About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Aloha and Welcome to Nanea Kai. We are very proud to share our 1,800 sqr. ft. island style home with you. As you drive past your wooden sun carved gates, you will enter into your own private sanctuary. Our family living room is made up of Hawaii's prized Koa wood. Many windows let the cool breeze through as well as EACH room has its own ceiling fan. Our large kitchen is a great gathering spot and has a granite counter island that everyone can gather around. As you walk out onto the wrap around entertainment deck, you will look into the 1,500 sqr. ft. thermal heated swimming pond. Our pond ranges from 2ft.- 10 f. at the deepest spot. This pond is fed from under ground springs from the ocean so it rises and falls with the tide. This is also a great filtering system that keeps the water very clean and clear and with a temperature that is normally in the 80's. This makes snorkeling in the pond a pleasure. We do supply some snorkeling equipment as well as a hot/cold out side shower. If you take a right outside our drive way, you will see a tunnel of trees which leads to tide pools as well as the breathtaking view of the ocean. Walk another 6 minutes and your will be at the Wai' Ope Fish Reserve. See so many colorful fish as well as the different colored corals. This is Not a place you will find packed with people. A 5 minute drive will take you to Ahalanui warm springs park . Pahoa is a 15 minute drive with quaint restaurants and to do your marketing. Hilo Town is 30 minutes away where you can visit the farmers market with all its exotic fruits for sale as well as souvenirs, surf shops, restaurants, diving rentals , ect.. Across the street is a black sand beach were you can watch the canoe teams practice or walk and look for beach glass. Then theres the Volcano National Park you want to visit. Walk through lava tubes and see the steam vents. The Volcano Golf course is right above the park as well as the Volcano Winery. If its night time lava cascading down the volcano you want to see, thats about a 20 minute drive from our home. Viewing is free and it opens to the public at 5 p.m. Bring a jacket, flashlight (theres some at the house) and water. Park rangers are there to make sure everyone is safe. My favorite thing to do is just lay by the pond , feed the fish and enjoy the sound of the ocean. Hope you'll visit us soon.

Why kim rodrigues chose Kapoho

My husband and I always rented a home in Kopoho to get away. We love it so much we decided to buy one. Its like stepping back in time.

Beautiful home in a great area. Nice to sit on the deck or lawn chairs and watch the fish!

  • 5 of 5

My daughter learned to swim in the pond! Float toys and water shoes provided. Walking distance to the beach. Close to Hilo for tourist group activities. Very clean. Spacious kitchen had all needed stuff (pots, pans, silverware, dinnerware, Tupperware, etc). BBQ with propane provided. Lots of towels and no hot water issues.

I was surprised there were crabs living on the pond walls but they were fun to watch and didn't bother swimmers. No air conditioning made it a little warm in the house after going out and leaving the windows closed all day.

The owner was very easy to get a hold of for issues (needed to call to figure out house alarm).

Owner's Response: Thank you for such kind words. 25 yrs ago our daughter learned how to swim in a pond in Kapoho as well. The memory of her face looking up at me from under the water is still fresh in my mind. May the memories always make you smile. A hui ho, Kim

Gorgeous, peaceful, comfy retreat

  • 4 of 5

The photos do not do this place justice! We had two adults and four children, and it was a great place to just hang out as a family. Kim was prompt and available when I had questions or brought up any issues. A few notes that might inform any potential renters: it's about a 30-minute drive from Hilo. The driveway is very steep and kind of narrow for today's extra wide minivans, if you are renting a van. The pond is shared with the neighboring property (and those folks live there year long and are a family with kids), and is separated by a fence and a wall, but with an underwater grate (can't really see that side in pics, I think), so although there is privacy, all in all, it's not completely secluded--don't run around naked or behave inappropriately outside, because the family can see you. Tons of swimming stuff under the house. The tidepools are absolutely beautiful, and truly only a 5-10 minute walk away. We went during one of the hottest times of the year (end of July), so even with the fans on and windows open, the house never really cooled down--which just meant that we spent more time in the pond. But the cupola bedroom, though pretty, was too hot to sleep in. There's a satellite TV set up, but we could never find anything good and only marginally figured out how to use it (there's instructions provided, but I am not that tech savvy)--ended up getting Red Box movies from Safeway in Hilo. My only suggestions to them would be that their next TV is one of those that connects to Netflix and Hulu, so people can put in their own accounts, and they can get rid of the satellite setup; also, that there was some type of shade by the pond, for the early afternoon when it's too hot to be indoors and too sunny to stay in direct sunlight for hours. All in all, we really enjoyed the area, the property, the vacation, and our communications with our host, and I have recommended the place to everyone! Might be tough to get a spot next time...

Great property

  • 5 of 5

My adult daughter and two grandchildren (11 and 12) and I stayed at this property and had a wonderful time. The house exceeded my expectations. Truly lovely and spacious. The kids loved having the pond to come back to everyday and the outside shower was a hit. It was a bit warm in July, but was expected. Was always a nice breeze here as compared to Kona. So, with all the doors and windows open and the many fans on, it was fine. My grandson loved the upstairs bedroom with the spiral staircase. Had his own space away from the 3 girls. Very clean. Two of us aren't prone to bug bites, so were fine, but the other two needed sprayed when out by the pond in the evening. Was in a great location to explore that end of the island for 4 days. Mahalo, for a lovely stay.

Great home for a large family, very relaxing :0)

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed several days at this home at the end of June this year. We brought groceries and snorkle gear and enjoyed the quiet neighborhood and short walk to the tide pools. The home was very nice and had all the comforts for "stay put" vacation spot. Our kids loved the backyard tide pool and couch area. I loved walking to the tide pool and knowing about the "secret" path that was not marked but mapped out in the info book at the home. Make sure to bring reash gaurds and snorkle gear, fins help if you want to go farther out to the waves. Thankful for use of the washer/dryer too, it was nice to wash things before packing up :0)
