-------------------------------------------------UPDATES--------------------------------------------

Property is currently available to rent between June 30th, 2017 & September 7th, 2017.

We mainly aim to rent the property out to families or groups looking for a quiet and relaxing getaway from the city. Maximum group size of 10 allowed, excluding small children.

---------------------------------------------DESCRIPTION-------------------------------------------

PROPERTY

Built in the early 1930s, this rustic cedar cottage named Rowanlea and adjacent boathouse retain many of their old-world charms in spite of recent renovations that make them comfortable by today's standards. Situated right on Lake Simcoe (1-1.5 hours north of Toronto) and surrounded by a leafy grove on one side and a huge lawn on the front, this nearly one acre property is a quick and peaceful escape from the city. There are 5 bedrooms in the main cottage (6 beds) and 2 bedrooms in the boathouse (1 queen bed and 1 twin bed). Perfect for families, nature-loving groups, and retreats. Free Wi-fi Internet access on the property. Groceries, liquor/beer stores, convenience stores are within 10 minutes from the property.

We welcome groups or families who respect nature and recognize the hand-made beauty of dwellings created in a bygone age. This is a wonderful place to enjoy as a retreat from the city but is not a place for loud partying (the property is located in a peaceful residential area). No smoking inside. Basic toiletries are provided, however guests are responsible to bring their own linens and towels (except under special circumstances where this is not possible - extra fee would apply). Pets are welcome!

MAIN COTTAGE

First Floor: Spacious living room with a gorgeous stone fireplace, a wood-burning stove, and an old piano; Sun room with ten large windows; Dining room that can seat 10; Library/bedroom with a TV, DVD player (along with a small DVD collection); Newly modernized Ikea kitchen with a range of appliances; Bathroom with a tub, shower, & washer/dryer; Small bedroom with a double bed.

Second Floor: 2 small bedrooms with double beds; small bathroom with sink and toilet; a large master bedroom with 2 double beds, a TV with DVD player, an electronic keyboard, and lots of floor space.

Outside: Surrounding the cottage is a grove to the side, a very large front lawn, and a large deck at the back facing the lake with a barbecue and picnic table.

BOATHOUSE

The boathouse is a small, separate 2-bedroom structure with uplifting aquatic colours, and is right at the water's edge. It is included with the rental of the main cottage.

Top Floor: Bedroom with queen bed, chest of drawers, TV with DVD player, air conditioning, breakfast table; Bathroom with sink, toilet and shower; Kitchenette with oven, microwave, toaster oven, small fridge, kettle, electric wok and basic kitchen supplies; stairs down to lower floor; front balcony overlooks the lake, private (sunbathing!).

Lower floor: The lower level is made of fresh pine and has sliding glass doors that open onto a deck in the water; the room has a twin bed and desk. With waves lapping at your feet, you'll feel as though you're in a boat!

SHORELINE

The wide and stony shoreline has a fire pit, 2 surrounding decks, a wooden dock extending from the waterside deck (out from mid-June to mid-September) and a canoe. Life jackets are supplied. The water is very clear and the beach is gradual, which makes for great swimming. We provide some water shoes (recommended for swimming) as well as a few mask and snorkel sets.

The sun sets immediately in front, usually leaving the sky a beautiful, blazing incarnadine.

Why Rena Helms-Park (Property Owner), Adam Park (Son) and Tara Park (Daughter) chose Lake Simcoe

This property (Rowanlea) was bought by our family (the Parks from Lancashire, who arrived in Canada in 1830) in the 19th century and has been in the family for at least 6 generations. The Parks were the second family to build in this part of Lake Simcoe cottage country (the Barracks being the first). The maiden great, great aunts - very proper ladies who made a pact not to marry - were responsible for many of the curious artifacts that you'll find here. (They are buried in St George's Anglican Church in Sutton.) Recently, we fell upon a local newsletter and found out the following about Stephen Leacock and Harry Park, Inspector of the Normal Schools, who built the cottage:

'Stephen’s perception of life in 1880s rural Ontario was quaint but not cozy

and the education

system was evidently

found lacking

by his mother.

When she noticed

the children losing

their Hampshire

accent she pulled

them out of the

country school and

taught them herself ....Feeling she could go no further with their education on her own, Mrs. Leacock hired

a tutor, local man Harry Park (from the

family for which Park Road is named). Mr.

Park was, by all accounts, an excellent

teacher.' ( for more. There are other biographies of Leacock that speak about Harry Park, a strict but intellectually stimulating Greek and Latin tutor.)

Harry's children (including the 5 great-great aunts mentioned above) were generally very erudite, so it seems that the Leacock family continued to visit Rowanlea in the 1940s.

