The “Apple Orchard Riverfront Cottage”

Just a quick block off the Interstate and not too far from Asheville you soon find yourself traveling quietly through an apple orchard on a quaint narrow mountain road which suddenly explodes into a riverfront vista complete with rushing rapids right in the front yard of a truly lovely cottage surrounded by plant pots filled with vegetation and glorious blossoming flowers, weather permitting. You're smiling and haven't even parked the car yet. Off to the right you see the challenge of a bright new shuffleboard court beckoning some good old family competition later, and think what a nice way to bring everyone together. To enhance the experience you find an enormous exterior deck right off the living room that affords a more leisurely opportunity to sit and reflect on this lovely river view while the sounds of rushing waters subtlety background your relaxed conversation with loved ones. As you eventually return inside to a bright, large gathering room filled with endless hardwood floors and luscious warm room colors you enjoy the warmth of a flickering fire in a room filled with family and friends. You’re now in the “Apple Orchard Riverfront Cottage”.

Our little cottage was built in the 1850s and we completely remodeled to make it comfortable and cozy. All systems are brand new. Inside you soon discover three large bedrooms with amazingly comfortable beds and two beautiful spotless bathrooms, all filled with hardwood floors and plenty of windows. Throughout the cottage wonderful eclectic furnishings hand selected by caring, keen eyes continue to intrigue and peak both your interest and curiosity. Your exploration soon finds a wonderfully bright and cheerful, newly-remodeled kitchen well equipped and filled with just about any type of gadgetry required to prepare the tastiest hors d’oeuvres or a gourmet meal for eight. Nothing has been left to wishful thinking. A beautiful kitchen island topped in mountain hardwood beckons you to sit, sip coffee or open a bottle of wine to quietly linger and savior this moment. No kids for a moment, just the two of you.

And as you sit and sip, be it coffee or wine, to ponder the day’s potential; you realize how many wonderful opportunities await you here in the Great Smoky Mountains. You may decide to take a long leisurely walk right here at home along almost a mile of river frontage and ending in the apple orchards or bee hive stands where you might buy apples, peaches and honey. Perhaps you decide a quick drive into Asheville for a leisurely day of exploring the Biltmore or The Grove Park Inn, or all the neat restaurants and shops. For those more inclined to physical activity you might find yourself planning on rafting the rapids or tubing right in front of your cottage or zip lining the tree canopies near Asheville, or all the above. In fall, you may want to hike the mountain trails to view the vivid fall colors, knowing it’s a must see. And later in the year you may plan on the challenge of skiing the slopes of Cataloochee, just minutes away.

Regardless of your choice of so many varied things to do and see, one thing is truly certain: you ultimately will enjoy coming home again and again to the warmth and caring found nestled in your lovely home away from home, the “Apple Orchard Riverfront Cottage”.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a perfect place to relax and enjoy a vacation! We fly-fished, played golf, contributed to the Cherokee Tribe via their casino, visited the Asheville Arboretum, Biltmore Mansion, Grove Park Inn, many restaurants and pubs in the surrounding area.! The weather was perfect and the Southern Hospitality was in full bloom as well as the beautiful trees and flowers.

Thank-you Thad for taking such great care of us and the gift of a tasty bottle of chardonnay. It was thoroughly enjoyed.! Thanks also for providing a " home away from home."

And we shopped in Waynesville, Brevard, Asheville and Black Mountain.!

OH MY GOODNESS! The pictures do not do this place justice! The house is amazing inside! Bedrooms are roomy, comfy, and pretty. Kitchen/pantry well stocked. I was a bit worried when I 'google' mapped it and saw how close it was to town (we like isolated places) but once we turned on the road, we had no more worries! When we were at the "Red Umbrella Cottage" (as we came to call it) it seemed as if we were miles from anyone else! The land is gorgeous and a great place for families with children of all ages. The river isn't so close to the cottage that we had to worry about my 18 month old great-grandson when they came to visit and the yards around the house were so large, he felt as though he was on a great adventure everytime he went out the door! Our two dogs have been depressed since we came home. They go out the back door here and come right back in. At the Cottage they would stay out for hours, but they never wandered off! The neighbors seemed like dear friends by the end of the week. They were helpful but not intrusive. We were told of a place to go see elk, and we did! And what a beautiful drive to get there! We had fun fishing in the beautiful river, we caught many fish of good size but they were so beautiful, we just released them. We were told of a 'trout pond' about an hour away and had a great time there with my grandson and his family and brought some delicious fillets home. We felt so at home at the Cottage and in the area that we really hated to leave. Thad and his wife are a delight and since we don't drink alcohol, they left us apple juice, sausage, and biscuits. You will never regret spending time at the Cottage. Our only complaint was that our time there had to end. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful place with us and our two dogs. We enjoyed our time at the Cottage tremedously!

