The West Country / Dorset region

Dorset's attractions are the mild climate, golden sandy beaches, beautiful coastline and countryside. It's weather is favourable, Dorset having amongst the most sunshine hours per year in the UK.

There are the dramatic ruins of Corfe Castle (National Trust), the Swanage Steam Railway, the long sandy beaches of Studland and the fascinating Sandbanks Chain Ferry (single car crossing approx £3) within a short distance. Treat yourself to tea at The Haven Hotel with its consevatory overlooking the entrance to Poole Harbour and the chain ferry.

Spend some time on the beaches of Sandbanks Peninsula, Poole, famous for having some of the most expensive properties in the world. Drop into Jazzy's Cafe (Shore Road) on a Sunday morning and read the papers and people-watch. Harriet's Restaurant (Lilliput, Poole) can be for a special occasion. See the Fireworks Display Thursdays 10pm at Poole Quay.

For those interested in watersports, there is windsurfing tuition available at Whitley Bay, Sandbanks; sailing tuition at Rockley Watersports, Hamworthy, Poole; scuba diving off Swanage and sea fishing trips from Poole Harbour.

Water-skiing, wakeboarding and parasurfing also take place in Poole harbour. Mountain biking is a popular activity in the nearby Purbeck Hills.

Thomas Hardy based his many novels, eg The Mayor of Casterbridge, in Wessex - the Dorset countryside. An interesting read before bedtime!

Great place to stay with friends

  • 3 of 5

Rented the property over New Year to celebrate with friends. The welcome hamper with 2 bottles of champagne was a nice touch. The bedrooms and bathrooms were all very clean and comfortably slept 8 adults, 7 children ( and the dog). We rented the beach hut which we made full use of - a easy walk from the property to the beautiful Sandbanks beach. The kitchen ( if a little dated) was well equipped. Would definitely recommend.

Stayed at this lovely house for a long weekend. There were 12 adults and 2 dogs. Had a wonderful stay. House has everything you need and home from home. Clean, more than adequate and very close to the beach. Will definitely return and recommend to others.

A Great Weekend

  • 4 of 5

This property was excellent for our extended family weekend we were six adults and four children. The description of this spacious property was good and it was very clean and well equipped, with many very thoughtful additional touches, ie wine, biscuits, milk and even flowers. Easy walking distance to the beach meant we were mostly there, but when not, there was plenty of space in the garden and house for the children to play. The off street parking was a real bonus as we had three cars - even more could have been accommodated. The owner sent out very clear instructions and provided a very informative information book at the house. He was always available by phone or email and answered any queries we had in a very friendly and helpful way. We would definitely recommend this property to friends and would make it our number one choice if the family returned to Sandbanks.

excellent holiday house

  • 4 of 5

Good clean well maintained property only a short walk from a very good beach. Everything provided and included a welcome hamper and flowers (nice touch) - information on travel distances, local shops and restaurants and other attractions provided. Swing and slide in private garden was a great hit with little ones. Listing accurate and would recommend highly.

Relaxing long weekend stay

  • 5 of 5

Four of us and a dog were looking for a last minute break, we opted to rent the beach hut as well, and were so pleased that we chose this property. It is well equipped, great parking, great bedrooms, bathrooms, and dining facilities. Booking was made easy and damage deposit was returned less than a week after our return.
