Recently restored 18th century luxury lakeside villa sleeping up to 12 guests
Why Emma Billingham chose Griante
I fell in love with Lake Como over 15 years ago on a family trip to Italy. I spent many years coming back and when the opportunity arose I decided to buy a property here, to save spending out on hotels every few weeks! Villa Lucia was such an opportunity - there is only a handful of property in the world with such a position and outlook, I felt extremely lucky to have found her. We made great friends of the previous owners who had lived at Lucia for over 20 years. She needed a lot of TLC and we spent a good 6 months restoring her and giving her back her sparkle. It is now a real comfortable home to spend time in. We decided to open her doors to everyone and share her with guests, as she is simply too beautiful to sit empty for the majority of the summer.

Spacious villa with fantastic lake view.
Perfect for our large group! Vittoria, the property manager, is very responsive and speaks excellent English. Easily walkable to restaurants and transit options. Good starting point for hikes into the hills and Villa Carlotta is short stroll away. Boat rental from Nautic Planet just down the street is a MUST! Only drawback is that it is right on the main road which can be quite noisy at night. Otherwise fantastic!
Hi Robert and Lucinda, we're delighted to hear about your time at the Lucia Estate! It was an absolute pleasure to have you and your guests stay at the villas. I have forwarded your kind words to Vittoria who advised what a warm and friendly group you were! That’s great news you were able to enjoy the walks in the mountains behind the villas and rent out a boat for the week – the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the place, for sure. We look forward to welcoming you to the Lucia Estate in the future. Ciao for now!
Big house to sleep 12 comfortably. No other highlight.
This villa is comfortable but I would never stay there again or recommend it to anyone. The big minuses are that there is no real garden, just one tiny terrace with a table and not even an umbrella to provide shade. The terrace and the house are right in front of a very busy road, so even though the view is amazing, this is not a peaceful place. And forget about taking calm walks.
The other major minus is the kitchen. I had seen some reviews mentioning this, but thought the owners would do something about it. For the price of the rental, the kitchen is very unpractical and terribly equipped.
Mariana, we were disappointed to read your review. In response, the images presented of the front lawn and terrace area show clearly the extent of the space available; it is unfortunate that you believed there was further gardens beyond this however there is no doubt that the outside space available can welcome 12 people very comfortably – 50 at our wedding in fact! We have taken note of your suggestion of an umbrella on the main table – this has now been done, thank you. In terms of the location, all properties enjoying prime, tier one views of the lake as Lucia does, are on the lake road enjoying the best views on offer. It’s unfortunate you were unable to appreciate a calm walk on the main lake road however the tranquil mountains roads can all be accessed within a minute of the house, and continue to be the source of the many positive reviews we receive from guests and one of the key highlights of the area. We have taken note of your comments regarding the kitchen and following our renovations over the winter, this will be reviewed and upgraded should we feel it necessary. However, whilst it was unfortunate we did not have a blender as you requested, I do not feel this constitutes a poorly equipped kitchen.
We enjoyed our stay at the Villa Lucia enormously. However, it is not entirely right to say it sleeps 12 people : we were with 9 persons (all adults) and the kitchen, especially the cooking plates, didn't enable us to cook for so many persons. It took hours to boil water just in order to make pasta !
The greatest advantage of this (beautiful) villa is its perfect situation with the marvellous view over Bellagio on the other side of the lake : for this reason I would recommend it, not for the comfort or the equipment of the villa, however beautiful it is.
Many thanks for your kind review, we love hearing our guests thoughts and any feedback they may have.
The villa is marketed as a 5 bedroom villa with the possibility if requested to sleep an additional 2 guests. There are 5 bedrooms, 4 of which offer double beds and the 5th bedroom offering twin beds. As many guests have small children, we provide a sofa bed in the study for guests to use if requested. Therefore, the rest of the villa is geared up to cater for 10 guests - so the kitchen utensils, dining seating etc. There should be 10 of everything required and will double check if there have been any breakages we are unaware of meaning there was less than expected. With regards to boiling water, there is a range of saucepans etc and a standard electric hob so unfortunately cannot speed this process up!
All guests agree that the view truly is magnificent and I am sure you enjoyed watching the boats pass back and for from Bellagio.
Villa Lucia sits on the western shore of Lake Como ideally located to reach all the major towns on the lake such as Bellagio, Menaggio, Tremezzo, Laglio (famed now as the home to George Clooney) and Como itself.
Just a short walk is the fabulous Lido di Cadenabbia with its swimming pool, bar & restaurant overlooking the lake. And 100m from the villa itself is the Cadenabbia ferry port which provides access to all major towns on the lake for both cars and passengers, with Tremezzo and Villa Carlotta ports also within walking distance.
Within walking distance there are various small shops, cafes and restaurants in the village of Cadenabbia and neighbouring Tremezzo, a small grocer who sells fresh bread, milk, fruit and veg and your daily conveniences is ideal during your stay. There is a much larger supermarket in nearby towns Lenno or Menaggio or Bennetts superstore in Como sells everything you need and more should you want to stock up at the beginning of your holiday.
There are some wonderful pavement cafes, restaurants and typical Italian bars a walk away from the villa to cater for breakfast, lunch and dinner and anything in between! A must is dinner at our favourite - Al Veluu Restaurant which is said to be one of the best restaurants in Europe and a favourite with many of the rich and famous!
There is an endless list of places to visit when on Lake Como, our favourites include the beautiful botanical gardens of Villa Carlotta just a short walk from Villa Lucia and is said to have over 500 species of plants and flowers. The bustling town of Bellagio is directly opposite the villa and is a short 10 minute ferry ride away (said to be one of the most beautiful towns in Europe) and where you can enjoy a gelato from one of the many stalls. There is also the beautiful Villa Melzi, Villa Serbelloni and the world famous Villa di Balbianello, all within half an hour access from the villa.
Wine tasting is of course a necessity in the local Cantina Follie in Tremezzo and they offer all Lucia guests a special rate. Sailing and wonderful boat excursions around the lake are also a great way to explore.
Golf: Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Course again offers our guests a special package rate and is located nearby as is said to marvel the best of golf players. This fantastic 18 hole, 5442m, par 70 course is one of the most ancient golf courses in Europe, with steep inclines, sweeping fairways and spectacular views en route. Open from March to November, is certainly one to add to your list.
The world famous Villa D'Este also offers an 18 hole course and is said to be the most varied and difficult of the European par 69 courses, along with one of the most magnificent viewpoints on Lake Como itself.
