About John Kleive
Retired Vocational teacher / Welder / Welding Inspector / Peace Corps Volunteer / disabled veteran. The property (40 acres) was bought in '88 and the road (1 1/2 miles) was put in the following year. Two years later my boys and I had the cabin basically completed and its been my home ever since.
John Kleive purchased this Cabin in 1988
Why John Kleive chose Fall Lake
With 6 children in our family, we found the BWCAW to be a terrific family vacation area that we could afford. I couldn't imagine a better area to retire to than a cabin on a lake in the Ely area.
What makes this Cabin unique
I think I enjoy the solitude, privacy and beauty of my small part of the lake most of all. It's a great place to relax, enjoy nature and simply enjoy and appreciate being alive.

Well-appointed private lake-front cabin
My husband and I booked this cabin after our daughter's wedding, needing a little R &R for ourselves. It was a beautiful piece of heaven! The owner, John, went out of his way to greet us beforehand and show use around. The cabin was very private, accommodating and well-stocked. My husband saw a bear in the morning through the window out by the deck. The Northern Lights were spectacular. The fishing was the best we ever had and the neighboring lakes were accessible via Garden Lake. I brought in a large Walleye- a lifetime catch! My husband, a large Northern. The owner offered to have them mounted and displayed in his cabin. So very touching but because this was our first big catch and the weekend was so beautiful, we decided to have them mounted and keep them at our home as a memory. The fish were so big that we could not find a cooler big enough to keep them on ice. It turns out the owner texted us, realizing our dilemma and offered for us to borrow his ginormous cooler. I cannot get over his hospitality and really have no desire to stay anywhere else again but his cabin. Nothing can come close to what we experienced here and we frequent Ely and Grand Marias quite often.
Trail's End vacation
We had a wonderful two weeks at Trails End on Garden Lake. Lots of boating, swimming and fun at this very private and secluded cabin! Owner John was very attentive to any needs and the cabin was clean and well equipped.
Awesome family summer lake vacation!
Like other reviews have said it was a great property , great amenities , and John was great to work with. Took my two kids ages 4 and 7 and we all had a vacation we'll remember forever. Lots to see and do around the Ely area as well.
Thanks much Barret for the five stars. It was a pleasure to meet you and your family and I hope you'll consider Trails End again in the future. Thanks again........................john
Trail’s Edge was the ideal place to vacation in the beautiful, serene North Woods. Sitting on a secluded spot on quiet Garden Lake, it was just a short drive to Ely for groceries, window shopping, dining at a unique restaurant, or enjoying a treat of ice cream or coffee. So many lakes and trails, too - perfect for outdoor enthusiasts!
We loved relaxing in the P&Q of the cabin, paddling/fishing on the lake, leaving behind all the busyness of life. We rented the owner’s boat (take your own trolling motor/battery), and I took my kayak. We were pleasantly surprised by the lack of traffic on the lake. Most of the time it was only us and the occasional loon, bald eagle, beaver, or deer on/near the water. We also enjoyed swimming to/lazing on the floating dock (bring your own beach towels and floaties).
The cabin was perfect for our family of five. Tucked back down a long gravel road, with the closest neighbor being across the bay, it was exactly the amount of seclusion we wanted. We were very comfortable and pleased with just about everything. It was clean with no signs of mice/insect problems. Our mattresses/bedding were quite comfortable. The water quality was fantastic and accommodated all of us…no running out of hot water, no rust, excellent water pressure. We didn’t get to use the wood burning stove, but there was lots of wood for it (and for the fire pit), and we did take advantage of the AC. There were plenty of linens, bath towels, kitchen textiles to get us thru the week, and the kitchen was well equipped with just about everything we needed to prepare/eat meals (bring things like aluminum foil, parchment paper, Ziploc baggies, tissues). There was plenty of room to spread out at the dining room table to eat or play games, lounge and read on one of the comfy futon sofas in the living area, sit and sip coffee on the big wraparound deck. The kids befriended a chipmunk who would gladly take nuts and grapes right out of their hands. We even had a black bear lumber through the yard one evening!
John was such a gracious host, communicating well with us and meeting with us at the cabin upon our arrival to show us the ropes of the place. He told us it was our home for the week and that he was just a phone call away if we needed anything, which was a comfort. We were sad that we had to leave this wonderful place and area. It was such a rejuvenating and restorative week for us, and we hope to return!
Thanks much for a great review. I'm glad your vacation went well. Give my best to all and hope you'll consider Trails End again in the future. Take care....................john
Great Rental, you will NOT be disappointed
My wife, 2 children (8 and 6) and I spent a wonderful fun filled week at Trail's End. The cabin was very clean and perfectly situated in a private cove of Garden Lake. The cabin has every amenity you could want for an enjoyable lake vacation. There are limitless opportunities to enjoy the surrounding wilderness and the Boundary Waters are accesible by boat or if you want to use the guide services available in Ely. I used the fishing boat each morning and caught many Walleye and Northern Pike the largest of which was caught in the cove by the cabin. We found Ely to be a great place to have dinners after a day of fun and sun as the restaurants were excellent. The owner, John, is obviously a very quality person and he went out of his way to make sure we had everything we may have needed for an unforgettable stay at his fantastic property.
Trails End is a wonderful cabin tucked away in a beautiful wooded area on a peaceful lake. Our host, John couldn't have been more welcoming and accommodating. Hiking, canoeing, and scenic drives filled our days while sipping wine and reading a good book made for a wonderful evening. The Boathouse Friday Fish Fry was delicious. The perfect getaway :) !
