South Shore House is a charming (2600 sq ft) farm house situated in the heart of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. With over 100 feet of private frontage on Little Traverse Lake, our house is perfect for both children and adults. The lake stays shallow for awhile, and deepens for swimming, fishing, and kayaking further out. The beach area has a fire pit, outdoor chaise lounge chairs, dock, and hammock under the fragrant pines. There is a large grassy area, ideal for volleyball, croquet, and other activities. The quiet lake has different aspects with much to discover including beautiful sunset views and shooting stars.

Our home is well-appointed and very family-friendly - room enough for several couples, or two families, or an extended family. There is plenty of room for everyone to cook and eat together, find spaces to nap, read a book, play games, listen to music, or just take in the beautiful surroundings. There are five bedrooms, three full baths, a laundry room, open floor plan, cable TV, high speed broadband wireless, fully equipped kitchen, large deck, and a gas grill.

The Lookout Room is the perfect place for one. Equipped with a single bed, wardrobe and dressing table…and a lovely view of the lake. [sleeps 1]

The upstairs rooms share a hallway bathroom. There is a third full bathroom downstairs off the lake entryway, laundry room, kitchen area.

South Shore House is a stone's throw (50 yards) from Market 22 (deli, cafe, convenience store, market) and The Ugly Tomato (luscious heirloom tomatoes and local produce from a fifth-generation Leelanau farmer). We are surrounded by over 70,000 acres of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore offering some of the most pristine views in the world.

Pure Michigan, pure joy

  • 5 of 5

Driving home after spending a week here and already talking about a return visit. We've rented many properties and this one ranks at the top. They've thought of everything and it was nice to have lots of extras.....paper towels, laundry and dish detergent, linens, etc. We took full advantage of the kayaks, canoe and row boat, played games in the yard all week and had fires every evening by the lake. The lake is beautiful and the evening sky and the view is gorgeous. Put down your laptop, IPhone and iPad and take advantage of lake life.

South Shore House

  • 5 of 5

My family of 10 - ages 13 to 83 really enjoyed our week in this lovely farm house. Everything advertised was even better than it said. Over the years we have stayed at 10 different houses in Michigan and Wisconsin and this kitchen was by far the best. Plenty of dishes, silverware, glasses, etc. and all types of pans and cookware. Even an espresso coffee machine which my 22 and 20 year-old granddaughters LOVED.

My son and son-in-law loved the kayaks and all the kids played basketball, badmitton, croquet, etc. in the large yard. The lake was so clean and the water-skiing, jet-skiing, and swimming were super.

The house itself was very clean and well-appointed with all you could possibly need. I loved my little dressing table (perfect for my lap-top) in the single bed room.

Of course the location is one of the best in Michigan. The kids loved running down the nearby dunes and then swimming in Lake Michigan. Also spent time in Leland, Fishtown, and Traverse City.

All in all a wonderful home to spend a week in with such an accommodating host. I highly recommend South Shore House.

South Shore House

We could not have found a better place to stay for a mini family reunion - and the addition of all the little things made the trip so much easier. I've rented many places through VRBO but few have looked after the additional amenities as well. The extra linens, laundry soap, hand soap, full kitchen compliments and lake/yard accessories were perfect. The lake and beach is shallow well past the dock so it was great for young children to safely explore and for those just learning to swim. The lawn furniture, games and kayaks kept the whole crew ages 4 - 70 busy for the week, in fact we didn't turn the TV on until the last night and smartphones and tablets were more dormant than I've ever seen. That was quite an accomplishment. We'll be in contact to rent this property for our next trip to MI.

Maple City MI

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for my family (which includes 4 young boys) and I. The house was clean with plenty of room for all. We took advantage of the rowboat for a nice cruise on Little Traverse Lake with access right in the back yard. Plenty of wood was available for the fireplace in the living room. The house has a large kitchen area with everything we needed to prepare our Thanksgiving dinner. The large jetted hot tub in the master bathroom was great to get all the boys cleaned up at night. For us, the location is ideal nestled next to Sleeping Bear Dunes national shoreline for lots of outdoor activities and close to Traverse City fine dining options and more. We were most impressed with the service and frequent communication that Michael gave. Looking forward to a return trip in the future.

Pure Enjoyment

  • 5 of 5

First, I can't say enough about Michael's attentiveness and kindness. My family and I were supposed to visit the prior year but had to postpone. Michael was immediately understanding and caring about the situation and worked with us to make sure we would have a week held for the following summer. We were thrilled when we finally arrived at South Shore House, and we already plan to return. We love the way the house has been updated without losing the rustic farmhouse feel. When I was "warned" all we'd need to take was some clothes and maybe a 1st day's worth of food, he wasn't kidding! The owners truly thought of everything someone might need for a pleasant, easy stay; right down to providing allergy-free laundy detergent for someone in our party who has sensitivities. The location is convenient to the many little towns (or larger Traverse City) and things to do in the area, as well as to Lake Michigan itself. Little Traverse Lake is perfect. You really can touch and see the bottom for quite a ways out. We enjoyed the kayaks and playing badminton in particular. All in all a wonderful experience and a very pleasant place to stay.

Excellent stay

  • 5 of 5

Lovely home which accommodated our family nicely. Perfectly situated close to Glen Arbor and Leland. The large yard and sandy beach front was well used. The lake is very shallow and crystal clear just perfect for my grandchildren. We made good use of the kayaks, firepit and badmitton equipment. The kitchen was well equipped and dishwasher is always a bonus. Very comfortable furnishings - we felt right at home. There are many great attractions very close by. We all especially enjoyed the night sky. There was an endless number of stars in the sky which beautifully reflected off the placid lake. We made an excellent choice for our first family vacation!
