Overview

About the property

A Perfect Retreat for Retirees, Families, and International Guests:

Built in 1932, our home was once utilized as housing for family members of soldiers stationed at Camp Gordon Johnston, a WWII amphibious military training facility. It has been in our family for 5 generations.

Our home’s amenities include: morning coffee and beautiful sunsets from our large deck overlooking the gulf, the sound of seagulls and of waves lapping the shore, dolphin watching, shore fishing, flounder gigging, and crabbing, swimming and snorkeling in protected waters, long walks at low tide, star-gazing at night, the occasional manatee sighting, and a well-stocked bookshelf. This beach home is the place for you if you desire a getaway from your usual fast-paced lifestyle, in an old-timey Florida setting. There are two bedrooms and baths upstairs and an additional bedroom and bath downstairs. The downstairs also boasts a full kitchen and rec room with billiards/ping pong table. There is a television upstairs and down, and we offer WiFi for those who feel a need to remain 'connected'.

Other features of the surrounding area include:

Tate’s Hell Nature Trail, the historic Carrabelle Lighthouse and Museum, Camp Gordon Johnston World War II Museum, Dog Island ferry excursions, charter fishing, glass-bottom boat rides at Wakulla Springs, Panacea's Gulf Specimen Marine Lab (with touch pools for children), and a variety of local seafood eateries. Located about an hour’s drive from Tallahassee, and only twenty minutes from St. George Island and Apalachicola, this retreat can be tailored to your own adventurous spirit. Come and discover the true meaning of “The Forgotten Coast”.

Some of the annual events found in the local area include:

October: Low Country Boil in Port St. Joe

November: Apalachicola Seafood Festival

December: Carrabelle Holiday on the Harbor & Boat Parade of Lights

January: Apalachicola Oyster Cook-off

February: Low Country Boil in Port St. Joe

March: St. George Island Chili Cook-off.

April: Carrabelle River Front Festival

April: Sopchoppy Worm Gruntin' Festival and Grunter's Ball

May: Panacea Blue Crab Festival

June: Big Bend Salt Water Classic Fishing Tournament.

July: Local Fire Works on 4th

About Nan Dowden

Here I am in my father's arms, along with other family members, representing 3 out of 5 generations who have enjoyed lazy days at Carrabelle Beach. This photo was taken at Palms and Pines in 1963. So many memories! I am a first grade teacher, living in Mobile, Alabama, but am still making memories at our beach house with family and friends.

Why Nan Dowden chose Florida Main North West

I inherited this property in 1983. Because it has been in our family for 5 generations, it harbors a sense of warmth and continuity. Our home has evolved over the years, and offers the modern conveniences one would expect. The decor is simple, yet comfortable. What it may lack in sophistication is compensated for in character and charm.

What makes this house unique

The most unique aspect of 'Palms and Pines' is its secluded and almost completely private location. Carrabelle Beach remains virtually untouched, yet has proximity to many areas of interest and diversity. The area is teeming with wildlife, much of which can be observed without even leaving the deck!

Great Vacation for Snow Bound Canadians

  • 5 of 5

Once again my wife and I had a very enjoyable and relaxing vacation at the Palms and Pines. A Great home and a spectacular setting. We will be returning (6th time I think), for a lengthy stay in 2018. The Owners and Managers have made our stay worry free. "Thanks Folks."

Owner's Response: Thanks for your appreciation of our home and location. Our property management is a small town, family owned operation, and they take care of our property as if it were their own. If there's ever anything you need, from the repair of a leaky faucet to acquiring a sack of fresh harvested oysters, they take care of it! We aspire to make your vacation as relaxing and worry free as possible. Looking forward to your next stay! Thanks again. Owner - Palms and Pines

Nice Place

  • 5 of 5

I guess this was the 5th Vacation my wife and I have been at the Palms and Pines. The Owners and the Managers do a good job of looking after us, and this results in these seniors having a relaxing and very enjoyable time. Will see you again next winter. A great home, in a spectacular location. Bye.--

