A Northern JEM not to be Missed!!

Bedrooms 1
Space 1,250 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 0 - 3 nights

About the property

1 bedroom + 2nd story loft (sleeps 7-9), 3/4 bath + electric for a 5th wheel.

Nestled in the woods along beautiful Trout Lake, the Northern JEM is truly a place to relax and unwind. It offers something for everyone -- abundant fishing (right off the dock - great for kids!), a great lake for water skiing and tubing, and lots of wildlife. You can watch bald eagles fish and feed their young in the pine tree next to the dock! Start or end your day with incredible sunrises and sunsets over pristine waters.... what more could you ask for?!

Trout Lake is a moderate sized lake (approx. 1900 acres with 13.5 miles of shoreline) and if you enjoy fishing, it is a good place to wet your line. The lake was stocked for many years with walleye and also offers northern pike, rock bass, sunfish, perch, and blue gills. The lake's topography provides for excellent fishing with a maximum depth of approx. 135 feet - lots of shelves and rolling terrain make the challenge of landing a trophy fish all the more fun! Water clarity and quality is very good.

Trout Lake is also a water skier's dream! The lake is 4.5 miles long, so you can ski and tube for hours without being interrupted by other boats and jet skis. The lake is not heavily populated so you will not encounter much boat traffic, other than those trolling along a shelf line hoping too to land a big one!

The lake has two public boat launches and beaches -- one on the north end off of Hwy 169 and the other is located immediately across the lake from our dock. Your rental includes the use of a canoe, 2 kayaks, life jackets, and paddles. You are welcome to tie your motor boat to the dock. There also is power available by the dock for live wells.

If fishing and swimming aren't your thing, you can spend hours reading in solitude or observing lots of wildlife, including eagles, hawks, osprey, a family of deer, hummingbirds, pileated woodpeckers, loons, an occasional raccoon or beaver, as well as the always curious chipmunks.

The Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway begins in Grand Rapids and ends 47 miles north in Effie. Travel this spectacular, winding byway by many pristine lakes, forests, swamps, rolling hills, and other unique features.

Outdoor recreation, including miles of marked hiking trails, and interpretive sites are waiting to be explored. During fall, the north woods is adorned with the brilliant colors of red sugar maples, bronze oak trees and glowing gold aspen and birch. Little outposts and antique shops exist along the way. The Chippewa National Forest and the Suomi Trails offer miles of paved trails for hiking, biking and rollerblading.

Learn about Judy Garland, born Frances Ethel Gumm, at her birthplace and childhood home in Grand Rapids, including a very interesting exhibit at the Itasca County Museum. Step into pages from the past and discover the history of the logging era at the Minnesota Forest History Center. Here you can climb a 100' fire tower and see for miles! The Children's Discovery Museum offers great entertainment for younger children. You can also take tours of the Blandin Paper Mill (located on the Mississippi River) and the Hill Annex Mine & State Park. Hibbing, Minnesota, hometown of music legend Bob Dylan, is less than a 1/2 hour drive away and there you can visit the Bob Dylan Collection, found in the Hibbing Library.

If golf is your game, several well-maintained 18-hole golf courses provide championship play -- Eagle Ridge, Pokegama & Sugarbrooke. Four 9-hole courses are also in the area. Grand Rapids is home to the annual Grand Slam Amateur Golf Tournament, held each year on the 3rd weekend of August.

Several day trips can also be planned. The Mississippi River Headwaters are about a 90 minute drive to the west and Duluth and the North Shore are just over an hour to the south and east. The edge of the Mesabi Iron Range and the north woods has a lot to offer. Come and stay for a while -- you won't want to go home!

Amazing fall getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Northern JEM this past weekend. We spent a whole day out on Trout Lake in the canoe available near the dock. Stunning view of the fall colors and fairly good fishing as well! The cabin itself was incredibly cozy and perfect for couples or families.

Cozy, scenic and comfortable.

  • 4 of 5

The northern jem was everything advertised. It was ideal for two adults. The lake was easily accessible. The water had an odd odor but seemed fine otherwise. Beautiful lake and landscape. Very private and quaint. Overall, a great experience.

Quaint cottage nestled in the woods!!!

  • 4 of 5

We thought it was fabulous!! Beautiful scenery and very comfortable!! Was great place to stay near Grand Rapids to enjoy the peace and quiet instead of being confined to a motel room!!! The lake is beautiful and looked clean!! My grand kids enjoyed hiking around the yard and going down the steps to sit by the lake!! Will have to make more trips up soon!!!

great spot on the hill

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cabin on a little hill above Trout Lake. Has a path down to the water where there is a nice platform for lounging. The dock is next to it where the boat is parked and there is a separate, what appears to be groomed, entrance from which you can scramble down to the water to get in a man-powered water craft. Being able to borrow the canoe/kayaks was a real treat and the lake was surprisingly quiet. The two fire-pit options (one by the house on the hill and the other down by the water) and plentiful firewood was also an added bonus.

Peaceful and quiet

  • 4 of 5

Although the weather did not cooperate with us, we still enjoyed our time at Northern Gem. The property was beautiful and quiet. We did see a bald eagle in one of the pine trees and at one point, counted 11 young bald eagles circling above us - pretty cool to see! The cabin itself is amazing and my children loved sleeping in the loft. We tried to spend as much time outside as possible but when it was raining, there was plenty for us to do inside.

Based on previous reviews, we were aware of the amount of stairs involved in getting down to the lake. We counted over 66 of them but there are some landings in between so you can take breaks, I can see this being difficult for some people though. We packed a bag and cooler and spent a day down at the lake to avoid trekking up and down the stairs - our kids loved it.

I would say that the only thing we were kind of disappointed in was the dock. Where it currently is, it is extremely weedy and full of green algae. From the pictures, we weren't expecting that. You can still get into the water to swim/canoe/kayak/fish on the other side of the point on the property so it wasn't the end of the word, but kind of a bummer.

Overall we really enjoyed our time at the Northern Gem - thank you!

A beautiful up north getaway place!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 (3 young boys) stayed at The Northern Jem this past week and we had an incredible time. Some of the negatives from the other reviews were the shower size and the amount of stairs down to the lake. For us neither of those were negatives. It was nice with 3 little kids to be separated from the lake by an obstacle (kept them up with us when we were at the fire or grilling) and the stairs were not impossible especially if you thought of it as free fitness:) The cabin itself is very cute and set up wonderfully for sleeping and hanging out although we didn't spend too much time in it because we were kayaking and canoeing (provided) on beautiful Trout Lake. There is a firm bottom swim area in front and the water is crystal clear. The cabin was stocked with everything we needed (bring your own food/towels/and condiments). It is less than a 10 minute drive into Grand Rapids or Coleriane. We loved our stay and will be back! Thanks Nick for being so great to work with!
