Nearby amenities include the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Bodie Island Lighthouse, bird and dolphin watches, boat cruises, parasailing, rent a jet ski, great photography, bike riding, go carts, miniature golf, kayaking, paddle boarding, surfing, wind surfing, kite boarding, visiting historic sites or the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum.

I Wish I Could Have Stayed Longer!

  • 5 of 5

Let me start by saying how accommodating the hosts are of this lovely beach home. Jennifer & Ted Lloyd were very responsive and thorough with regard to my questions, my reservation, and my interests when I inquired about this area of the outer banks.

Their home: I can not say enough about what a wonderfully, comfortable, convenient home this is. Everything is laid out so well, and you get more than enough exercise on those stairs! The views from the decks and crows nest are amazing. We had gorgeous sunrises AND sunsets. I loved how I could walk to the convenience stores, gift stores, some restaurants, etc. The beds are very comfortable, the place is clean, the kitchen is well stocked with your dining wear and all the necessary pots & pans, water cooler, beverage refrigerator....The Works! And if the sand is too hot for one day, you have the convenience of your own private pool right in the backyard!

My friends and I absolutely loved our stay here and we are hoping to make it back to this home sometime in the near future which is not an easy feet coming from Dallas and New Hampshire.

You won't be disappointed staying here!

Thank you Jennifer & Ted!!

We are coming back!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I along with a few friends decided to spend a long weekend in Hatteras and attend the Day at the Docks festival, which I highly recommend. Hatteras in the fall is so beautiful, the peacefulness of the island and the beauty of the beaches is so relaxing after the craziness of suburbia, you will definitely hate to leave it. We found Chillax’n through a friend and what a fantastic find! One of the best that we’ve rented in our 20 years of visiting the outer banks. The owners, Jennifer & Ted are very responsive, answered all our questions quickly and offered invaluable information about the area. The house itself is beautifully decorated, wonderfully comfortable and convenient to everything in the village. We could walk to the General store, gift stores, restaurants, etc. The views from the decks and crow’s nest are amazing, with both ocean and sound views - gorgeous sunrises and sunsets. The house is loaded with amenities – elevator, pool, tv’s in all the bedrooms. The beds are very comfortable, the house is extremely clean, the kitchen is well stocked with all the necessary pots & pans, water cooler and beverage fridge and there’s another full-size fridge on the first floor. We definitely will stay here again and would recommend it all of our friends. Thank you, Jennifer & Ted, for sharing your home!!

nice but....

  • 3 of 5

This was our family's first trip to outer banks area and we were super excited to spend the week at the beach. Overall we had a good time but some unwelcome intruders ruined the vacation for us. Let’s start with the good things:

- The house is as you see in pictures; we had experiences before of the house not being as nice as the pictures but not the case here. House is 3 floors of livable space, with elevator to help carry stuff to the 3rd floor which definitely helped when moving in and moving out.

- The house was clean, bathrooms and kitchen were clean except for some rice we found all under the stove and the coffee pot being a little dirty which wasn’t a deal breaker. There are more than enough things in the kitchen to cook or bake with including plates, utensils, spices, etc..

- Beach is a short walk away

Now the issues we had:

-Unfortunately, on our first night we came across a cockroach running around in the kitchen! We were told that they are common in Hatteras and not to worry about it, but one soon turned into multiple cockroaches. We have been to Myrtle beach, SC, Florida, Virginia Beach vacation homes and never seen a cockroach in any of those places. When we let the owner know that we saw this giant cockroach, we were told they were not cockroaches but were the" famous Hatteras water bug." As you can imagine, it wasn’t something we wanted to deal with and pretty much ruined the rest of the trip for us. The owners did send the exterminator the next day and sprayed around the house and under the pipes, kitchen areas which then prompted them to start coming out of the vents, we had one crawling on the ceiling, the couch in the common area and one of the bedroom walls. We also saw a few dead ones throughout. All in all, we saw about 7 or 8 but those were enough to pretty much ruin our vacation. My 2 kids refused to sleep on their own, so 4 of us slept in the king bed. There is this constant worry that they are around so our carefree vacation was thrown out the window. Also hearing that this is "normal" from the owner, Management Company etc doesn't help.

- If you have kids, you will need to bring your own pool toys, beach toys, beach chairs (2 were provided), umbrellas etc. which is kind inconvenient but we did rent those items locally as it wasn’t provided.

