About The Owner

I'm retired, and a grand mother . I'm living alone, and my favorite pastime is to take care of my garden.

I have 2 daughters, and 4 little children , and I enjoy visiting them.

Why The Owner chose France

I fell in love with this cottage, and its setting, because it was totally alone , along the river, exposed to the sun from the sunrise to the sunset. So, the first thing I did , was to open large windows to let the light in and the sun to get in through.

It is no to far from all amenities, and it is easy to the beaches, or to Caen.

What makes this cottage unique

I like loneliness, and after a stay near by my daughters , or after a travel, it's a real pleasure to come back home , and enjoy the calm and the beauty of the setting.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for 2 weeks in paradise.

Dog's paradise

  • 5 of 5

We took our 3 dogs from Hong Kong all the way to Normandy to experience this pocket of paradise. Upon entering the home, it really felt like a home, unlike many other impersonal properties. It has a large and comfortable master bedroom with great views, a room with double bed and another double bedroom with en suite facing the meticulous garden. Every single window, and I mean all of them are like paintings, with views of the trees and the river. The showers was hot with good pressure. Internet speed was good as well - do note that there is no mobile signal but with technology now adays, you can always use VOIP (facetime or Skype).

Claudine greeted us when we arrived and showed us around her property. In the kitchen, we had everything you would ever need. A week's supply of nespresso coffee pods, a nice bottle of wine, butter, fruits, garlic, onion, milk....literally everything and all the condiments and other things you'd expect in the kitchen. When her friend came to pick her up, he even brought over bread, ham and salads.

There are trails all around the house - you have no neighbours and its a tranquil place to rest up and enjoy the surroundings. a 5 min walk up the trail, there's a newly built trail along a disuse train track which, i believe reaches all the way to Caen (we didn't try). On a bike, I can imagine lovely rides up and down with no traffic. Then, there's the Grimbosq forest, with ancient Normande period village mounds and old chapels. Simply amazing! Though we didn't

visit too many D-Day sites, you are really only a 30-40mins drive from the D Day beaches and all the museums.

The booking process with Claudine was flawless, efficient and simple. She also provided great information for us to do things with the dogs, such as area pet shops, beaches and walks.....we'd love to come back and already miss it!

What a great vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in this beautiful Villa, last Sep. The house and the surroundings are full of beauty and comfort. The rooms are decorated with such a good taste that you don't want to leave the house. The problem is that the surroundings are tempting as well. The house is fully equiped with everything you need and more. Nothing is missing and everything is with such a good taste and plenty.

We used the house as a starting point to travel to most of the attractions between Mont Saint Michel and Honfleur and we were happy to return each evening to this comfortable home away from home.

The recreation equipment: Kayaks, bikes, etc. were all in very good shape and we used them in the river and around.

We even got some useful tips on where and how to look for fossils.

My wife and I together with our children would like to recommend this Villa for all of you who are looking for a great place to spend an unforgettable vacation.

If we come again to Normandy we will not look for any other place to be. It is simply the best!

Thank you Claudine

Kind Regards,

Private sanctuary nestled in a valley

  • 5 of 5

We have had many, many VRBO rentals over the years (in locations ranging from Napa to Paris), but this one tops the list - and there are no close seconds. The moment I saw the photos, I knew it was perfect for two tired US-based research/teaching professors who needed to get away for some recovery time at the end of a long academic year. We spent 8 days in this wonderful sanctuary (including several days when we never left the house)...and will be eternally grateful to Claire, a truly gracious host who did everything possible to make our stay nothing less than perfect. The home, which was beautifully restored after damage during WWII, sits on a small river in a valley nestled in a park. Open the windows and you can hear the river flow and birds (tons of birds) singing 24/7. The home is well stocked with anything you could possibly need...we did most of the cooking at home, in the newly renovated kitchen, and enjoyed our evenings reading in the living room, which has a beautiful fireplace and large, open windows to view the scenic surroundings. Because Claire left to visit family after we arrived, her best friend Anne-Marie (who lives in Maizet), an outgoing and warm communications/journalist who lived in the States for a few years while earning her Masters at Columbia University, was our go-to person for any questions, concerns, etc. We appreciate her helping us to refine our rusty French language skills and her exquisite cooking expertise! All in all, it was the best vacation we have had and this was due in no small part to the hospitality of both Claire and Anne-Marie.

A few words of advice to anyone visiting this area: Be sure to have a GPS, it will help you locate anything and everything (including this sequestered home). It's a short jaunt (<1 hr) to pretty much anywhere you'd want to go along the northern beaches, eg Mont Saint Michel, Bayeaux, Normandy DDay beaches, etc. One attraction that we likely would have missed but thankfully did not is the Pegasus Bridge and museum in nearby Caen - highly recommended for anyone interested in the WWII aspects of this beautiful region of France.

Merci, merci Claire and Anne-Marie -- we will be back!

Pictures and descriptions do not do this wonderful place justice. It is paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a amazing stay in Normandy and the World Equestrian Games (WEGs). The horse show was spectacular but without a doubt the highlight was coming home each afternoon to this little piece of paradise. From the first afternoon we felt so at home and just astounded at our good luck in finding this treasure of a place. Sitting out on the patio in the comfortable garden furniture, revisiting our day over a glass of wine with the smells of flowers, freshly mown lawn and the herb garden wafting around us was bliss. The kitchen was a cooks dream, fully equipped with quality cookware and every type of serving dish you could ever want. Lying in bed at night and hearing the river gently running by and the owls hooting was heaven. Claudine was amazing. Instantly helpful and available and a wealth of information. Thank you so very much for a vacation we will always remember and I know we will be back.

Better than perfect

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Claire's cottage with my family for the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings. If we ever come back to Normandy, I wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else. The setting is absolutely stunning, right on the Orne river with an enormous lawn. The house is completely modern with wifi, all the necessary appliances, and very spacious bedrooms. The pictures are beautiful but they still don't do the property justice. The location is definitely rural but is ideal for a full week in Normandy. It is located centrally enough within Lower Normandy that it allows for easy access to Caen, Bayeux, the D-Day beaches, as well as Mont St. Michel and the Pays d'Auge. An unexpected bonus was that it's only a 5-minute walk from La Voie Verte, a beautiful new biking/running path that goes from Caen through the Suisse Normande. Best of all, the owner Claudine (she goes by Claire) was incredibly kind and welcoming. She made sure we had everything we needed and treated us like family. I highly recommend visiting Normandy and staying in this property if you do.

Beautiful home, beautiful setting, gracious and generous host!

  • 5 of 5

Claire was there to meet us when we drove up to the house on the afternoon of May 31. She was as gracious and as friendly as the house was beautiful and accommodating. As beautiful as the pictures are, they do not do the venue sufficient justice. There is every amenity imaginable; Internet, espresso maker, washer dryer, TV, etc. The house is situated just south of Caen and the setting is absolutely stunning. The Orne River is literally in the back yard. The cities of Rouen, Bayeux, Le Mont St. Michel, as well as the historical sites of the Normandy invasion are no more than 90 minutes away. The house is as comfortable as it is beautiful. My family of four spent a week there in order to be part of the 70th Anniversary Commemoration of the Invasion of Normandy. I would stay in this house again in a heartbeat.
