Quiet spot for a rural retreat
This is a great little spot for a quiet rural retreat. If you're looking for a true taste of back country Tuscany then this is a good place to start. The property is lovely and well-appointed with oodles of traditional charm. The garden/veranda/balcony overlooks the stream running through the village and up to the castle tower, and is a great place for breakfast and evening meal. The combined kitchen/living room is spacious and comfortable with all the facilities you need. Upstairs there is a double bedroom with en-suite and a separate bathroom and twin bedroom. There is ample parking outside immediately next to the property. We were welcomed by Robert and Wendy who after a short intro, left us alone to our own devices but are just a few minutes away and on the phone/WhatsApp if you need them. There are no shops in the village but there's a garage, shop, bars and restaurants in Comano a few minutes drive away. The countryside has plenty of good walks of all grades/lengths through chestnut/oak/beech forest and up onto the high tops where the views are wonderful. The locals are all very friendly and Antonio next door can show you around the castle. We'd recommend this for anyone looking for a quiet retreat in rural Tuscany with good food, wine, beer, walks, horses, etc in mind.
Beautiful Home in Castello di Comano!
My husband and I, our two teenage daughters and my brother and his wife stayed in this enchanting home for two nights. We were met by Lorena who brought us the key, showed us around the place and gave us some good tips about the area. Robert was also kind enough to drive over to meet us when we thought Lorena hadn't received our text, but she had, so it all worked out!
The home was very comfortable and spacious with two bathrooms, two beautifully decorated bedrooms and a pull out couch that was very comfortable to sleep in.
The owner thought of every cooking utensil and serving dish we could possibly need in the kitchen and we cooked a delicious dinner of pasta and homemade tomato sauce made from the local sweet tomatoes we bought in town and olive oil and sea salt that was already stocked in the kitchen!
In the morning we awoke to the sound of a herd of goats' bells ringing as they went past and cool breezes which were a nice change from the heat in the cities. The castle was just a few minutes walk from the house and we had time to explore and look at the beautiful views of the surrounding hillside.
It was about 30 minutes drive from Aulla, where we got a train to La Spezia on our way to Cinqueterre. We will definitely be back to stay here on our next visit to the Lunigiana region!
Cozy stone house in the mountains soothed our souls
We chose this unique property for its location - in the middle of interesting places to see in every direction; and for its historic, rustic charm. But we cancelled our first day plans to drive and explore just to stay close and snuggle up, enjoying the ambiance inside and taking long walks around the little town, surrounded by snow topped mountain peaks and historical village settings. We did eventually go farther afield, to Cinqueterre and Lucca, which were great too, but this house welcomed us back each time. We could have stayed a month!
Rob and Lorena were helpful and made us feel welcome, even from a distance.
For future visitors, if it's winter, or even cool weather, say yes to having the heat activated - worth the extra charge (but remember to provide cash for it as you leave). Get to know the terrain in daylight before driving at night, as roads are narrow and curvy and cars can zip around the corners. And take some walks!
Amazing Antique House in Charming Comano
This house was all it promised to be in the listing. The sound of the rushing water from the stream below was wonderful. We had "happy hour" every evening on the patio and it was almost like having a waterfall on the property. This area was not at all touristic or crowded compared to central Tuscany. The surrounding mountains are gorgeous and we hiked right from the house to a small village. I had several written communications with Robert, the owner, before our stay and I almost feel like we are friends. We plan to come back for a week on our next trip to Italy. Superb value!
