Discover Jamestown by visiting The Fenton (1863 Victorian Italian Villa Style Brick Mansion) History Museum and Research Library - home of New York State Governor Reuben Eaton Fenton1865-1868, known as "the soldiers friend" for his support of the Civil War soldier. As a founder of the Republican Party AKA anti-slave party, he ran on the same ticket with Abraham Lincoln. Museum houses MANY exhibits featuring the Victorian age, early settler age, business and industry, and of course Lake Chautauqua, as well as changing exhibits.

The Roger Tory Peterson Institute houses original artwork and various exhibits featuring Peterson's devotion to wildlife, especially birds. Great walking trails!

The Robert H. Jackson Center, focuses on the life of former Chief Justice of the United States, who stepped down from his post to lead the prosecution team at the Nuremberg Trials. Hosts many guest speakers from the political world as well.

The Lucille Ball - Desi Arnaz Center, a tribute to Jamestown's own First Lady of comedy, houses the Lucy-Desi Museum and Lucy/Desi Playhouse which features the sets from the "I Love Lucy" New York apartment, Hollywood hotel Room, and many other exhibits including a great gift shop!

Soon to open, The National Comedy Center.

Take a short ride to Westfield on Lake Erie and Visit the McClurg Museum, which houses the county historical society and many exhibits about Chautauqua County's rich history. Walk across the street for a photo op with the statues of Abraham Lincoln and Grace Bedell, commemorating his stop in Westfield to personally thank little Grace for her letter suggesting he grow whiskers, as she thought it would help get him elected. It worked!

Another short drive will take you to Holiday Valley or Peak and Peak ski resorts which offer not only great skiing, but tubing and ski lessons too!

Splash Lagoon (Erie's Indoor waterpark), Seneca Allegeny Casino, Presque Isle Downs & Gaming, wineries and golf courses are just minutes away. Walk out your door and on to your snowmobile to ride the many trails or right on the frozen lake (watch out for ice fisherman!).

My wife and I had a wonderful stay. very convenient for us to have a boat dock. The home was clean and comfortable. The view to the lake was wonderful. did some fishing and caught a 5lb LM right off the dock. The home is off the beaten path, so there is little to no traffic noise. very enjoyable.

Wonderful week.

  • 5 of 5

Cottage is on the water, clean, neat and attractive with all essentials except linens. We thoroughly enjoyed the lake celebration of the 4th of July. The birds were super fun to watch and photograph. I was able to fish to my heart's content. Even the rain and fog of one day was fascinating. The neighbors are very nice and friendly. The area is peaceful and quiet. The owner very helpful and pleasant. We enjoyed the Redline Diner (great hot dogs and very reminiscent of the 50s) and Andriaccios ( great antipasto salad and pizza!). A wonderful place to recharge one's soul! Hope we can go back next year.

I have been coming to the lake since I was young. Stayed in many different rentals and hotels. This has been by far the besbest place available, and I won't look any further for other options. Location is perfect. Private lane that leads to great little group of cottages with great neighbors. House is ON the water. launched my boat right up the road and used the dock available all weekend with zero issues. The cottage is great. Nice family room and sun porch overlooking the water. Central air. Fully equipped kitchen and gas grill. Clean bedroom and bath. Even had direct TV. Overall the experience with the cottage and ownership couldn't go any better. Best house on the water for the price. Not to mention we caught the most fish right near the cottage.

About Sara

I was born and raised in the city of Jamestown, and spent a great deal of time on Lake Chautauqua. I am employed by our local history museum as Education Director. My husband and I spent many weekends with our family on the lake. Before that, many weekends with my parents and siblings (my dad loved to fish). He loved this spot, especially the fishing in our bay. With this said, I am extremely familiar with Lake Chautauqua, and enjoyed boating and vacationing at our cottage with our children Mike and Lauren, as well as with our family and friends.

Sara purchased this cottage in 1987

Why Sara chose Mayville

My husband and I were married 30 years until his passing. Our children Michael and Lauren are grown up and have moved away. We bought our cottage in 1987 and our family and friends have enjoyed it ever since. We both grew up in Jamestown NY, located on the outlet of the lake. Our parents pastime coincidentally was boating on Chautauqua lake. Of course we never new each other back then. After we met and married we would take Sunday drives around the lake while exploring every dead end and private drive wishing for a place on the lake. In March of 1987 my husband read an add in local classified newspaper listed by the second owner (built in 1949). We drove to the cottage, met with the owner, fell in love with the cottage, made a deal and the rest is history.

What makes this cottage unique

Location, Location, Location! How many times have you heard that? It's so true... Surrounded on three sides by a nature preserve with plenty of outside area, was one of the top reasons we fell in love with our cottage. Being one of the few cottages left on the lake that hasn't been torn down and replaced with modern lake mansions or added on to in every direction...its still in its original condition. I did however, put a foundation underneath which raised the cottage up a few feet, and replaced the porch in 2016. The kitchen, bath, flooring and heat and air system are newer, yet the place has its old cottage charm with all modern amenities. Still has original tongue and groove knotty pine planks on interior walls with original hardwood flooring through out the bedrooms. You can't help but love the way they built the large window group facing the lake. Exterior is painted clapboard along with a brand new large screened enclosed porch with stunning view of the lake and close to all the action in the upper deeper part of the lake.
