Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)
This charmingly, restored holiday cottage is located in the San Pietro section of the island next to San Pietro church. It is centrally located midway between the beaches, the Neolithic Village in Drautto and the numerous shops and restaurants leading to the main port in the opposite direction. It is nestled in tranquility below the main street, away from the busy foot traffic. A lengthier walk past San Pietro, towards town, brings you to the wooded area of Ditella and finally to Calcara where one's effort is rewarded with an isolated, unspoiled beach perfect for packing a day’s picnic and exploring the more remote side of the island, a once prehistoric sacrificial place to the Gods of the Underworld.
The cottage consists of two bedrooms (each room includes an additional sofabed), each with a large, insuite bathroom, air-conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen and a spacious terrace for open air dining with great sea view and a stunning panorama of the smaller islands of Dattilo, Panarelli, Lisca Bianca, Bottaro, Lisca Nera and le Formiche. It is beautifully furnished and decorated with original hand painted tiles. The century old, high logged ceilings offer a unique appeal. The property is about 50 meters above sea level and 1/2 kilometer from the port. Boat rentals and scuba equipment can be rented at port; lounge chairs and umbrella rentals are available at the main beach (Sotto Castello) in Drautto.
The highest point of Panarea is 'Punto Corvo' (421m.) which can be climbed along a well marked trail, beginning at the south end of the island (Milazzese) and ending at the north end (Calcara). There are other trails which will lead you into the mountain that forms the background of Panarea.
The crystalline waters surrounding Panarea and it's smaller islands allow for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing and fishing.
For the history lover, Panarea is the oldest island of the Aeolian archipelago and a great source of volcanic stratification. A short hike from 'sotto castello' beach will take you to a natural promontory with the remains of a Neolithic Age, Prehistoric Village. The artifacts from the Village are exhibited in the Archeological Museum on Lipari.
Although most beaches on Panarea are rocky (Calcara), the largest (Sotto Castello), is naturally sandy and others (Caletta, under Hotel la Piazza) and (Caletta Zimmeri) are seasonally sandy.
The island has one main road shared by pedestrians and transport by golf cart vehicles. At night, the absence of street lighting allows a breath-taking view of the stars. On moonlit nights, the island is awash in magical lighting illuminating the whitewashed walls of the typical Aeolian style homes and the fragrance of flowers and fauna. The hewn, century old trails leading up the rugged mountainside provide views of the island and its surrounding sister islands. You can explore its wild beauty by carefully following the moutaintop trail from one end of the island to the other (proper shoe attire and drinking water a must). Spring and autumn offer an array of wild flowers and fresh fruit/produce. Summer brings the heat of the Mediterranean and revitalizing sparkling seas. August sees more in the way of tourism and late night life. Beach wear by day and lightweight, casual chic, in the evening is the only attire needed.
A three night minimum stay is required.

I love it
Thank you. You and your family were a pleasure. Hope we see you soon.
It's everything we expected. Centrally located, spectacular view, and the accommodations were perfect. We'll definitely come again!
We had a wonderful week at the house this past summer. It was very clean, quiet, great location with quick walk to village with a lovely view of the Mediterranean. The caretaker was very helpful when needed and the owners are only an email away, with very quick answers to questions. Thank you, Grace for sharing your island home with us! We definitely will be back!
A Vacation Place to Remember
There were a number of places to rent on Panarea, but wow your home was by far the best for us to have selected. We were two young couples who were interested in some night life, sampling Aeolian cuisine, and exploring the island itself. Your home allowed us to do everything we wanted in the comfort of Casa Nonno Picuozzu. It was mid-way between the nightly Port excitement and the daytime adventure to the Pre-historic Village, and yes, on the way we took a dip at the sandy beach. We climbed to Punto Corvo, the highest point on the island and the view was breathtaking. The description of your home was "an original Panarea home", but had all the modern day amenities. The very high logged ceilings in each of two spacious bedrooms, ultra modern bathrooms, a beautiful well appointed kitchen, a terrace area with clear view of the sea, air conditioning, and clothes washer at our disposal provided all the comforts of home. Thank you for giving us a dream vacation.
My last trip to Panarea was in 1993. I was looking forward to rediscovering the island. My expectations were exceeded thanks to our stay at Casa Nonno Picuozzo. Located an easy and scenic 10 minutes walking distance from the port, we had a beautiful view from the house of Dattilo, Basiluzzo and Stromboli. We were far enough from the commotion of the port but close enough for grocery shopping and access to the boat we rented. Framed by a luscious cascade of honeysuckle, bouganvilla, plumbago and lemon trees the terrace was a wonderful place to eat our meals or have an aperitif. The house was clean and comfortable. The added benefit of air conditioning in the bedrooms with overhead fans was great. The kitchen was well-equipped with plenty of plates, glasses, flatware, pots and pans. It was quiet, romantic and a dream come true. Thank you Casa Nonno Picuozzo!
Dream come true
I don't even know where to start. We were beyond pleased with this villa in Panarea. It was perfectly maintained and decorated to give us a perfect Panarea experience. The size, quality and comfort were all fantastic. The owners gave us customer service above and beyond what was expected or required. One of the family members that was on site also made sure to help us with local details and language challenges and she made the stay very special for us. They had fresh flowers and certain basic food items (oil, coffee, salt, pasta, bottled water) waiting and introduced us to local people and even gave us a tour of the town. We will dream of this place for a very long time. I will always be grateful for the beautiful experience they gave our family.
