Overview

About the property

Rural but only 5-10 minutes short walk to town center

Nestled in the Pines, a five minute stroll to downtown Twain Harte, this charming 100+ year-old rustic cabin offers the perfect place to simply relax or plan one of many activities available. With its English cottage style furnishings, prime location and modern amenities, this cabin provides room to build lasting memories.

The bright and spacious living room offers comfortable seating where you can watch movies (on the internet-connected TV, no cable), play games or simply relax with a book in the cozy bay window.

The country kitchen has a rustic pine table seating 8 and is fully equipped.

Both main bedrooms are furnished with comfy Queen size beds. There's also an adorable loft with two single beds. A favorite with kids!

The sunny front deck nestled amongst tall pines is equipped with a barbeque, a fireplace table and comfortable seating. It's the perfect spot for entertaining or simply putting your feet up.

The private backyard has a dining table with 6 chairs in the shade of a centuries-old oak tree.

During the warmer weather, activities such as swimming, floating carelessly on a raft, hiking 'The Rock' or simply enjoying digging your toes in the sand are all possible at the Twain Harte Lake. (YOU HAVE LAKE PRIVILEGES.)

If you prefer to stay dry, you can enjoy a fabulous round of golf at the Twain Harte public golf course or use the public tennis courts. One of our family favorites is the pee-wee 9-hole course for the less experienced golfer.

If shopping is your sport there are several stores just a few minutes walk from the cabin. During the summer, the town offers free concerts and movie nights in the park on the weekends.

During the cold season, activities such as skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed at Dodge Ridge Ski Resort only 10 miles away. If you prefer ice skating the Long Barn rink is just up the road. Our family has many fond memories of sledding and tubing in the Pinecrest and Strawberry snowparks.

For those who prefer indoor activities, Black Oak Casino offers good food and fun for the whole family, or simply enjoy the cabin with its fireplace and well equipped library.

This cabin is the perfect starting point to many destinations such as:

- Twain Harte Lake (1mile)

- Dodge Ridge Ski Resort (10 miles)

- Pinecrest Lake (10 miles)

- Strawberry (15 miles)

- Explore gold country in the town of Columbia (17 miles)

- Yosemite (85 miles)

- Mountain Wineries

- Black Oak Casino (6 miles)

- Moaning Caverns (25 miles)

- Sonora (12 miles)

One absolute highlight is that the cabin is about 5 minutes walk from arguably the best sports bar and family restaurant in Tuolumne County. Draft beer, burgers, salads, desserts -- the food is great (and you don't have to drive back)!

About Frances West

Our hectic family life in Silicon Valley made choosing a vacation home where we could get together and build precious memories extremely important.

Frances West purchased this cabin in 1994

Why Frances West chose Twain Harte

Rather than a second home we wanted a cozy rustic cabin and we fell in love with this one! It's one of the first two properties ever built in Twain Harte, yet it comes with modern conveniences and comfort.

What makes this cabin unique

Its perfect location in the heart of Twain Harte and the beautiful surrounding trees make this cabin a gem! "The Rock" is a winner!

Notes:
This cabin is in the Sierra Foothills in the "Mother Lode" area where gold was discovered in California in 1849. We recommend you visit Columbia (a historic town from the gold rush era, about 30-45 minutes drive away). Also recommended, especially on hot days, is to go gold panning in Woods Creek -- visit "Gold Prospecting Adventures" in Jamestown. Another highly-recommended favorite is the National Hotel in Jamestown - historic bar and restaurant with great food and friendly service.

Fantastic, relaxing spot for a Bay Area getaway!

  • 4 of 5

We had a great week-long stay that included daily visits to Twain Harte lake. It's an easy stroll into the charming hamlet of Twain Harte for a few rounds of mini-golf. The cabin is well-appointed, with a large and fully stocked kitchen. They even had an electric griddle for my daughter's morning staple: buttermilk pancakes. It's a short drive to the very well-stocked Twain Harte market. Non-lake hours were spent lounging in the comfy living room, reading, watching tv (no cable or satellite, but a great DVD collection), or just napping from being in the sun all day. Washer and dryer made it very easy to wash and dry swim towels and our clothing. The cabin is surrounded by lots of trees and natural beauty with two awesome spots to sit outside and eat or enjoy your morning coffee. The front deck has a gas-fired fire pit that makes for pleasant evenings to sit sipping wine or a cocktail while chatting or just gazing at the multitude of stars visible. The back area has a table and chairs for al fresco dining.

We were only 3 people, but the house can easily accommodate more (up to 8). VRBO and the owner we're great to work with. Strong communication thru the planning and up to the beginning of our stay answered all our questions about the cabin and what to expect when we visited the lake. If you want a relaxing and easy trip to gold country, this is a great spot!we are already planning and plotting our visit for next summer.

This is a unique property that needs some TLC and some owner responsibility

  • 2 of 5

We entered our VRBO cabin in Twain Harte and found it all closed up and the thermostat registered 94 degrees. The instruction notebook left by the owner directed us to the thermostat -- a Nest, with which I was familiar-- and we turned on the air conditioner. The Nest told us we would reach a temperature of 72 in 2 1/2 hours. After an hour we realized that only room temperature air (94) was being circulated and we called the owner to report it: no answer after 2 tries. We called the property manager, left a message and went out to dinner. Though we had brought groceries there was no way we could cook.

The property manager called back and was frustrated that we had not been told that the a/c was broken-- and scheduled to be replaced on July 18th -- this was July 9th. " you are the second group who arrived without being notified of the broken air conditioner !" He told us where to find the key to a small efficiency cabin with a wall unit on the property -- not what we had signed up for but at least it cooled off so we could sleep.

I called the owner every day with no answer. Her number in the instruction notebook was answered by someone who replied "NO!" When I asked for Frances. She never answered the phone link from the VRBO site though I left numerous messages.

We could spend no time inside the property except in the early morning. We ate our take out meals on the picnic table in the back yard in the evening. At one time this property was a gem, but the recent loss of trees and lack of air conditioning made our stay barely bearable and we would like some compensation from the owner. If we had been told of the problem we could have found another place where we could have saved money by preparing meals at home rather than having to eat out or get take out.

Unless the owner pays some attention to her property and her renters I would not recommend this vacation rental.

Beautiful Setting

  • 3 of 5

We are having a difficult time reviewing this cabin because we can say it is a wonderful place, but at the same time there are some things which are not so good.

The cabin has a beautiful setting meaning it is very private with beautiful trees and great places to sit outside. The cabin itself is comfortable especially for a group. The AC was not working when we got there, but it was up and running within 24 hours which was much appreciated. We love swimming in Twain Harte lake which now costs $6/per person per day.

There is no TV reception so the TV is only usable for watching videos from the owner's library, which is considerable. The cabin definitely needs updating with older beds, furniture and no dishwasher available now. The hot tub and pool were not usable. Also the amount of supplies such as soap, paper products etc. were limited and we had not brought much with us.

We have stayed at many VRBO houses/cabins around the country and I have to say this one was disappointing.

Basic amenities

  • 3 of 5

Overall, this cabin served its purpose. Upon arrival, we made the beds using the sheets that were provided. We were a bit disappointed to see hairs on the sheets, so we decided to wash all the sheets before making the beds again. Even after washing the sheets, we still found hairs on the sheets, so it may have just been an issue with the dryer. After making the beds twice, I decided to go for a walk with the kids. However, this was a bit scary in the winter, as there is no sidewalk, and cars drove pretty quickly around the turns. It's very easy to get to Dodge Ridge from the cabin, so that was nice. There is a TV, but no TV reception. There are lots of movies (DVD and VHS) to watch.
