Amazing

  • 5 of 5

This property is on a small paved road which allowed us to walk and jog. There is very little traffic.

There are no loose dogs running around so walking is pleasant.

The yard worker maintains the property daily, There are many kinds of flowers planted. It is obvious that Raphael wants to create a beautiful spot for his guests.

I think others have remarked on the bargain price of the Villas. A boat rents for $100 a day in town! A car is a minimum of $65 dollars a day! The car and boat are included in the Villas rental No added expense. The airport pickup is free and the washing machine is free. There is free internet. There are free fishing rods and a free cooler. There is television and movies available for free. Plenty of hot water for showers.

There is an unobstructed view of the lagoon and the mountains across the bay.

The neighborhood has very, very few homes and the few that are there are well kept. We loved the open airy light filled feeling of the neighborhood.

There are houses on only one side of the small road. The other side is the lagoon. So lovely.

The Villas are a bargain in every way we discovered.

Adventure, Peace and comfort

  • 5 of 5

While the other reviews pretty much cover the comfort of staying in one of Raphael's houses, I would like to add that this island and this location makes for a truly different kind of vacation. A relaxing one. As a family (we were 2 parents, 3 children and a grandmother) it would cost us quite a bit to stay in even the most reasonable hotel in French polynesia. Staying at the Villas Bougainville which offered us a car, a small boat and a three bedroom air conditioned house made this fun vacation very affordable. a great spot for 3 couples or a group of friends.

Why should you go to a small island like Huahine instead of one of the big resort islands? it is a matter of preference but we like to travel and see how the people who actually live there do. Huahine is a lush garden of an island with most of its industry being farming and fishing. the few small hotels cater to only a few dozen tourists at a time. In staying at the Villas we were living in a house alongside local people ( with plenty of privacy on the 70 acre grounds, often eating out at the local food trucks and sometimes cooking at home with the abundant supplies of the local market ( warning, like the Tardis, it is bigger on the inside).

There is plenty to do on Huahine for a week's stay and all of it is easy to get to and close. There are very few cars on the roads and they are polite drivers. we visited the Marae, the sacred eels, beaches that we could only get to by boat ( along with the multimillion dollar yachts) and still had time to come back for leisurely afternoons playing on the dock, taking a hike in the rain forest, or being given a personal tour of the vanilla plantation and being shown how they are pollinated by hand.

We have never had such a relaxing time. Raphael was beyond accommodating as we changed our time of arrival and extended our stay for 4 extra days. You will wish you could too.

A Perfect Kind of Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Villas Bougainville was just the perfect place for our family vacation on Huahine.

The dock (right across the street) was a neat place to hangout during sunset and watch the setting sun hit the surrounding mountains and coconut trees to create this vibrant orange colors.

Although VB (Maroe Bay) is about a ten minute drive from Fare (main town), the cars made transportation easy...boats were another convenient way to explore the laid-back island.

Most of all, thank you to Raphael who made our stay so enjoyable. The airport greeting (and departure) were such extra special touches of his warm hospitality. The warm welcoming (he gives lots of useful island info) made us feel at home and he ensured we were taken cared of during our stay. If we had a concern with the house (ie. kitchen stove propane ran out) he addressed it immediately. What a bonus to have him around...mahalo!

We'll always remember our time there and hope to be back in the future.

'A hui hou (until we meet again).

Enjoy the beauty and slow pace of Huahine

  • 5 of 5

Staying at the Villas Bougainville was a treat beyond adequate description. Raphael Matapo and his staff could not have been more welcoming, helpful and generous. The villa we were in is charmingly decorated and very, very clean. We could walk right out in the yard and pick coconuts, mangos, lime, papaya and much more. We had plenty of privacy but Raphael and his staff were available if we had a question.

The car and boat really enhanced our stay. We had the freedom to explore the bay and the island and return to places we really liked.

The town of Fare has shops, markets and a super market where we found everything we needed. The people are so friendly. Huahine Nautique offers a wealth of information and activities. We especially enjoyed the picnic boat tour. The owner, Marc, also has a very good restaurant/bar in town where you can sit and watch fishing boats come in.

The best part about the island of Huahine, for us, is that it is not heavily touristed and commercial. It is a lush paradise with beautiful, friendly people. We look forward to going back again soon.

Huahine, the unspoiled island

  • 5 of 5

So glad to see Villas Bougainville on VRBO. This is the greatest bargain !

Huahine is not developed . It is clean as crews clean .

The Villas are spotless. We had fresh lemon and coconut right from the garden.

The market is very inexpensive. Tuna steaks for about $5.00/ pound. Fresh fruits. The grocery store has just about everything and prices are not that bad. Cheese from New Zealand is inexpensive and the meat is good.

Some tips for the boat. There are many rays by the Te Tiare between the dark and light water. We went slowly and finally figured out we were scaring them away so we went more quickly. Then we saw tons of rays.

On the way to town in the boat, we saw many many spinner dolphins.

With the car, we liked the beaches at Relais Mahana and LaPita.

On Friday night, the Snack Temarara in Fare has poisson brochette (fish kabobs) for $2.50 each. Have French fries, cheesy potatoes or rice. Yum!

Happy hour at the Temarara every night but Sunday from 5-6 and at LaPita 5:30-6:30 Thurs, Fri and Sat.

Raphael , the owner, is so nice!

Having a car and a boat increased our opportunities to do what we want , when we want and as long as we wanted to do the activity.

There are many activities to choose from and Raphael has information on what is available.

There is also a visitor's bureau downtown with good information.

Restaurants close around 2:00 PM and do not open until around 6 PM. Temarara ha paninis, however, after 2:00 PM until 6?

The long French bread is 53 cents a loaf.

I am so glad we discovered Huahine and the Villas Bougainville!!!!!
