Overview

About the property

three bedroom, two bathroom, and a walk to the harbor and downtow

When you come to my house I want you to feel , well, happy! Its a modest home, built in 1903 by the city's first optometrist. There is a nice design to the place, high ceilings , carpenter's details and handpainted decorative walls. I'm always working to improve the gardens. There's a big tree that shades the house in the summer. The yard is fenced and hedged. It's nice and simple..

There's a barn in the back which has my yard tools and a studio.

About Debby Atwell

The owner, Debby Atwell is an author and illustrator of children's books. Now retired, she is studying mindfulness meditation and can tell you with places in town to do yoga and to meditate.

Debby Atwell purchased this house in 87

Why Debby Atwell chose Mid-Coast & Islands

My house will surprise you in a good way... I bought the house thirty years ago and have been working on it to bring it to modern efficiency and ease but to preserve the old feeling of the 1900's in Maine. Rockland is the first small city in the Penobscot Bay. So beautiful. I like that I can see the water from my street and that I can hear fog horns in a storm.

What makes this house unique

The yard is hedged and fenced but is not sufficient to hold in a dog . It's quite private but you still are a few blocks from downtown, festivals, Main St. and the harbor.

Beautiful Victorian well cared for but not too fussy

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay at the Oriel Davies house on Pleasant Street. It is a beautiful home, well maintained but not to fussy to be comfortable. It has everything you could want and is just a few blocks from the harbor. The yard is lovely showing the care it is regularly given. We had lunch and dinner outside just to enjoy the gardens and the peaceful setting. It is a great location also to visit other towns in addition to Rockland.

This is a beautifully maintained property that is walking distance to downtown Rockland.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at the Orel Davies house and felt at home immediately. Debby made every effort to make sure that the house was clean and well maintained. Her green thumb shows in creating a beautiful garden along with her artistic abilities on the walls in the interiors. She checked in a couple of times to see if we needed anything.

The arts in Rockland are fabulous and the location is easy access so other towns including a two hour drive to Acadia National Park. Overall, we had a lovely week and we enjoyed Maine and meeting the people very much.

Wonderful location and fun house

  • 5 of 5

We so much enjoyed our stay in Rockland at Debbie's house. The location is perfect, a few blocks to the bay and a few blocks to town and the Andrew Wyeth museum. The house was so comfortable for all five of us. Thank you so much Debbie.

A small bit of paradise!

  • 5 of 5

The house and gardens provide a sweet and charming safe haven in a chaotic world. My initial and ongoing response was that I never wanted to leave! And I am hoping to return for another visit soon.

Owner's Response: Dear Carlie, So very kind of you to take the time to help me by writing such a special review. I want you to know that I have thought of you often and feel so fortunate that you came to visit me. I did change the back area garden that we talked about. I'll try to send you a picture. You are so good at the photo upload download thing. Me, not as good at it as you, but will try. Hope you return! Debby

We had our family of five and it was wonderful to all stay in the same place. The house was very comfortable and we where able to enjoy the Rockland area. We could walk downtown in just a few minutes. Debby the owner was fabulous to work with. Lots of good memories.

We love the house style, the furniture and all the decors. The garden is gorgeous, too. I can see lots of effort and love Debby puts in the house which turn it into a lovely home. Beds are comfortable and lots of clean towels and linens available. We enjoy our stay very much. Thanks!

Rockland, Maine is one of the 10 best small cities in America. A rich downtown life, teeming with vibrant art galleries, a world-class museum, restaurants, cafes, pubs, dancing and a nightclub scene. The Strand Theater downtown venues nationally famous live musicians, award-winning movies and opera.
