A beautifully crafted shore front cabin with views on three sides of local islands, the Mussel Ridge Channel and the open waters of west Penobscot Bay. Screened from other cottages, the cabin is a perfect romantic getaway for a couple or cozy seaside base for a small family. Spectacular sunrises and the glow of sunsets on the islands are complemented by starry nights and moonbeams dancing on the water. The waterfront provides abundant opportunities for beach combing, swimming, and boating. Two local undeveloped islands are within rowing and paddling distance. Enjoy the windjammers, sailboats, lobster boats and power cruisers traversing the bay on their way up and down the coast. Adjacent to the cabin is a grassy area with picnic table and lawn chairs suitable for cookouts, relaxing, and enjoying unencumbered views of the bay. Because the cabin is right on the shore, it relies on bottled water and a self contained Sun-Mar electric composting toilet . The owner supplies pure spring water for drinking, and cooking, and town water washing. This latter can also be used for solar heated bag showers in the shed immediately next to the cabin. Guests also have access to hot showers in the owners' nearby cottage.

Welcome from Peter and Marilyn Deraney, the proud owners of the cabin. We are long term summer residents of Beach Street for more than 50 years. Both retired teachers, we are delighted to spend extended time in this place we love and which has so many special memories for us. We look forward to sharing our knowledge and appreciation of the area with others. We are accessible when needed, but respectful of the privacy of our guests.
Why Owner chose Owls Head
Marilyn's parents first came to the MidCoast area to visit friends in 1938 and fell in love with the natural beauty of the coast. They returned each year with family, and purchased their own property on Beach Street in 1951. The MidCoast region and the undeveloped quality of Penobscot Bay provided both a retreat from the pressure of demanding careers and the opportunity to relax and engage in swimming, boating and fishing. Introduced to sailing at an early age, Peter and Marilyn found an ideal sailing ground in Penobscot Bay, with its many islands and quiet coves. At the same time, the area provides easy access to supplies, health services and rich cultural activities.
What makes this Cabin unique
We have long admired this cabin, both for its direct proximity to the shore and for the craftsmanship of the original owner, and more recently, the enhancements made by the previous owners. The cabin provides spectacular views of and access to the coastal islands and beaches, yet is effectively screened from other properties on Beach Street. It also provides a rare combination of a quiet shore front base and proximity to the diverse artistic, cultural and maritime activities of nearby Rockland, the major transportation hub of mid-coast Maine.

We had a brilliant stay
What a remarkable find this place is! We loved staying at this cozy cottage right on the sea. You look out the front windows and all you see is blue ocean; in fact it feels almost like you're on the prow of a ship looking out over the water. Peter and Marilyn have done a sublime job of making this little place feel like a home, and they couldn't have been more welcoming. We somehow felt like family coming for a visit even though we had only just met. We could have stayed for weeks, just exploring the beach during the day and listening to the waves at night. We can't wait to come back.
fantastic location, very pritty view
Lack of running water took less than a day to get used to. We had the occasional shower at the Y in Rockland. Very coesey and no light pollution so spent evenings looking at the milky way and shooting stars keeping warm with the fire basket and a glass of wine. Peter and Marilyn were lovely hosts.
Great Little Oceanfront Getaway
My boyfriend and I rented this cabin for a relaxing Fall getaway and had a wonderful time! The cabin is quaint, private and steps away from the water. Peter and Marilyn were very sweet hosts from the minute I decided to book. They were very responsive, helpful and friendly. Peter came to meet us when we arrived even though it was later than we expected. He gave us a quick tour of the cabin and then let us be. Though they live sort of behind the cabin, it still felt very private.
The cabin is very cozy and has mostly everything you would need and was clean and tidy. The kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils etc., and although there is no running water, they had plenty of jugs available for drinking and dish washing. There is no indoor shower, so keep that in mind especially if you are staying when it is cold out. There is one available at Peter and Marilyn's, but we did not use it during our stay. The composting toilet was completely fine and had no smell at all.
We loved the indoor wood burning stove (gave off tons of heat!) and enjoyed the fire pit and chairs outside. They views of the bay are great and the gentle waves/lobster boats passing by was quite relaxing. There is plenty to do in the nearby towns so one can do as much or as little as they would like! We went to the Owls Head Lighthouse, had lunch in Rockland (Home Kitchen=amazing tacos!), explored Camden and went to the top of Mt. Battie.
Overall, had a wonderful stay and would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a simple, relaxing oceanfront getaway!
Shhhh...this place is the best kept secret!!
We stayed 2 nights here and if we ever make it back to mid-coast Maine, we will definitely stay here again. I wished we had stayed longer. This little cabin is 5 minutes from Rockland, but yet you'll feel a hundred miles away. It is the perfect place to relax, unplug and do nothing! Marilyn and Peter are the perfect hosts. Thank you for sharing your slice of paradise with us!
Unplug and recharge
This little seaside cottage worked its magic for me...it's literally right on the rocky shore, and I fell asleep each night to the sound of the waves, and I awoke each morning to the sound of the loon (I had no idea loons were ocean birds, but Marilyn did; she left me 2 books about all the local birds!)
The interior of the cottage was spotless and reminded me of my childhood, with all its nautical charm, tiny wood stove, and strategically placed rocking chairs. I brought my cat with me, and she lounged in the windows overlooking the bay, and even ventured out with me to sit next to the fires that I built every night in the fire pit out in the yard.
Peter and Marilyn had warm blueberry muffins waiting for me upon my arrival...you don't want to pass those up! While both being very attentive to what I needed, they respected my privacy and were virtually invisible. I always had plenty of fresh water for drinking and cleaning up, and I used the shower in their home on several occasions. Their door was always open to me...the most kind and gracious couple that I have met in a very long time.
I walked the beach - Holiday Beach - every low tide, and I found plenty of treasures, including sand dollars, beach glass, and heart-shaped rocks.
The bed was comfy, the linens crisp and white, all the appliances worked. There was charcoal for the grill - I forgot how much better food tastes when cooked on charcoal! The composting toilet was efficient and clean - never an odor coming from it.
Since I visit Owl's Head frequently, I didn't do any exploring, but there is so much to do - the Transportation Museum, the State Park and lighthouse, all the great restaurants, shopping in Rockland, anything in Camden...you'd be hard-pressed to find a more quaint or charming cottage than this one. I can't wait to return :)
We had an incredible stay! Perfect weather and breath taking star lit nights by the fire at our cozy little cabin by the sea! Very easy to bike around and enjoy town, restaurants, the lighthouse, the scenery and to the local beach. We would highly recommend this little slice of heaven for a relaxing week(end) get a way for two...we will be back next year!
Away from the quiet of the cabin, the town of Owls Head offers several major attractions. A half mile beyond the Post Office is the entrance to Owls Head Light State Park with its spectacular view of the bay from the lighthouse. Owls Head offers two family friendly sandy beaches: Crescent Beach within walking distance and Birch Point State Park just beyond the airport. The Owls Head Transportation Museum houses a unique collection of antique automobiles and airplanes and sponsors annual air and auto shows.
