. We live full time in Boston where we both work and are raising our daughter.
Thomas Ayling purchased this House in 2016
Why Thomas Ayling chose Richmond
We provide a fully furnished home minutes away from all the Berkshire attractions and a short walk from Richmond Pond where we have deeded lake access.

House was recently renovated , clean and nicely furnished with comfortable beds and good layout. Close to a pretty lake. TV and WiFi worked well.
Super location, comfortable home, really great stay!
This place is awesome- As described and well worth it! Scenic location- A quick walk to the lake. Amenities offered are as listed and explained- there are plenty of fans and a window AC unit in the main room which kept the area cool and comfortable. We had great cell phone reception (with att & boost mobile). Psyched that the house was equipped with all the kitchen accessories and appliances to make it feel like home, and really appreciated the use of the Roku. A very nice and relaxing retreat. The property and home is obviously loved- it was we'll-kept and clean. Aside from the comfortable and relaxing accommodations, the canoe and lake access is very special. It's location is right in the middle of much that the Berkshire and area has to offer- very close to Lenox and Tanglewood (we enjoyed Alta for lunch and shopping). Also went to Great Barrington to eat at Prairie Whale for dinner. Super location, comfortable home, really great stay!
shabby and dim lit property
The owner stated in the description "No pets allowed," but as soon as we stepped into this place, my wife, who is allergic to pets, had a bad reaction. On a close inspection, my daughter found balls of cat's hair under the bed stuck to the carpet. We were forced to leave the house and transferred ourselves to an Inn near by.
Our overall impression of the place, aside from this unfortunate event, is negative. The place has few lights and all of them are dim at best. The house worn out and tired, contrary to the delightful look of the house in the pictures.
My wife and I take pride in offering a clean and well maintained property for guests to enjoy in a beautiful location. We have a strict no pets policy and as long as we've owned the home no dogs or cats have been in it. The home is professionally cleaned between each guests stay.
Our house is accurately portrayed in the photos included in our listing. There are several tall birches and pines around our home which may leave it in the shade at times, but we find them to be a great part of the experience. We also have plenty of lamps and lights for night.
It is unfortunate that the property was not what you wanted, but your experience was very different from the other guests we've had. I would submit that if someone has severe allergies of any kind, home sharing may not be the best choice for them.
Unfortunately, this may be the first review. I wish that someone had given me a warning. We rented the property in July of 2016. It was warm as it can be during the summer in New England. I emailed the owner prior to renting the house asking if it would be comfortable enough for sleeping and my asthmatic child (humidity is a problem). I was assured by the owner that it was cool enough even without air conditioning because it is in a shaded, wooded area.
The indoor humidity was consistently in the 78-82% range. The indoor temperature was excessive (average of 80˚F) and the two available fans did little to mitigate the heat. The highest temperature and humidity was in the bedrooms making sleeping impossible. We spent as much time away from the place. I cannot evaluate the heating system as there was absolutely no need of additional heat.
The key to enter the house was not in the location stated in the email. Calls to the owners needed to be made to ascertain its whereabouts. The first call was to the owner, Tom, who didn’t answer and then to the co-owner, Barbara, who did. During this time we were standing outside in a torrential rain storm without sufficient cover.
The dishwasher racks had been painted so that anything washed in the dishwasher needed to be rewashed by hand to remove paint flecks.
There is no water view whatsoever from the house. We did venture the hike to the water but “the beach” was already overtaken by a less than family friendly group, so that was the end of that.
The best I can say is that it is a roof over your head and a bathroom. The bathroom had just had the toilet replaced (as I was informed via email). The tub enclosure had black mold at the seam and the drain was not screwed down.
For the high rental fee / cost I expected better. There is no air conditioning, no WIFI / internet, no phone, no signal of any type in the area. There is Time Warner cable local stations only.
It would cost less to stay in a 4 to 5 star hotel and be much more comfortable. There would also be WIFI and possibly a pool. You may even get a decent night’s sleep – just not in this house.
It is unfortunate you did not enjoy your stay at our house. While we have substantially upgraded our property since your stay it should be said that nowhere in our listing at the time of your booking did we say we provided wifi, cable, internet, air conditioning or a phone. When you inquired about these things to me directly before booking I let you know that they were not included.
My wife and I take pride in providing a clean and well kept property for our guests. 2016 was our first year renting out our house in Richmond and we acknowledge that we had some growing pains. It should be said that we now have cable, internet, air conditioning and a landline.
It is unfair to call our property “abysmal” and "little more than a roof over your head" because it is a nice home in a great location. The house is exactly as it looks in the photos and as it is described in our listing. It provides guests with a great place to take advantage of all the Berkshires have to offer at a good rental rate with access to a beautiful pond.
I wish you luck in your future home sharing experiences.
