Had a little trouble finding the cabin but once we found it we quickly had favorable impressions with the cabin itself and with the view. We enjoyed our time there and would not hesitate to book it again if we came with a large group, as we did this time. Overall, we all had a very favorable impression and a wonderful time. Thanks!
Gorgeous view of the hills
The first night we arrived it was snowing really good and the road going up past Terry Peaks 1st parking lot was slick and so one of the trucks with the snowmobile trailer slid in the ditch we were not familiar with the area and it was dark but managed to find our way down to the parking lot and left our trailers there. We found the cabin and there was no way 3 of the trucks w/ trailers were going to fit in the driveway. The next morning we saw a place we could have unhooked and so we did that evening after snowmobiling. The house was nice sized, the kitchen was fully equipped and had a huge grill. Beds were comfortable rooms were nice sized. Gorgeous view off the deck. Shortage of towels so washed a load or 2 each day. Basement was freezing that first night for the kids. The baseboard heaters looked unsafe with burn spots and paint peeling off them. Day 1/2 later it was finally comfortably warm down there. Hot tub was a hit. Was very relaxing sitting by the wood fireplace. A bag of salt by the back door would be a nice idea as when the snow was melting off the roof of the deck it got very icy walking off the deck to the gravel to the truck so had to be careful no one fell. I Fell last year and had a concussion for a week and a bump the size of grapefruit on the back of my head and a large medical bill so extra careful when it comes to ice. Make sure one brings enough toilet paper as well. As supply is very limited. Otherwise the house is very cozy and pretty!
Beautiful house and location but not a great road getting in to house.
This was a beautiful house in a private location with great views. Now having said that when they say you need a 4 wheel drive to get in and out of this place they mean it. The house is at the bottom of a steep hill with an unpaved road. It snowed about 5 inch while we were there. While it was snowing we couldn't get out with our 4 wheel drive SUV so gave up deciding we weren't going anywhere that night. And then the next day they plowed the road at 7am and we still had a heck of a time getting out. Driving a dually 4 wheel drive truck pulling a trailer with 3 snowmobiles was not good. We had to back down the hill after the first attempt failed and get a run for it and then barely got to the top. Almost had to chain up. Not the best place if you have a trailer. The VRBO agent was awesome and answered my concerns right away and tried to find solutions to our issues we had. Having said that here was why I gave this the rating I did. The house was 55 degrees when we got there and after turning the heat up it got to a balmy 62! HA! Started a fire with a log that was inside but I the wood box outside on the porch was empty and the rest of the wood was wet under the trees. Had to use our paper plates and had to go pick pine cones for kindaling. Turns out the furnace was broken. Upstairs and basement had electric heat but people sleeping on main level slept in their coats! They jimmy rigged the furnace the next day to get it going which worked but Extra blankets would've been nice. The fooseball table was broken and I mean destroyed! Apparently they have a new one ordered? The WiFi didn't work despite our efforts to get it to. PlayStation didn't work either. Which would've been nice for the kids. There was a fire alarm that kept chirping, thank god they had extra batteries but didn't expect to have to go on a scavenger hunt to find which one it was. There was no laundry soap so a lot of good it was to have the washer and dryer. Didn't think I needed to bring that too! Good side was hot tub was awesome, Direct TV worked great on main level but got less channels downstairs? house is big enough for a huge family with plenty of sleeping space, eating space and hang out space. I love all the windows and the view. Great place to play in the snow with the kids. We brought our sleds and the location was great for that. It's at the end of the road like I said so it was private.
Nice Rental and large enough for the whole family!
I recommend staying at Royal Straight. We vacationed with our extended family of 17. We had a bit of trouble finding the place, but once we found it we enjoyed our stay. It was comfortable and had enough space. We used the kitchen (nicely stocked with essential cooking equipment) for meals. The hot tub was a nice bonus after our long hikes. We really enjoyed the view and deck. The mild weather and lack of bugs allowed us to turn off the AC and leave the doors open to the cool breeze. There were a few light bulbs out (but plenty working so it didn't make a difference) and they didn't mention they only provided 12 bath towels. BUT they did provide extra towels for the hot tub, so we were washing towels many days, so were happy to have the washer and dryer.
The trip to Custer is about 1 and a half hours (don't miss Sylvan Lake!!), so it was a bit of a jaunt to do a couple days. We drove Spearfish Canyon and hiked the Roughlock Falls and Devil's Bathtub (not too far away). We also enjoyed Lead's Black Hill's Mining Museum (less than 10 miles away) and Andy's Trail Rides (less than 5). Deadwood is close for good eats at Mavericks and a shoot out re-enactment and gambling.
Thanks so much for staying at Royal Straight Cabin! We're sorry we didn't have enough towels out for your stay. I'm not sure how it got overlooked but we'll make sure we put more out next time. Come back soon!
Sturgis is 22 miles away so it's close but out of the crowds when you want to relax. There are quite a few golf courses right around the area (new one in Spearfish) and so much sight-seeing and stuff to do outdoors within 10-15 minutes of this home! Deadwood, Spearfish, 4 wheeling, snowmobiling, hiking, lakes, gambling, caves...too much to list!
