About Michele Palatas

I moved to Alaska from Los Angeles in 1998 to work in the Arctic. Deadhorse, Alaska on the edge of the Beaufort Sea was my base of operations for four and a half years. WesternGeco, the company I worked for then sent me down on the Kenai peninsula for six months, where I lived in a cabin on the Moose River in Sterling. Then I decided it was time to buy a house in Anchorage. I purchased a duplex and turned half into a fully furnished GuestHouse where I now live with my Rotti-Lab mix, Quinn. I enjoy meeting people from around the world who frequent the GuestHouse. I also have a dog-walking business, Bubba's Dog Walking.

Michele Palatas purchased this house in 2002

Why Michele Palatas chose Anchorage

Anchorage is a great base for exploring the wild wonderful place called Alaska! It is a gorgeous drive south on the Seward Highway heading down to Girdwood, Seward, Homer, Hope, Coopers Landing and places in between on the Kenai Peninsula. There is much to see and much to do, especially in the great outdoors! Anchorage offers great restaurants, shopping, museums, citywide trails for biking, hiking, skiing....mountains for snowboarding, downhill, snowmachining and dogsledding........heading north to Denali, Fairbanks, the arctic brings unimaginable wonders to see and experience!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Michele, You are a "gem" of a hostess with your welcoming personality, ...initially with communications before our trip here to Duben Place, with all of your pretty flowers; I've never seen such tall delphiniums in my life! We enjoyed all of the info you provided for traveling, after which it was a delight to come 'home', cozy and quiet, and with your interesting Native tribal art.

We appreciated being able to use some kitchen items , like olive oil and plastic wrap and not having to buy all of these, etc. Using our computer with your Wi-Fi connection was very helpful also.

Three fun tours were: 1) Whittier Blackstone Bay boat tour from Major Marine Tours-Beautiful! 2) Denali natural history bus tour, 3) Seward Resurrection Bay boat tour with Major Marine Tours - saw sea lions, sea otters, harbor seals and one whale that surfaced (just for us) five times!

We enjoyed many walks/hikes such as 1) Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, 2) along Ship Creek,... many were fishing, 3) Campbell Creek greenbelt's surprise was our seeing several sockeye salmon! 4) Kincaid Park......., 5) University Lake had lots of dogs off-leash with owners, all exercising. 6) Eagle River Nature Center, 7) We saw four moose in different places; 8) Thunderbird Falls from car to falls is just one mile.

We also enjoyed: 1) the Aurora Borealis show at the Center for Performing Arts, shows the best of thirty years - absolutely spectacular! 2) The Alaska Native Medical Center is free and has many displays of native art; 3) the float planes taking off and landing at Lake Hood were interesting; 4) Anchorage Museum was big so we did just the Native exhibits with old artifacts from the Smithsonian. There are many other things that we liked......Your home is conveniently located and that made our stay more enjoyable too.

Great location & accomdtns & excellent hostess!

  • 5 of 5

The location of this house rental was minutes from the full marathon start line...which was perfect! We enjoyed the accomodations thoroughly...fresh coffee, laundry facility and gracious hostess who helped us with figuring out how to use the DVD player! This is the ideal way to travel to Alaska since the prices can be extreme. It was very neat and clean when we arrived. We highly recommend it!

Great kitchen, lovely art, convenient location.

  • 5 of 5

My little party had a fine stay at Duben Place. There was plenty of room for the three of us, close groceries and other services and a well stocked kitchen that helped save $ on restaurants. Our meeting with Michele was delightful, and her recommendations were right on.

It was a very nice place to stay. Quiet and private most of the time.

  • 4 of 5

I loved the place and Michelle was a very gracious host. I would recommend it to anyone. It was unfortunate though that she had some remodeling going on while we were there (no heat or hot water for day and night). Other than that it was wonderful.

Owner's Response: I know...I do apologize for that! and would you believe the deck is still not built! I had to fire that guy and find a new builder! But there is plenty of hot water and heat, although we have been in the 60's and 70's so no heat needed! Thank you again for your stay and your kind and generous review. Warm regards, Michele.

Delightful Stay at the Duben Place

  • 5 of 5

Michele's place is absolutely perfect. It is exactly as described. Has two fenced private yards that worked very well for our dog, Titan. The kitchen is well stocked, the beds very comfortable. The place is cozy, clean, and has every thing you could need. We were staying in anchorage because my baby granddaughter was in the NICU, so we were pretty close to the hospital. Michele's place was a haven to come home to. Easy to find and had off street parking. Michele is an exceptional host and was extremely accommodating to our families needs.

Cozy, welcoming, well-equipped property

  • 5 of 5

We rented this for a stay over Christmas as my mom's house was overflowing. Opened the door after a long, late flight up to Anchorage and were greeted by a Christmas tree, poinsettia, and candles - and cherry white chocolate bread for breakfast in the morning. What a warm welcome! Michelle was welcoming as well. The kitchen was well equipped with kitchen tools and food basics - I could have cooked a full dinner easily. The bedrooms were cozy and the beds comfortable. We needed to do some work over Christmas and found the Wifi worked well. There were books, puzzles, movies for down time and a list of suggestions for things to see and places to eat. Thoughtful touches like reusable bags in the entry way and hand mirrors in the bathroom were appreciated. We had snow, and the walks were shoveled before we woke up in the morning. Overall it was a wonderful, comfortable stay. I would happily stay here again.

Clean, Quiet and Perfect Oasis

  • 5 of 5

This home is immaculately maintained. Michele, your host, is easy to reach and went over and above with every detail. We arrived a day late due to our cancelled flights and she made sure our arrival was warm and welcoming. The house was warm, candles lit and she even made sure we had a snack waiting for us. Her dog friendly home even included dog bowls and treats! Laundry room was a huge plus! Kitchen is well stocked with spices and cooking necessities. Choices of coffee and tea were great too. The bathroom was clean and large, and the bedroom had the most comfortable bed that felt like a cloud to sleep on! Private, fenced yard that was easy for letting our dog out to run around. We have stayed at VRBO's for more than 15yrs and across the country and internationally and have never felt so welcome anywhere. Thank you for the love and affection you gave to our little MinPin, i knew that he was in good hands with you and Quinn! I loved meeting your dog, he is beautiful and so gentle, even with our little 10lb bundle of joy :) )

Thank you Michele, and we look forward to seeing you again! (There is also a dog walking/sitting service nearby and the contact information is on the fridge for your convenience!!)
