About the property

4 Bedrooms 1.5 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6 adults plus 2 children in bunk-beds

Located on the mainland at the Ocean's edge in a beautiful cove looking out at Clark Island and the open sea, our cottage was built in the classic rustic Maine style of the mid twentieth Century. The Township of Clark Island is one of a group of small Towns located on the St. George Peninsula. The peninsula is alive with boaters, bicycle clubs on vacation and legions of kayakers visiting Penobscot Bay. From the little lobstering village of Port Clyde at one end (with daily ferry service to Monhegan Island) to the Town of Rockland at the other end (in 2009 voted the second best small town to live in in the USA by Budget Travel; ) the whole area is considered the heart of mid-coast Maine. At the foot of the road the cottage is located on, there is the Craignair Inn of Clark Island, with a gourmet restaurant. This area is why they call Maine 'Vacationland, where life is the way it ought to be.' Call (207) 593 - 7183 or (978) 201 3954

Easy to get to: Knox County airport is 5 miles from the cottage, with up to 8 direct flights daily to Boston's Logan airport on Cape Air Airlines. Under $70 each way, with car rental available at airport. Or drive from Boston in under 4 hours.

Ferry to Nova Scotia from Rockland. Hourly, daily or weeklong schooner tours from Rockland and Camden.

About Jim and Linda McConchie

Retired Attorney (James) and Former Manager of the Freedom Trail in Boston (Linda); Jim studied at Colby College and haven't missed a trip to Maine every year since1949.

Jim and Linda McConchie purchased this cottage in 1956

Why Jim and Linda McConchie chose Spruce Head

Ownership now resides in Trust for a third generation and soon a fourth, ensuring family use for more generations to come. This is a classic Maine cottage, built in the 1950's in that style that has almost disappeared due to the high cost of waterfront land and the McMansions being built as the original cottages disappear. Fifty feet from the water's edge, with a screened porch enabling sitting outside and listening to the ocean, the cottage has been thoroughly updated and modernized, but still captures that era when waterfront cottages were part of nature, not castles to sit in and look out at it.

Everything one needs for lobster and clam cookouts on the rocks, barbeques plus a firepit for s'mores, and views across to Clark Island and the open sea.

Large windows from the bedrooms on the ocean side offer views unchanged from the day it was built.

Watch the lobster boats right out front; kayak from right out front, or just watch the constant activity of the seagulls, seals, osprey, fox, deer, even an occasional moose and a family of eagles. This is the heart and the essence of mid-coast Maine living.

'Maine, the way life ought to be.'

What makes this cottage unique

This cottage offers a chance to relive the New England and Maine lifestyle from the middle of the last century. Thoroughly modernized, with cable, large Sony TV, internet, WII, Blueray and a charming fireplace and stacks of wood right outside. At the same time, you are a fifteen minute drive away from the towns and villages in the heart of mid-coast Maine.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Jim,

Where to begin other than to tell you how very much we enjoyed the cottage!? As I mentioned to you on the phone, we have been renting in the area on and off for the past 20 years and have never experienced such bliss. The view is fantastic and we felt we were almost on a house boat. We love the light and your choice of white furniture

is perfect. ( Many of our former cottages were dark with brown panelling.) The furniture is very comfortable, again not always the case, and having a TV was indeed an extra bonus.

The best part of all is the screened-in porch. We lived out there and have never found one in previous cottages.

I could go on and on, but suffice to say, we are thrilled that we found you and would love to return next summer. I am trying to see if we could manage two weeks rather than one.

We send good wishes to you and your family and we will be in touch!

Warmly,

Maggie

Idyllic ocean front cottage with kayak launch site

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lovely week at this cottage which is located in a very private area of Midcoast Maine. Although we are Mainers, this spot surpassed our expectations. We are well accustomed to enjoying the Maine coast but this property is an A+. There were 5 Millenials with us and they rave about this experience. We rented kayaks from Port Clyde Kayak. They delivered and picked up the kayaks. The "kids" kayaked every day, even when the weather was misty and a bit chilly. The cottage itself is a gem. It afforded us all privacy and communal time. The TV and the internet are excellent so we were able to watch first-run movies and TV shows. We cooked every evening and had the equipment we needed for fairly complicated dishes. On the days that were less than perfect, we drove to the Farnsworth Museum and the Olsen House to enjoy Andrew Wyeth. Rockport and Camden have restaurants and a vineyard for wine tasting. This rental was to celebrate my daughter's graduation from Medical School. We all agree that it was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the scenery as well as the comfort of the cottage. Our communication with Jim was excellent which made the entire experience easy and without hassle. This rental is a very good value. Thanks again, Jim, for a memorable time!