Our family is dedicated to preserving Rowanlea despite the costs (which outweigh the price of building a modern dwelling). We did, however, sell the 'third lot' in order to pay for the bolstering of the cottage foundation!

We hope that you feel the presence of Canadian history (including the rich, relatively unacknowledged legacy of the First Nations) when you're here.

perfect cottage for a family getaway

 • 5 of 5

we stayed at this place for the last 5 days of August 2016.

The cottage is classic, had everything we needed , well equipped kitchen, spacious rooms, great yard for the kids to play.

The view is amazing and the boat house was great.

it has private beach and the water is shallow for the kids to swim .

Owners very easy to talk to and very helpful.

Definitely we are going back and the kids loved it.

A perfect cottage for a family gathering

 • 5 of 5

Not sure what we can add to what people have already said who have fully described the property...

Rowanlea is a classic traditional Canadian cottage – the kind they don’t build any more.

The kitchen is exceptional, replete with cooking equipment and large pantry type cupboards containing plenty of crockery, glasses and commonly needed staples such as spices. It has a gigantic working counter open to the dining room with its huge table and ten chairs. When you add the BBQ outside it allowed easy cooking even for a crowd. Depending on the weather we were able to switch between eating in the dining room and on the adjacent rear deck and even with a large group have everyone seated together at a single table. This was very special.

Laundry and bathroom facilities are very good. Loads of sleeping spaces are dotted between the two levels in both the main cottage and the boat house.

Loved the books, artworks, musical instruments, comfortable furniture, bits and pieces from the family's life that we were allowed to share. Lights, electricity coped admirably with our demands. Hot water nearly did. We did have more people than usual staying at the cabin so the hot water situation nudged past the critical point.

Loved the added space of the boathouse and the privacy of the dock. So many special spaces on the grounds for a little privacy, a fire at night, all kinds of games on the lawn, accessible parking, treed site, boats, lake views (those sunsets!). The amount of room available allowing all to have a private space should be noted.

The cottage is easy to reach by routes both direct and scenic from the city and stores for all needs are found within an easy drive. There is a large garbage holder at the road that safely houses filled garbage, recycling and compost containers until collection day. The cottage is on well water but a water cooler/dispenser is provided.

In short, Rowanlea was just about perfect for our family gathering and will be remembered fondly for years.

Beautiful historic lake cottage with sunsets!

 • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at this beautiful lake cottage. The home is spacious and has a roomy kitchen, large dining table and several gathering spots for sitting, including the beautiful sun room during the day, the cozy library and the history filled fireplace room. The lake front has a gorgeous view for sunsets, and we used both the canoe and rowboat. The beach area is rocky but with water shoes on easy to get around and out to swim. The owners were very helpful with our last minute request to rent in mid-June. Beaverton is close for groceries, etc. but we spent most of time enjoying the water, the large grassy area in front and the beautiful historic home. Lots of rooms for a variety of people to stay here. Small family reunions would work wonderfully here. There is a many floor bathroom with a tub/shower and a bedroom on the main floor for someone who has difficulty with stairs. Many thanks to Rena and Adam for getting it ready for our stay in mid-June this year!

Rowanlea boathouse weekend

 • 4 of 5

Stayed there at the Boathouse this past weekend...Amazing view of the lake ! great place to barbeque and watch sunsets from the balcony. Very bright and cheery ( I liked the bright colours and funky retro decor ) The place was rustic but clean and my bed was comfortable. Had to send a few spiders to meet their maker!

think I will re book for early September.

From a bygone era

 • 5 of 5

I am at Rowanlea, sitting in the dining room of the main cottge and looking out over Lake Simcoe. The description is completely accurate. This is an historic building; when on the property you are completely unaware that there are modern houses close by. The silence is broken only but the sound of waves hitting the shoreline. Yesterday I had two visitors, one from Germany and one from La Jolla California. The German was charmed by the shabby chic elegance of the place, especilly the Great Room with its gorgeous traditional stone fireplace. The upstairs bedrooms are described in the listing as "small", but I would call them average for the era, and the antique furnishings give the place a wonderful feeling of Ontario's history. My California friend, however, was unfamiliar with what we mean in Ontario by a "cottage". Rowanlea is a perfect example: old construction, somewhat wonky floors, original windows that can be drafty when the wind blows hard off the lake. I think she was expecting something more along the lines of her suburban house. The cedar walls, antique woodburning stove, about two dozen windows on all four sides on the main floor alone, the deck and picnic platform above, the dock and another viewing platform next to the boathouse all add up to privacy and enjoyment even when there are a dozen people present. If you understand what a traditional Ontario cottage is, you will adore Rowanlea.
