THE LITTLE HOUSE THAT COULD...
The home had the important things we needed: space/beds for 12, great A/C, good water pressure in showers and a good location. The home is old and tired with a hodge-podge of surfaces, color, and furnishings from top to bottom-an event in itself. The outside grounds are in need of a lot of work, but the front yard was mowed and clean. The stove/oven was a giant iron monster that quickly heated up the kitchen and needed to be lit with every use. I recommend asking for specific instructions on exactly where to light the oven and what knob lights what...singed arm hairs for our strongest and bravest men! Yikes! Plenty of bath towels, linens, toilet paper. There was a large extra freezer, decent amount of beach blankets and towels, and a nice big wagon to pack your beach gear for the walk. And the added convenience of a washer and dryer if you need it. We were unable to use the outdoor grill as planned the first night because the propane tank was empty, the tank was replaced by the next day. The front yard was big and shady and gave us a cool place to spend time playing corn-hole, sitting in our hammock (we brought that) and people watching. There are two ways to either drive or walk to the beach, walking was about 30 minutes. We walked both the boardwalk (public) and the private walk. I much preferred the private walk which led us through a tiny section of some interesting homes. We hiked Mt. Pisgah which was 150+ steps of wood stairs and gives you a nice view. Recommend breakfast at deBoers, the Vanilla French toast with apples was perfect. Just remember it closes at 1pm. The owners were very quick in responding to my questions and pleasant. We enjoyed our stay and had fun in the little house that could.
Great location steps to the beach and 2 ice cream shops (what's not too love). 3 teenagers enjoyed themselves too.
Just ok--location was great---house not so much!!
The location is perfect, a short walk to Lake Michigan Beach, and across the street from The "General Store", which served Ice cream of soooo many flavors, fries, hot dogs etc, etc.
However...the deck on the front of the house was ok--the grounds around the house were completely unkept. The Grill did not work, and even if it did it was not very condusive to grilling what with all the debri strewn all over it as well as the area it was in.
The potentially great view of the lake and waterway was blocked by totally unkept grounds surrounding the house.
The parking was satisfactory, except for the fact the the directions on parking were not relayed clearly in the "Rules book" of the house. We had to find out about proper parking from the neighbors, who I might add were very nice people.
The kitchen was laid out nicely. There is ample counter space for cooking and preparing food especially for a large group. The eating are was ample.
The family room was large and accommodating.
However, the cobwebs were plenty and the bugs in the house and beds were at least friendly, but plentiful.
In general the house needs a good cleaning. I would guess the owners have a cleaning service,,,,, which is not doing a proper job--or the owners are paying minimal for a minimal cleaning of the house.
The washrooms need help...locks on the doors would help. Working lights throughout the house would be beneficial, especially when there's are little children who may need help in the middle of the night. Or for that matter, adults who get up in the middle of the night to help those children.
If only this house looked half as good as the neighbors, we would rent it again.
Needless to say, I would not recommend this house as a rental--I really dont understand how the past reviews were so good.
Charming, rustic cottage
Our family of 6 adults and 4 children had a wonderful time in Holland, and we were pleased with the accommodations. The pictures of the main level don't quite do it justice. The dining room has a large table as shown, but also a table for 4 (perfect for kids), and two bar seats. Kitchen is well stocked and big enough to maneuver around each other. The large mudroom was perfect for loading/unloading and storing all beach items. It had plenty of beach chairs, a cart, and a rolling cooler, upright freezer, long countertop space and washer/dryer. Very convenient when coming to and from the beach. The only thing missing was an outdoor shower, but the hose was sufficient.
Upstairs was as advertised. It could use some updates but was comfortable and spacious. Our kids enjoyed the piano and it was nice to have some toys, games, and books provided. Had a great stay and would love to come back to this charming town.
Great place to stay with a large group of people!
The house was large enough for the 11 people we had in our group. The kitchen was perfectly appointed with everything we needed to make meals. The old stove was a treat to use! The propane grill outside was broken. Luckily some of the men in our group knew how to fix it, clogged gas line, so we were able to grill out a few nights. The front porch was perfect for relaxing and watching the cars and boats/ships go by. Great location to the beach and local tourist sites. We all had a wonderful time! Thanks for letting us use your home!! Lovely town and surrounding areas!
The house has character
This house is in a great location. The beach is near by. The landscape provided the right amount of privacy on the porch. There is a nicely shaded grass area in front of the house. (I am not sure if it is privately owned or part of the state beach. Great place for a hammock or some lawn games.)
If we find ourselves vacationing in that area again, this house will be on the top of our list.
