Overview

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Hardwood floors, 12-foot ceilings, a giant kitchen, big light-filled windows and a columned front porch for R&R - this apartment has all the things that make New Orleans architecture special. Add modern amenities like central air and heat, free WiFi and satellite TV, and you've got the perfect home base from which to explore all this great city has to offer!

Lovingly renovated in 2009 by yours truly, this apartment has some important features that are hard to come by in New Orleans. Number one, we have two large, INDEPENDENT bedrooms for maximum privacy and comfort - no walk-though bedrooms here. We have two FULL baths so no lines for the shower. We're a two story unit, with both bedrooms and one bath upstairs, and the den, kitchen and second bath downstairs - so you can easily steal a nap or a little quiet time whenever it suits you.

But the real appeal here is the neighborhood - as they say, location, location, location! We are one block off bustling Magazine Street, steps from over 30 of New Orleans finest restaurants and bars.

Prefer to dine in? Stock up at the Big Fisherman Seafood Market or Breaux Mart grocery, both two blocks away, and whip up your own culinary masterpiece in our large, fully-stocked kitchen. Should you need to pair that meal with a bottle of fine wine, the folks at Martin Wine Cellar - half a block away, will set you up nicely.

If you're like most, you're coming to New Orleans to indulge - and indulge you should! And when the guilty bug gets you, you've got your choice of yoga classes, gym workouts or spa treatments just steps away to get you feeling refreshed. Add to that a boatload of boutiques, art galleries and antique stores, and you'll understand why we love our neighborhood and our city so much!

In town for a special event? We are a short walk from the Magazine Street bus line and the St. Charles Street car line. So whether you're headed to the Superdome, Arena, French Quarter, Aquarium, D-Day Museum, Convention Center, or other downtown attractions, or the Audubon Park and Zoo or Universities uptown, you can get there quickly, easily, and in style. And Mardi Gras? You're practically ON the uptown parade route, a short walk away to St. Charles Avenue.

New Orleans is a lot to take in. Luckily, we live right next door, and are always eager to lend a helping hand. We are a fun-loving young couple (mid-30s), one a green technology financier and the other a professional musician in a popular local band. Why does that matter to you? Because we love our city and are deeply involved in every aspect of its culture! We invite you to enjoy the suggestions we've left for you about where to go and what to do. And above all we encourage you to ask us questions - we are so proud of our city and we want you to love it as much as we do!

About Aaron Wilkinson

We are a fun-loving young couple (mid-30s), one a green technology financier and the other a professional musician in a popular local band. Why does that matter to you? Because we love our city and are deeply involved in every aspect of its culture!

There's hardly a restaurant, lounge or shop we haven't been to - and there's a good chance we'll know some of the staff wherever you're headed. Tell em we sent ya!

Aaron Wilkinson purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Aaron Wilkinson chose Garden District

When we went house shopping our primary criteria was that we wanted to be able to walk to whatever we needed. Well we got that in spades! We are a short walk from over 30 of the city's finest restaurants, plus a seafood market, grocery and fine wine cellar, as well as a boatload of bars, lounges, boutiques and antique shops. You even have your choice of Yoga studios, gyms and a full service spas right here. Its an established New Orleans fact that Magazine Street has it all!

What makes this apartment unique

This house is over 100 years old - it's a renovated Victorian which means you have all the things that make New Orleans architecture world famous - hardwood floors, 12-foot ceilings, a giant kitchen, big light-filled windows and a columned front porch for R&R, just to name a few.

However, all that Old World style can have it's limitations. Most homes like this in New Orleans are built in what's known as a shotgun style - meaning each room opens to the next from the front to the back of the house. That means many 'two bedroom' homes in New Orleans don't offer much privacy - you have to walk through each bedroom to get to the kitchen, bathroom, etc. Not the case here. We have two large, INDEPENDENT bedrooms for maximum privacy and comfort - no walk-thoughs. We have two FULL baths so no lines for the shower. We're a two story unit, with both bedrooms and one bath upstairs, and the den, kitchen and second bath downstairs - so you can easily steal a nap or a little quiet time whenever it suits you.

Great Time in NOLA

  • 4 of 5

This property was great. Great location, Clean and Well furnished. You can't miss with staying just off of Magazine St. It's easy and close to the bus to take you anywhere in NOLA. The property owner/manager was responsive. The only precaution/concern deals with the low water pressure in the upstairs shower. This has been reported to Aaron and hopefully he'll address it. We would rent this property again..

Clean and authentic feel, all round good vibe.

  • 5 of 5

This was a convenient spot for our visit to the big easy with my husband and his daughter. The layout is relaxed and easy, great kitchen and rocking chairs on the front porch. It was close to the street car and shops on Magazine St. Safe to go for a morning run solo through the bright colored houses. Washer and dryer very nice to have considering the heat. We loved it here and will come back to stay again.

Quiet comfortable place to spend the night!

  • 4 of 5

We were only there to sleep...basically 12 hours. It was a great size for our family of 5. Wonderful location and all the amenities we needed. I would definitely stay again.

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

Pros: cute house, great location next to magazine street, lots of places to explore for food and shops, also 6 blocks from the trolley making it easy to get into the French quarter.

Cons: wish you had a DVD player for the tv downstairs. Also if you are going to be doing construction next door please don't do it when you have renters. We wanted to have a nice relaxing day at the house but we're forced to head out since the hammering and other power tool noise was too loud to hear the tv or focus on a book.

I would stay here again, but only if they promised no construction noise next time.

NOT " gorgeous"

  • 2 of 5

Gorgeous??!! Gotta be joking! Not so much... ..

Really, really, run down. Talk about maximizing your return and false advertising.... NOT charming , beautiful, " gorgeous" or quaint. The kitchen is updated , and a half try on one bath -if the cracked and broken tiling and walls and paint were taken care of. Most all walls peeling and or cracked ( majorly big cracks), broken tiles. TINY backyard -about half the size it should be (or less). Pretty likely the Owner owns both sides and keeps 2 big dogs there ( as their yard extends well over to the other rental side leaving you with a tiny area)-you can see the barkers through the rickety fencing. Scared our sweet old girl so much she refused to be out there. Old & musty. Rock hard beds and old bedding. Cracked and uneven sidewalks, be careful-rusty gate held on with a bike chain, "views" of the dilapidated sidings of the neighbors. In same building ,right next door

( shared wall) , not one but two large barking dogs- from 7A - 11P.

By far the most run down residence we have stayed in -and we travel VRBO lots. The neighborhood is NOT REALLY GARDEN DISTRICT by local purists - close , but NO cigar.... The owner is nice and courteous , and if you don't want to spend much time actually at the place -you're better off. it is a good -sized place , if that's all you are interested in. Generous giving 2 stars, thinking of 1.

Owner's Response: In five-plus years of renting this apartment this is the first review that's not 4 or 5 stars (please see below). Yes, some of the walls are cracked. That's the original late 1800's plaster; we think it's beautiful. This house is an antique, like New Orleans. And we love every inch of it's faded beauty. We strove to modernize the amenities while preserving the antique character of this home. If you're looking for something modern, we suggest you try one of the newly built condos in the Central Business District. Our neighborhood and the houses in it are hundreds of years old, and we love that history.

Great location

  • 5 of 5

Far enough away from the French Quarter, yet a block away from bus lines and within easy walking distance to many restaurants and shops on Magazine. The house was very comfortable and I can't think of anything that was overlooked.
