About Margie Rikert

Goethe wrote, and I wholeheartedly believe: 'Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it.

Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.'

I thoroughly enjoy meeting people, and we have developed friends all over the world. A favorite place is The Netherlands where we once lived, and I dream of returning to Australia for an extended stay. I really enjoy ocean kayaking, rock-climbing, casual biking, and hiking. I am surprised at my 'addiction' to the iPad which I have been able to incorporate into many aspects of my life... working with elderly hospice patients, cooking gourmet foods at home, or reading National Geographic by the fire at night.

We strive for a smaller impact on our world with strong tenets of sustainability in our daily lives.

Why Margie Rikert chose Forest Park

This is apartment is part of our home.

We live in a uniquely sited place that will soothe your spirit. Come to write, to explore, to read, to unwind.

Our home sits on the edge of Forest Park in NW Portland, which makes it feels as if you were miles and miles from no-where, and yet is 5 minutes by car from the night-life and shops of the Nob Hill area, and the city public transit system.

Forest Park is a magnificent resource for residents and visitors alike. It’s future depends on the personal stewardship gained from appreciation of it’s magic; and that can only be developed by spending time within it… Listening, watching.

Guidebooks are around around for identification of native trees, flowers, birds, and animals… and conversations about invasive species can lead to deeper insight and possible action. The bee hives are a source of conversation (and honey).

The hosts are deeply involved in the stewardship of the forest, and reducing the impacts that the house and guests will have on the ecosystem. The home has solar panels for hot water and electrical generation. It is heated by an air-source heat pump. Foods and drinks served are sourced locally, supporting small businesses. Guest service incorporates environmentally responsible products for personal use and laundry, recycling, and conscious choice. 10% of profits are tithed in support of on-going maintenance and protection of Forest Park.

What makes this apartment unique

walking, birding, just being in a beautiful restful place. We are right on the edge of Forest Park... the 5000 acre wooded park in Portland.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The apartment worked very well for me. The DSL is a bit slow... But I set up my own hotspot. Margie and David reacted quickly when there was a problem. Very comfortable living arrangements, beautiful location. Great for afterwork runs.

VRBO Bear stayed here

Jun 29, 2016

This Magical Woodland Home sits right on the edge of Forest Park, a breath-taking 5,000-acre urban forest right in the middle of Portland. Driving up the long driveway, this Bear family felt a million miles away from the bustling city, despite there being a shopping center and grocery store just 5 minutes away. We loved being surrounded by the towering trees, the serene grounds of our apartment and seeing two deer in the backyard. David and Margie were the perfect hosts, making sure we had everything we needed and were quick to answer any questions we had. We appreciated the special touches in the apartment including the bag of toys and pack n play left out for our little bear cub. Margie also said we were welcome to pick fresh blueberries from the blueberry bushes in the backyard! The apartment had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. In the bathroom, we loved the Sandalwood soap and lemon-flavored lip balm as well as the eco-friendly containers of shampoo and conditioner. There was also a wide assortment of books and board games for those wanting to enjoy a relaxing evening at home. This Bear family wanted to explore the city, and we appreciated the many books on places to visit and things to do in Portland. The apartment is just a short drive from Nob Hill, a bustling, quaint neighborhood with plenty of restaurants, shopping and the always-popular Salt & Straw ice cream shop. This was our first trip to Oregon and we couldn’t have asked for better accommodations. It was the perfect place to stay for these Bears who wanted to experience both Portland’s scenic beauty as well as life in the city. We would definitely stay here again!

This stay exceeded our expectations

  • 5 of 5

Our hosts (Margie and David) were welcoming, attentive, and kind. They were there to help if needed but were also careful to respect our privacy. The spotless and comfortable apartment had an amazing patio area and views to the beautifully landscaped property and the Forest Park evergreen woods that surround it. We (and our teenage boys) were delighted with our stay – we would return in a heartbeat and would recommend it to anyone looking for a superior lodging experience in Portland.

Perfect Retreat

Beautiful apartment and location. Was the perfect place to stay while visiting Portland with our daughter. Very close to hikes in the park and minutes from the city. Beautiful spot to wake up to and come back to relax and enjoy. Will definitely stay here again when we come back.

My husband and I stayed the entire month of August in Margie and David’s ground floor apartment. What a find! This was our first experience with a vacation rental, and we couldn’t have been happier with our choice. The apartment was clean and comfortable and decorated in a way that made our stay all that more relaxing. Margie and David are wonderful and attentive hosts.

We were a bit concerned about whether an under-the-counter fridge would suffice for us, but it worked out surprisingly well. This apartment is especially nice for folks who like to hike. Several trail heads are literally just across the road. And when you’re not out hiking or taking in the sites around Portland, just sitting outside by the fountain watching the squirrels and birds is thoroughly relaxing. In a word, we found it phenomeltastic!

Beautiful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this downstairs living space for 3 nights. We're glad we did! It has large windows in the living room area, and doors which open to a private patio. It's nice to sit on the patio and watch & listen to the fountain. Birds & squirrels add to the natural setting. The grounds are beautiful - they take good care of their natural landscaping and even have a vegetable garden (Margie even shared some freshly-picked veggies with us!).

The kitchen has everything you need.

The bedroom has a view of their natural surroundings, as does the bathroom (which has a nice tub).

The space is stocked with books & games, it has a dining room area, and has a good heating & cooling system.

Even though the home is in a peaceful, natural setting, it is not far at all from downtown Portland.

I can't think of anything I'd improve on - Margie & David have done a wonderful job with this space and we're grateful to have enjoyed it. They are wonderful, friendly people! I highly recommend staying here.

Relaxing Mountainside Retreat

  • 5 of 5

For those looking for a place to start their journeys from in Portland this is the place ! An idyllic setting in the mountainside of Portland you begin with the welcoming smiles of Margie and David (along with Alice, their Golden Retriever, who also has a big grin). You can decide to just stay in the city and discover Portland which is an easy 10 minute ride downtown or adventure off to other wonders of Oregon. Many are within 1-2 hour car ride. Ape Cave, The Fruit Loop, Mt St Helens, and Silver Falls Trail are just a few to visit.

Lastly and most importantly were the accommodations. Margie and David have an incredible VRBO that were top notch and rival any I've seen. My wife, myself and our 2 sons,(17 and 15)had ample room without walking over each other. The amenities and upgraded living space was well worth our stay. Very quiet at night and the cool night air made for ideal sleeping conditions.(along with the very comfortable bed). Margie and David always made sure that we were not in need of anything and made us feel like the only guests in town. I would highly recommend this VRBO and I would be surprised if you could find any better than this in the Portland area. Kudos to this couple who had welcomed us as one of their family.

Relaxing and beautiful setting!

  • 5 of 5

Wow! We loved our stay and wished that we could have stayed longer. The setting in the woods was peaceful and the lodging spacious, clean, and well crafted. Great hikes nearby and close to downtown. Margi was very welcoming and helpful with suggestions and this was perfect for my husband, me, and our 6 year old daughter. Look forward to coming back again!
