Why The Owner chose Edgartown

We had been vacationing on the Vineyard on our boat for years and decided that living here would be even better than vacationing here.

What makes this guest house unique

We're located just off the Edgartown Vineyard Haven Road bikepath so it's an easy bike ride to downtown Edgartown, South Beach, State Beach, the YMCA and Felix Neck Sanctuary. Public transportation is right at the end of the street.

Great Location

  • 4 of 5

Enjoyed our stay. 1st night upon arrival was adventurous due to the dark roads with no street lights. Make sure you have a good GPS and your High Beams work properly! The 3 bedrooms were big enough, but all the rooms should have air conditioners in them. The master bedroom is located on the 1st floor and the entire space had a damp-musky smell. All of my belongings (suitcase and bags), including clothing I did not wear had that smell in them. Also, there should be a TV placed in the master bedroom. The mattresses in the bedroom with the twin beds on the 2nd floor should be upgraded to be more comfortable. There were some minor issues with the fans that were provided and Carol-the owner responded promptly to resolve those issues. The guests should be allowed to cool the space even if they leave the house for a couple of hours. ALL the furniture needs upgrading, especially the cooking utensils. The house was in a great location to all the neighboring towns and grocery stores. The backyard was private and simply cute. Despite all that was mentioned above, we had a great time and would recommend staying here.

Location Was Great For the Price

  • 2 of 5

The location was great for where we wanted to be and for the price we paid. The house was old and very dated but not awful. The master bedroom was in the basement and took a few days to get rid of the damp, musty smell but was spacious and had its own full bathroom. We were surprised to learn that absolutely NOTHING was included with the rental. We had to bring all our linens and towels which is pretty customary, but there wasn't even a sponge to clean dishes with, a lighter to light the gas grill (which was empty and we had to switch out the tank) or a dish towel to wipe things down. We were given a ration of 4 garbage bags, one roll of toilet paper in each bathroom and nothing more (not even a roll of paper towels). It just would have been nice knowing ahead of time all the additional items we needed to bring. Many of the dishes in the kitchen were very old and the pots and pans very rusted. We blew the fuses in the bathroom and bedroom on several occasions and they had to be re-set (didn't realize that 2 people could not use a blow dryer and/or iron at the same time). The worst part however was that one day the adults were out at the beach and our 2 teenage daughters were left home. A realtor came by and bribed the girls to let her show the house in exchange for some free dresses at a local shop. This was a major invasion of privacy and extremely worrisome as we left money and jewelry in the locked house while we were away and they had access to it without an adult's permission. We had NO idea the house was even listed for sale. Lastly, in order to get our security deposit back we had to clean the entire house (dusting, vacuuming, bleach bathrooms, take out garbage, etc.) I assumed a cleaning company would come in after we left but that was not the case. We had an enjoyable stay on the island, but I would just want give any prospective renters a heads up before they book this home - it is worth the price, but just be more prepared than we were!

Owner's Response: I'm glad you felt the house was in a great location at a good price. While not advertised, we do provide air conditioning for the lower bedroom to eliminate moisture as the Vineyard is known for it's damp climate. I've been renting this house for 18 years and have always left just a roll of toilet paper in each of the bathrooms and a few trash bags to get people started. Beyond that, guests have availed themselves of the local grocery stores to meet their needs. The final sentence on my welcome letter says I will do my best to accommodate requests for things you've forgotten or need and didn't find in the house. Over the years, I've provided linens, towels, roll away beds, etc. I wish you had let me know there were things you needed, I would have happily provided them. The gas grill has an electric start so even though a lighter wasn't needed, I did bring one over when you requested one. We leave a spare gas tank so that, if the tank goes empty, you are able to continue your grilling process. The house was built in the 80's and has received a number of upgrades over the years (see the photos online). Unfortunately, most older homes do not have electrical service that supports multiple hair dryers and irons at the same time. I only received one request to reset the breakers and it was handled in less than 30 minutes. I did speak to your daughters about the realtors and they said it was fine for them to show the house. My realtor happens to own a local shop and gave them gift certificates as a thank you for allowing the 5 minute walk through. With respect to the cleaning, the lease clearly states that 2 hours of cleaning is included in the rental. In 18 years, I've only had 2 occasions where it took more than 2 hours to clean the house. I appreciate that you left the house in good condition but your security would have been returned with it being just broom clean. We enjoyed having you stay and are glad you felt the home was a good value for the location.

Good size, large house, in about 2.5-3 miles away from J Silvia beach, close to downtown

  • 4 of 5

I did like the house, it's old, but has 3 bedrooms and close to everything. It has a grill in the backyard, parking for 2 cars in the back. The only drawback was that I didn't bring the spices, and had to buy salt, pepper, coffee filters, and washing soap. Also I was surprised that I have to bring my own sheets. The house is located very conveniently - in about 3 miles from the closest beach and from downtown, but I am glad that I brought my car.
