About the property

"Stylish and Well designed Riad in a very good location ". ( Heidi, December 2017).

Hello and welcome to Dar Massaneh!

This large renovated house, close to the ancient Jewish Mellah of The Medina consists of 3 double bedrooms and a single, plus several living areas to ensure maximum relaxation.

There are 2 beautiful bathrooms (1 with bath 1 with shower) also decorated in the traditional 'tadelekt' plastering style as well as a fully fitted kitchen.

There is an extensive private roof terrace on 2 levels with panoramic views of the sea and over the ancient Medina, ideal for sunbathing, al fresco cooking on the traditional stove, general relaxation or yoga.

We can provide a spare bed matress for an extra (8th) guest if required and have a toddler's cot to accommodate the wee ones.

Housekeeping is included and home-cooking or babysitting can be arranged locally.

The house is located in a very pleasant and quiet residential side street in the Essaouira Medina. However it is close to main historical attractions and the beach as well as delightful restaurants and cafes close by.

The Dar is under new management and is also undergoing some changes which will provide our guests with an even more delightful experience.

Hi I'm Martine and welcome to my page.

I'm originally from Glasgow, Scotland but now based between London and Morocco. I'm a mature student studying Fashion, undertaking research projects in Morocco itself, although my background is Music and Media. Previously I lived in The Gambia, West Africa for 17 years, and have traveled world-wide over the course of the years. And finally I find myself in Essaouira which is now home. I named our beautiful house after my son Massaneh (pictured above during a recent trip to the Sahara).

MARTINE STONE purchased this townhome in 2015

Why MARTINE STONE chose Old Medina

I had visited other cities in Morocco which were also lovely but Essaouira is is so laid back and calm yet offers magnificent beaches. It was also vital as a single woman that I felt safe which I can assure any women travelers they will feel in Essaouira. I As soon as I viewed this property I bought it. It has a regal presence, due to the restoration yet feels airy and cosy at the same time. The terraces are a suntrap and you can see the sea on both sides of the bay from the upper terrace. Since taking over in December 2015 I am carrying out some 'extra touches', to add to that luxurious feeling the house already possesses.

What makes this townhome unique

A large airy traditional house with charm and yet mod cons. Situated in a convenient and 'trendy' part of the ancient Medina, with restaurants, artisan shops and cafes close by, but the house and terraces are peaceful. The beach is under 10 minutes walk away through interesting and historic streets. We have a Manager and housekeeper at hand who will take care of your requirements including travel and excursions.

Lovely house, extremely helpful

  • 4 of 5

Stayed for four days in Feb 2018.

A beautiful house in a central yet quiet and welcoming location, in the Jewish Quarter of Essaouira.

Sandra, the manager of the house, was extremely helpful with our requests (some firewood, a few extra lamps) and there was no problem with checkin/out. Spring for the 20Dhms to get someone to wheel your luggage from wherever you enter the Medina through town to the house.

Naima, the housekeeper, does a fabulous breakfast though it's kinda fun hunting for cooking supplies in Essaouira - you can buy virtually anything you need within 60 seconds walk of this house.

The house itself is well-decorated and generally well-supplied with kitchen utensils - including stuff like a juicer - essential in a country with great oranges! Typical of similar homes, there are a fair few stairs - fine with our 8 and 11yo but I'd be warier with much younger children. Main bedroom (with double b bed) shares a floor with eating area, the kitchen and one other single bedroom - other bedrooms are one or two floors above that. One bedroom is on the roof too - warm and properly enclosed but might not suit some. (We had no need to use).

Good terrace - though some extra or better furniture outside would make it better and might allow guests to make more use of the second terrace too. WiFi is 3G dongle supplied so can be frustratingly intermittent.

Overall, we really liked Dar Massaneh and would recommend if the room configuration suits and you're not dependent on WiFi within the home - wifi is available, of course, in almost every restaurant/cafe. Its lcoation was particularly appealing and it really felt like we were living in the hustle and bustle of Essaouira during our brief stay.

Thank you Martine, Sandra and Naima.

Fabulous ancient home with the stories of generations pouring out from the tiled floors, ceilings, and exceptionally beautiful lights and Windows. Amazing street with friendly neighbours inviting us for tea. The Medina is teeming with shops and great food. We laughed our way through a slip-slide Hammam. Said met us at the Carfour outside the Medina and is a gracious and attentive property manager. It was a wonderful way to spend Eid in Morocco.

Looking at the world

Through the sunset in your eyes

Trying to make the train

Through clear Moroccan skies

Ducks and pigs and chickens call

Animal carpet wall to wall

American ladies five foot tall in blue