Owner's Response: So happy to have you return for yet another extended vacation, and thanks for the compliment! We feel blessed to have very conscientious folks looking after the upkeep of our property. The winter temperatures at Carrabelle Beach are generally mild and the beach quite unpopulated. I think that time of year there is just...special. There's something about the position of the sun at that time of year that adds a unique glimmer to the water in the evenings; perfect for a sunset promenade along the shore. But, I don't have to tell you that! Thanks again, and we look forward to accommodating you next winter. Owner, Palms and Pines

Fantastic place to take some time off and relax

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the Palms and Pines as part of my traveling plans to visit the South of the United States and had an amazing time. It is quiet, relaxing with the sound of the waves in the background, only a few steps away from the beach and is located conveniently close to landmarks in the region. Hanging out on the beach, going for long walks watching the sunset. The inside of the house is more than adequate. You will find everything needed to cook, have a good family night, especially with the pool room downstairs. The street itself is very quiet so kids can run around risk-free. The convenience store is only a few miles down the road and you will find everything needed there, and you will find your choice of seafood close by as well if you are in the mood for it. Overall we had a great time and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get away for a while, whether it's for couples or families with kids of all ages.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the great review and the 5 stars! We feel that our location is the best feature of our beach property. Not only is our beach home located on a quiet neighborhood street, away from Hwy 98 traffic, we are at the end of that dead end road, used by residents exclusively. The security and lack of traffic noise adds to the tranquil experience. There is only one other home past ours and then nothing but approx. 13 acres of (you guessed it) palms and pines extending to the edge of where Boggy Jordan Bayou meets the gulf. It's perfect for observing wildlife. We appreciate the excellent 5 star review and hope you'll return to enjoy more of the "Palms and Pines" experience! Owner- Palms and Pines

Great place for family and friends! Quiet, peaceful, and relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at Palms and Pines! It took less than a minute to get to the beach. They provided almost everything to enjoy our stay, even things we didn't think of! We really enjoyed the pool table and ping pong table. The area was so quiet and peaceful.

It was about a 30 minute drive to Apalachicola, where we did a little shopping and went out to eat. Fresh seafood, too! We ate shrimp for days. However, the highlight of the trip was taking photos of dolphins fairly close to the shore at sunset.

Owner's Response: Hi! We're so happy to hear that your stay was enjoyable! We do try to provide the things guests may need upon arrival, because once you're there, you don't want to leave! Watching dolphins frolicking and feeding close to shore is one of our favorite highlights too. We even have some pretty spectacular videos of their "shenanigans" posted on our facebook page, recorded right in front of the house. The quiet surroundings really make a visit very relaxing indeed. It's not called "The Forgotten Coast" for nothing! We hope you'll come back to enjoy the beach, the surrounding area, and the seafood! Thanks for the 5 star review!

Candace

This was the first vacation our youngest had been on. This was also the first time my dad had been on vacation with me and my family in 20 years. We had a great time. There was lots of room for the seven of us. We also had some friends that were staying at another location in town and they were able to join us for dinner without it feeling crowded. It was nice to be able to get together as a group of 13 without feeling crowded. We are working on planning our vacation for this year. Once we get the dates finalized we will be coming back here to stay.

Owner's Response: Candace, I'm so happy that our home allowed your family and friends to gather together in comfort. Our extended family has had many joyful reunions there over the many years. Hopefully, your next stay will be even better, as we've recently installed some new appliances and a new ac/heat system. Thanks so much for choosing Palms and Pines! Owner- Palms and Pines

The Senior Canadians, Eh

  • 5 of 5

We are getting closer to our 2016 Vacation at the Palms and Pines and it dawn'd on me to comment on our stay last year (2015). This will be our 3rd vacation at this beach house and each season its just keeps getting better and better. The owners and the managers have constantly upgraded and improved often in reference to submitted reviews. This place has been great since our first stay 3 years ago, and keeps getting better. The beach and the little community compliments the beach house nicely. All in all, a wonderful and very nicely kept place. Bye,--the Wilsons from Canada.
