The owner has been in the rental business for over 20 years and has built, restored, and made available for rent many custom homes throughout Wisconsin's Northwoods. The owner studied Hospitality Management at the University of Wisconsin.
David Byczek purchased this lodge in 2012
The owner owns a vacation home in nearby Sister Bay and has enjoyed the Door County area with family and friends for years. When this beautiful lodge came on the market, the owner bought it with the intent of providing a unique opportunity for families and friends stay in one place while enjoying all that Door County has to offer.
This property is one of a kind, both in it's funtion and enviroment. Staying at this property enables a large extended family or group of friends to stay in one location but still have their own privacy and space. The location - on Green Bay and in northern Door County - allow for water sport recreation out the back door and a more quiet and slower paced day than you would have in lower Door county, but with only a five minute drive to Sister Bay and twenty minute drive to Fish Creek.
In response to the September 15, 2015 review. We are sorry that our guests were unhappy
The heat and hot water were fixed as soon as we were informed that they were not working. The toilet seat was also replaced as soon as we were made aware that is was broken. Our guests were there for 2 nights by the time we found out about the heat not working we took care of it in a timely manner.
As most people that live or stay in Door County know, the water is heavily laden with iron. The iron stains the toilets and tubs. We do clean with an iron remover. The Lodge is cleaned regularly during the season (before and after each new guest), but we do not get a full de-ironing treatment until the end of each rental season. We do have iron filters as well as a soft water unit filled with iron tablets.
The property is continuously being updated. We have done much remodeling in the 3 seasons in which we have owned the property. We have put in new flooring, cabinets, countertops, appliances etc... The entire Lodge was repainted 24 months ago. The exterior of the property has been resided and a new roof put on 30 months ago.
We are continuously improving and upgrading The Lodge. We have a The Lodge professionally cleaned and the linens and towels professionally cleaned. We welcome you to comeback and try again. Again, we are sorry you were dissatisfied. Thank you.
This place is really good to accommodate a large group because of the suites with their own bathrooms and is perfectly located. However, it is in need of attention. One suite heat wasn't working. Another suite hot water stopped luckily it was our last day there. Another suites toilet seat broke. Our suites bathroom was a tad on the disturbing side. The toilet bowl was disgusting (looked like dirt settled at the bottom but it was permanent) along with the shower/bathtub and the suite was dusty. Both needs ripped out. The beds were planks. Pillows where great! This kitchen worked for us cooking for all of us which was nice. We were there with different families for a funeral so it worked perfect for us. I do hope some remodeling will be done because it's actually a prime location. I would not stay there again until that is done.
We just finished a week at the Ben Lodge, and had a great time! There were 16 of us ranging in age from 20 to 59, and we had never been to Door County before. We were quite taken, and impressed with the large variety of things to see and do.
The lodge appears to originally have been an inn, and one of the interior walls has a cutaway to show the log construction (which has since been built over with normal walls -- hence the cutaway).. It later was redone into a B&B, but now is rented as a single building.
Seven of the guest rooms are one bedroom suites, four upstairs and three downstairs. Each has a large seating area (sometimes in an adjacent connected room) and a bathroom. One room has two queen beds, while the rest have one queen or king bed. Some of the rooms also have fold out couches. The eighth suite, which is upstairs, is a larger two bedrooms suite. It includes its own living room, small kitchen and a shared bathroom. The bedrooms in this suite each have a queen or king bed. All of the bedrooms have ceiling fans, as well as air conditioners.
Downstairs is a full kitchen, eating area, TV lounge and large living room. The kitchen is well equipped for a large group, though a little short on large pots. All bedroom, bathroom and kitchen linens are provided, but they do ask that you bring your own beach towels. Everything was very clean and well maintained.
The WiFi worked very well in most of the building, but struggled in parts of certain rooms which were directly behind the thick log walls from the router -- if you moved to a different part of the same room, it worked fine. TVs with cable connections and DVD players were in each bedroom, plus the TV lounge. Cell phone connections from multiple companies were highly variable, depending on the time of day.
Out back are a lawn, charcoal grills and picnic tables shared with several smaller cabins, and extending down to a good sized wharf, which has a spectacular view of the sunset over Ellison Bay.
A small grocery store is next door to the lodge -- the selection is limited, so you won't want to do your primary shopping there, but it's really convenient when you realize you're out of some basic food, or to pick up a newspaper in the morning. A coffee shop and a couple of restaurants are within a block in either direction.
I have stayed at this Lodge in Ellison Bay, WI in early summer 2013. I found the property to be very welcoming and comfortable, with wonderful beds. Great place to relax with family and friends (which also has privacy suites within), in the beautiful location of Door County. I would stay again and also recommend it to others.
My husband and I stayed at this lodge back in June of this year. The place is beautiful.....beautiful lake front setting. Place was clean, newly remodeled kitchen, new flooring, cable, Wi-Fi, all the amenities you need to make your stay enjoyable. The neighbors were telling us the place was in horrible shape until the new owners (August, 2012) took over. They have made a lot of improvements. Each room has it's own theme. This place will be great for our next family reunion.
