About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-6)

This log cabin is on the edge of Lake Kathlyn in the beautiful Bulkley Valley near Smithers; the town of four seasons. Smithers offers all amenities and outdoor winter and summer sports.

Our three bedroom cabin offers two Queen rooms and a small room with two single beds. The house accommodates up to 6 people. There is also a heated room outside the kitchen for use as a drying room in the winter. All windows are double glazed. Lake Kathlyn freezes in the winter for all forms of XC skiing and skating and in the summer months has abundant wildlife hummingbirds, Canada geese and loons. The cabin is 4km from Smithers and 1km from the airport. The lake is a sanctuary and no motorised boats are permitted. The downhill skiing and XC ski club are open for five months of the year. Highlights in the valley include the steelhead fishing season, hunting and hiking.

About David Whish

I grew up in Australia which does not have such spectacular mountains. Having worked in Canada in the 1980's I always wanted a classic Canadian log cabin on a lake with a view.

David Whish purchased this house in 2004

Why David Whish chose Northern British Columbia

Smithers is in the Bulkley Valley which can be breathtakingly beautiful in all seasons. You do not see all the seasons in the tropics where I live. The cabin has been meticulously finished by the best local builder.

What makes this house unique

I have many friends in Smithers. I enjoy the skiing, hiking, wildlife and wilderness. A cross country ski around the lake is a great workout. Many types of humming birds appear in the Summer.

Our second girls trip and we enjoyed ourselves again!

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is beautiful, right on the water and just a short distance from Smithers. The view is incredible! The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because the water had a very strong sulphur odour that we couldn't seem to get rid of. Other than that it was fantastic!!!!

Owner's Response: Thanks Joan As we take the water from the lake and filter it for all household usage except drinking we have been chasing the cause. We have changed all filters in the house and are now looking at the well in the front yard and the well man says he will be able to fix it. Thanks for the review Annie

Winter retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time in the cabin, snug inside by the fire with the wonderful view, into town and up the mountain for a ski (without queues). Fabulous!

A great "coming home" for us fishermen after a long day of fishing in the Bulkley Valley. No complaint about anything. We would like to come back!

Amazing vacation

  • 5 of 5

Honestly!!!! We loved it. My husband and I went to visit our son and girlfriend for a week,to spend quality time together. He lives in Smithers and to make it a vacation for all, we stayed at your place. It was certainly a home away from home! With so much more. Staying on the lake was beautiful and serine, looking over to the mountains, listening to the loons, my personal favorite. We were givin a small row boat to use for the lake and it was real nice to go out around the lake.

The cottage was Very Comfortabe and homey. We loved the open concept atmosphere to be together, when cooking and relaxing. Everything that we needed was there and even more than we expected. Flying in from Ontario, it's not like you can take a lot with you and you certainly don't want to go shopping for everything for a week right away. It was so nice to have all the staples there (TP, paper towels, dish and hand soap, garbage bags). Then replace as needed. Not to mention the coffee and spices. Thank you! Everything was very clean and ready to use, just like home!,, it was even very nice that all dish towels and clothes were there, and an extras for everything!, really nice. Towels , bedding, everything was there!

We were very close to town, for the trips in for staples. Not far from some of the site seeing we did, easy to get and back forth.

I would love to come back and visit with our son and girlfriend with my whole family. They would all love it!

I do have to say, we did not have the greatest of weather, rain, rain, rain. But you can't predict that and you still prepare for It, and make the best of it, like we did!

I hope to make happy memories there again.
