About the property

Six Bedroom, 2.5 bath on Lk Michigan Beach, block to Portage Lake

This six bedroom, 2.5 bath cottage located on the Lake Michigan beach has been cared for by the same family for almost 100 years. The location is spectacular with miles of fine sand beaches out your front door and beautiful Portage Lake and beaches out your back door. It just does not get much better. The home is not modern and new which makes it the perfect idea of an old fashion beach cottage. Full kitchen with a gas grill on the patio out back. Living room, dining area, and glassed in porch blend together to create the perfect large gathering area. The sand is some of the best in the world, the water is crystal clear and you can wade far offshore before the water gradually gets over your head. Sunsets and evening campfires on the beach are the best. Beautiful drives up the coast along scenic M22 through apple and cherry orchards. Stop and shop at the unique villages along the way. Visit lighthouses and wineries. Six 18 hole golf courses in our county alone; Arcadia Bluffs, The Heathlands, Bear Lake County Highlands, Manistee National, and Manistee Golf and Country Club. Bring your fishing pole and fish right out your door. Book a charter fishing trip out of Portage Lake on Lake Michigan for Salmon and Trout or visit some world class trout and salmon streams in the area. Try your luck at the Little River Casino, 10 miles away. Hope your family gets to experience this wonderful place.

Great place to stay. On Lake Michigan water front.

  • 5 of 5

It was a great place for us and our children and grandchildren. Plenty of room. We particularly liked the beach access and the campfires on the beach were great.

Beautiful Setting, House Accommodates Many Comfortably

  • 4 of 5

This part of Michigan is so lovely. The house is on a quiet stretch of beach and accommodated our group of 7 easily, with ample privacy. The lake itself is so clean and sandy, and with sand bars you really can walk out quite far. The view of the lake from the front bedroom on the 2nd floor is unmatched. I don't know if it would be everyone's cup of tea, but I liked having a toilet and small sink right in our bedroom! Kitchen is pretty well furnished if you like to do your own cooking like we do, but cannot contain very many cooks at one time. We loved and took advantage of the extra refrigerator. The walk to the channel is not too long and provides good exercise as well as nice scenery. Onekama does not have much going on, but we enjoyed day trips to both Manistee and Frankfurt and stopping at farms to buy corn, peaches, honey, etc.

Some things we discovered after we got there:

*Note that the path to the beach is quiet long and has its ups and downs as well as an eroded part at the end that goes down abruptly a few feet. Easy job for most but not for people with mobility issues or the elderly.

*The description that Portage Lake is "out your back door" and to " Bring your fishing pole and fish right out your door" are exaggerations. Though Portage Lake is near, it is not close enough to fish in from the property at all and is a bit of a walk.

*The stairs to the third floor are a little steep and there is no bathroom on that level. It's a good hideaway for teens, though.

A spacious and comfortable cottage great for families. The views and surrounding area are unparallel

  • 5 of 5

A spacious cottage with a comfortable family feel. The views from the front of the cottage are gorgeous. There are beautiful Lake Michigan sunsets every night to watch from your private beach and fire pit. There's a spacious kitchen and places throughout the cottage for everyone to hang out. The beds could use some new mattresses.

6 adult couples - our annual getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Great weekend, wonderful gathering beachfront house for friends. 6BR worked perfectly. Parked 6 vehicles and boat in driveway (a little tight but it worked). Easy access to put 6 kayaks in Portage Lake. We picked a stormy weekend, but one day was perfect and we spent all day on the beach (water was high so beach area was limited). Sunsets were amazing and watching evening storms roll across the lake was spectacular. On a rainy/cool day, we made a short trip to Frankfort for shopping and a visit to Stormcloud Brewery! We will be back!!!

Ann Arbor, Michigan

Spectacular Sunsets

  • 5 of 5

I came up with a group of 8 friends for a golf and casino weekend. The house was perfect for us; more than enough beds and the bathrooms were not a problem.

The house worked well for us, but the real gem here is the Lake Michigan frontage. Absolutely perfect skies in the evening, and the beach is extremely private. We will definitely be back for the next guy's golf trip.