Owner's Response: We have had a number of favorable reviews over the years, but yours is unique in that you were a group of six Maine residents familiar with what one might expect while spending a week on the ocean early in the season. There is so much to see and do that even a foggy day or two can be spent checking out the numerous places there are to visit in the area. Thank you, fellow Mainers, for your kind words.

Lovely place to stay, highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

Jim quickly responded to our initial inquiry and made the entire process easy! He checked in after our arrival to make sure we had what we needed and were comfortable. The cottage has beautiful views, is very comfortable and private. We enjoyed "hanging" out and our dog felt very much at home (sorry for all the dog hair). We followed Jim's advice re: restaurants and enjoyed meals at Watermans (now closed permanently), Millers, Primo, Happy Clam, Home Kitchen, Café Miranda etc. Thoroughly relaxing trip and a great place to stay. Thank you for sharing your cottage with us. It was wonderful!!!

Owner's Response: Linda and I appreciate your kind comments about your vacation in Maine. There are so many things to do while you are there, at the cottage and in the area. It is also, of course, doggy heaven for pets. And don't worry about pet hairs...our cleaning crew are masters at taking care of that! We hope you will come back soon. Jim

Lovely cottage and magnificent views!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was absolutely lovely and was perfect for our family. The views are spectacular, the setting is private and quiet, and the house is clean, well-stocked, and welcoming. We could not have asked for a better place for our week in Maine. We enjoyed especially walking to the nearby sandy beach, just relaxing at the house and admiring the views, and traveling to nearby Rockland and Lockport for outings. We hope to return every year!

Perfectly Awesome Oceanside Maine Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband, myself and our dog had a wonderful and much needed get -away trip to this beautiful ocean side classic Maine cottage. This was a special anniversary trip for us so researched several, places before deciding to stay here. The owner Jim was in contact with me shortly after my initial request and he checked in by email to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed and encouraged us to call him if any problems which we had none. This cottage was very clean, quiet, comfortable, casual and just want we needed and wanted. Everything was exactly as described and much more, there is a notebook on the cottage dining room table with all the details about the giant tv, wifi and local places to eat and visit. The fireplace was a welcome touch, large open main living/dining room, kitchen with everything needed plus bedrooms with all the great furnishings made this the real deal Maine cottage. We loved waking up to the ocean and island views, enjoyed amazing scenery from inside the cottage and outside right in front yard of changing tides, lobster boats, giant rocks, sky, island views and water birds and ducks was just so wonderful to experience. This cottage is truly pet friendly with no extra fees and our dog loved it here as much as we did. We had very good meals in near-by Rockland and Port Clyde plus visited local lighthouses. This cottage is a great "get away from it all" but not for someone looking for trendy touristy attractions--it was a perfectly awesome cottage for us and one of the best places we have stayed at over the past 30 years of traveling this great country of ours! Thank you for allowing us to stay at your wonderful cottage---was a very special trip and meant a lot to us to be able spend time in such a amazing Maine location! Ready to return there already! Thank you!

Owner's Response: What can we say other than thank you for your kind review. We are fortunate to have an oceanfront lot where the views haven't changed in the sixty years we have owned it. It is possible to add all the comforts available today while retaining the ambiance of a classic 1950's "Maine cottage." We won't let this one disappear like so many of them have!

Perfect getaway with the solitude that we were looking for and a view that is beyond words. It was a perfect winter getaway. It was a spectacular setting with the snow and ocean. Even while sitting in the living room with the fire you still were able to see out the 2 picture windows. The cottage is very large and it felt like coming home. It had everything that we needed plus more. I cannot thank the owners enough, They definitely went above and beyond. My family and I have stayed at 20 or more vacation rentals over the last couple of years and I would place this at number 1. You are missing out if you do not go during the winter, the setting you will experience will stay with you for a long time. I also want to recommend if your looking for a local restaurant not one of those chain places is Rockland Café out of all the places we dined at they are the best. Fresh homemade food. (You would swear that your Grandmother or Mom was in the back cooking)

Thank you again Jim and Linda for sharing your amazing home with us, We look forward to staying again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. All the more appreciated because you spent a week in March here during the incredibly rough winter we had this year. The beauty you experienced being Oceanside when the snow is piled up is extraordinary. The fireplace and the 52' cable TV become all the more alluring. Most of all, however, is the almost absolute silence you experience. Just the sound of waves 50 ' away and the sea gulls is as relaxing as it gets. Fortunately, Maine is equipped to handle any type of weather, so one can stay in or go at as you please. We were happy to hear that your visit led to your daughter applying for early admission to college in Maine. We hope to see you again soon!