-The pool was nice, but we thought they could throw in the ability to heat the pool without having to pay extra. The size of the pool is a little smaller than pictures

Owner's Response: We do appreciate your feedback and are pleased you enjoyed our home on your first visit to Hatteras Island. As you can see, all past reviews are 5 star, many specifically mentioning the cleanliness and the comfort of our home. I'm happy that both the Property Manager and I were available to handle your daily calls and provide you with immediate service and customer care. As you may or may not know, prior to your stay, the island suffered a 10-day power outage and mandatory evacuation, as well as several days of heavy rain. Unlike Myrtle Beach or Virginia Beach, Hatteras is a very rural area, Palmetto bugs, like any other animal like to seek shelter during heat and rain. As out of state owners of two 5 star properties, communication between guest and owner is key to providing a positive experience for all guests; we can’t fix a problem that we don’t know exists. Had the prior guest notified us during their stay, rather than just writing a review, we could have addressed the palmetto bug the week before your stay. As for children’s pool toys, we find it’s best that parents provide their own age appropriate toys.

Conflicted

  • 3 of 5

While the house is very beautiful and roomy we had a few disappointments.

We had a few housekeeping issues when we arrived. We contacted the Maintenance company and they were non-responsive. Overall we contacted them 3 times. No issues were addressed during our stay.

The issues were -

Overall the cleanliness of the place was below average. I don't know how you monitor your cleaning service, but the bathrooms could have been cleaner. Toilets, especially around where seat attached to toilet was pretty gross. This was consistent in every bathroom I used. Bed linens and towels were very clean. Floors were not very clean when we arrived, some of the counters could have been cleaned better. Drawers and shelves in kitchen could have used a good wipe down as well.

Elevator - one of the 2 lights was out

Bunk bedroom - ceiling fan light was out which was also the only light for the room. There was also no way to control the ceiling fan so it was either on full speed or off. One of the bathroom lights was out as well.

Pool - lights around pool were inoperable

Daybed - The trundle bed was severely broken, we discovered this when trying to set the bed up. When trundle was pulled out the bed collapsed. The only way to use the bed was to keep trundle underneath the bed. We were hoping this issue was just a few loose screws but the bed is not fixable.

Bugs - When calling the maintenance company for the 2nd time about the roaches they pretty much blew me off, saying its NC there are bugs. I live in Florida, we have bugs, we get roaches. If you treat your property for them then you don't have them. This was particularly disgusting when I was making dinner and there were a couple roaches on the counter tops.

Also there could have been lamps in all the rooms. The family room only has the overhead lights (could have used a floor lamp), the master bedrooms only had a lamp on one side of the bed, the other rooms have no lamps at all. When your winding down from a day on the beach you don't want to have to get out of bed to turn out the lights.

The house is beautiful, we had a mini family reunion for my Mother-in-laws 80th birthday. The location was great, easy access to the beach and we thoroughly enjoyed the pool after a day on the beach. While we enjoyed staying at this house the issues we had took away from our overall experience. We would recommend this property to others, hoping that the owners will take our suggestions to heart.

Owner's Response: We do appreciate your feedback and are so pleased you enjoyed our home and Hatteras Island. I see you have recommended our home to others so want to say thank you! As you can see all past reviews are 5 star, many specifically mentioning the cleanliness and the comfort of our home. Our Property Manager has always provided us with great service and customer care. I have updated our manager with your concerns and they have addressed the issues you described. I would also like to mention that they and the island were still recovering from a 10 day power outage and mandatory evacuation just a week prior to your stay. Even with the disaster, our managers office is fully staffed 9 to 5, 7 days a week with after hour emergency staff available to always take care of any reported issues. Both ourselves and our Property Manager are sorry your personal expectations were not met and do hope you come back to our lovely island again. All the best to you and yours.

Excellent family home

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at this home and it was wonderful. The proximity to the beach was perfect and our kids had a blast in the pool when they weren't at the beach. The house was very clean and had everything we needed to have an enjoyable beach vacation. Everyone wanted to stay another week! The owners are very accommodating and consistently replied to our emails and questions. The only suggestion I would make is to update the DVD system. It was a little confusing with so many remote controls. I gave this home a 5 star rating because our friends and family had a 5 star experience!