Great Place!

  • 5 of 5

This place is spacious, attractively decorated, comfortable, and in a beautiful location with a large treed lot and adjacent to an orchard and a creek (actually a river, but at this spot it's more like a large creek). The owner is friendly and has done a great job providing just about everything you could possibly need for an effortless stay. We spent several days each in Asheville and Waynesville (a real gem). Being midway to each made for us conveniently short trips. Highly recommend.

Peaceful and lovely cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We just returned home from a week at the cottage and we are already talking about when we can return for another stay. The location is peaceful and quiet, and conveniently located a short drive between Asheville and Waynesville. It is not far from the highway or grocery store but you would never know it as it feels so far away from the hustle and bustle. Living in Atlanta we are unfortunately used to traffic noise but the only noise we heard here was the relaxing sounds of the river. Waking up every morning to enjoy coffee on the patio with the birds and bunnies, while watching the fog fade was amazing. We enjoyed cooking meals in the fully stocked kitchen and grilling on the patio. The house is spacious and comfortable with every detail considered for comfort and enjoyment. It is completely charming and tastefully decorated. Thad and Marilyn are such thoughtful owners and left us wine and DVD's to enjoy.

We brought our toy poodle and shepard mix with us to the cottage and I think they may have enjoyed it more than we did. They loved racing through the meadow down to the river chasing each other, and lounging in the sun on the patio and deck.

While enjoying the patio one afternoon the neighbor working in the orchard behind the cottage walked over and gave us some of the most delicious peaches from his trees.

I can't say enough good things about this cottage and how wonderful our stay was. We are sad we had to leave and can't wait to come back and stay again.

A very special North Carolina experience

  • 5 of 5

Our week at this house was extraordinary - from the riverfront location, to its historic attributes and its beautiful decor, this was a unique and memorable experience. The house is just lovely in every way, and if you love historic homes in a beautiful setting, it doesn't get any better than this. The location is great for getting to Asheville and numerous hikes and waterfalls along the Blue Ridge Parkway. It was a joy to wake up in the morning and enjoy coffee on the porch or deck with the birds singing and bunny families hoping about; in the evenings we relaxed watching the fireflies and listening to the river. The house is comfortable, well-equipped and beautifully decorated. And the welcoming bottle of wine was greatly appreciated! We stayed in several nights just because it was so relaxing, and the very nice Ingles market nearby has everything we needed to cook a great dinner with local ingredients. Like many other guests, we didn't want to leave this special place. We'll be back again soon!

Beautiful Property, lovely cottage amazaingly peaceful but close to all

  • 4 of 5

My husband rented river's edge for my 40th birthday so we could spend time with our daughter who lives in charlotte. What a beautiful location! Another reviewer said the pictures don't do it justice and they weren't lying! The house was very pretty and extremely well stocked. There wasn't anything wanting. The view is amazing and very relaxing, the proximity to local restaurants and supermarkets is super convenient, literally 'down the mountain' but yet the feel is totally secluded. Asheville is also only 20 min away and has many friendly brewery's with great food. Thad, a true definition of the word host left us a very thoughtful welcome gift!

If you want a peaceful, private getaway to just relax with your family, We would definitely recommended this cottage. Thank you so much Thad!! We look forward to doing it again!

Our vacation home, the 'Apple Orchard Cottage' is ideally located midway between the Waynesville-Maggie Valley area and Asheville, both about 15 minutes away. This cozy, secluded cottage is just off I-40 at Exit 31, giving you immediate and easy access to all areas of the Smoky Mountains. A short easy drive will get you to Asheville, famous for the Biltmore Estate, arts and crafts, dining and shopping; and Cherokee, famous for the Cherokee Indian Reservation and Harrah's Casino. Also, close by are Lake Junaluska, Hendersonville, Brevard, Black Mountain, Bryson City and Balsam. If you golf, there are numerous golf courses in the area:

Waynesville Country Club is just a few minutes away. This Donald Ross designed 27-Hole course has sweeping mountain panoramic views and is filled with challenge. It has a 4-Star rating by Golf Digest.

Laurel Ridge Country Club is also just a few minutes away. This is a wonderful Bob Cupp designed 18-Hole Championship course with clubhouse and other facilities to include tennis.

Lake Junaluska Golf Course is an 18-Hole, 5,034-yard course also nearby and offers a challenging Par 68 opportunity.

Maggie Valley Club is an 18-Hole, 6,500-yard, par 72 course with the flat Valley '9' serving as a 'warm-up' for the Mountain '9' with an 800-foot rise in elevation and an increased challenge.

Springdale Country Club offers an 18-Hole, par 72 course, 6,800 yards from the gradual elevation changes of the front nine toward Rocky Face Mountain, to the wide open fairways on the back nine where Cold Mountain serves as a spacious backdrop.
