South Shore House is a charming (2600 sq ft) farm house situated in the heart of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. With over 100 feet of private frontage on Little Traverse Lake, our house is perfect for both children and adults. The lake stays shallow for awhile, and deepens for swimming, fishing, and kayaking further out. The beach area has a fire pit, outdoor chaise lounge chairs, dock, and hammock under the fragrant pines. There is a large grassy area, ideal for volleyball, croquet, and other activities. The quiet lake has different aspects with much to discover including beautiful sunset views and shooting stars.

Our home is well-appointed and very family-friendly - room enough for several couples, or two families, or an extended family. There is plenty of room for everyone to cook and eat together, find spaces to nap, read a book, play games, listen to music, or just take in the beautiful surroundings. There are five bedrooms, three full baths, a laundry room, open floor plan, cable TV, high speed broadband wireless, fully equipped kitchen, large deck, and a gas grill.

The Master Suite on the main floor is spacious, with a queen-sized four poster bed, private bath with Jacuzzi tub, walk-in closet, and sitting area. [sleeps 2]

The Mission Room has mission-style furniture, including a queen-sized bed, rocker, dresser, with beautiful views of the lake. [sleeps 2]

The Library has built in shelves loaded with books and games, closet, dresser, and a queen-size bed. [sleeps 2]

The Bunk Room has a single bed, and a bunk bed with a single mattress on top and double on the bottom. The bottom bunk can be used as a sofa or bed. [sleeps 2-4]

The Lookout Room is the perfect place for one. Equipped with a single bed, wardrobe and dressing table…and a lovely view of the lake. [sleeps 1]

The upstairs rooms share a hallway bathroom. There is a third full bathroom downstairs off the lake entryway, laundry room, kitchen area.

South Shore House is a stone's throw (50 yards) from Market 22 (deli, cafe, convenience store, market) and The Ugly Tomato (luscious heirloom tomatoes and local produce from a fifth-generation Leelanau farmer). We are surrounded by over 70,000 acres of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore offering some of the most pristine views in the world.

About Michael Lachance

Michael and Laurie both work for the University of Michigan, live in Ann Arbor, and have been coming 'up north' for years. They and their two sons have rented cottages over the decades on many of the inland lakes in the the Sleeping Bear dunes area, and have fallen in love with Little Traverse Lake.

Michael Lachance purchased this house in 2012

Why Michael Lachance chose Maple City

This place has it all! Perched on a beautiful inland lake, with easy access--by foot, bike, or car--to Good Harbor and the Lake Michigan shoreline.

What makes this house unique

We have found in all of our travels that the rolling hills, boundless lake shore, uncrowded sandy beaches, vineyards, orchards, fresh local food and charming villages of the Leelanau Peninsula are unparalleled.

This is a gem

  • 5 of 5

We spent another amazing week at the South Shore House and Little Traverse Lake. It worked out very well for our extended family of 9, and there were still some beds to spare. Consider it for a Fall wine-tasting or biking week with couples or a wedding gathering spot. This is a large tastefully decorated house with a great well-supplied kitchen, a house which easily holds three families for dining, playing, relaxing, and sleeping. It's very close to a small supermarket and pizza/sandwich wine shop, and an easy drive or walk to an Irish pub. The water is shallow and clear. The Heritage Biking Trail and pristine beach on Lake Michigan can be reached easily. While it's on a major road, that street is not within easy reach of little kids. Mike is very easy to work with, and is flexible within reason.

Enjoyed every bit of this wonderful home. Well appointed kitchen with lots of space made meal prep a breeze. Comforts such as fans, games, and beach toys met the needs of everyone in our family. Looking forward to returning next year!

Wonderful house in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the South Shore house with our children and grandchildren. It was perfect for the 6 adults and 3 young children in our group. Positives included:

* Lots of space for everyone to spread out and enjoy a range of activities

* A well equipped kitchen and cupboards so we could find anything we needed for cooking, cleaning up, first aid, laundry, etc.

* Wonderful outdoor space including a great beach area, lots of "toys" for adults and kids and plenty of chairs for relaxing

* Perfect location close to Glen Arbor, Leland, Traverse City and the Dunes as well as the entire Leelanau peninsula.

* Beautiful lake for boating and swimming as well as enjoying the sunset.

* Responsive host who quickly addressed our questions and provided good information about the home and the area

* M22 across the street had wonderful pizza and salads at a great price. We also enjoyed a delicious nicer dinner at the Little Traverse Inn up the road from the house.

The only very minor drawback was that the house is on a busier street, so could hear road noise as we were trying to relax.

We would definitely return to this house and location and recommend it as a great place to stay.

Hands down, one of the best homes yet!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our vacation with this rental home and it was one of the best we've ever stayed in! Very clean, organized, everything you could need in the kitchen - I think it was more well-equipped than ours at home!! The kids loved all the outdoor amenities - kayaks, canoe, row boat, volleyball, and on and on! Beds were comfortable, area was quiet and was perfect spot for so many locations we love visiting. The owner was fantastic to work with from beginning to end, always quick to respond and very helpful with any questions. Loved it and would definitely recommend, no question! Already trying to see if we can make a return trip next year!

Simply Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Our family has been staying at The South Shore House for several years now. Like wine, it gets better each year. We love the beautiful lake and long dock with the chairs at sunset and sunrise. We have enjoyed countless evenings by the fire on the beach roasting marshmallows while our children play with the giant jenga and dig for hours in the sand. We kayak and discover new parts of the lake each visit. The house is so well stocked with spices and cooking oils and baking pans we love making big family meals to enjoy on the deck. The M22 market across the street has the best pizza in town . Mike and Laurie have just about everything you could ask for, beach towels, beach chairs, kayaks, row boat, laundry necessities, shampoo and much more. The location is just perfect btw Glen Arbor and Leland and a stones throw from Good Harbor Beach. It is a great home full of special touches!

We had an absolutely wonderful time - the house has everything we could think of needing and more (!), in terms of both amenities for the house itself and plenty of gear for keeping all of us (adults and little kids) entertained outside. And then of course it's in a spectacular location with plenty of things to do in the surrounding area.
