Run Down Big Old House
We are a group of ~20 with ~10 kids and we booked this house to spend our Thanksgiving weekend together. The Big House has many twin cots (dorm style), adequate bedrooms & bathrooms, two refrigerators suitable for a large group with multiple families. The bedrooms are all small, furnishing is old and the whole house is run down. The kitchen didn't have a dish washer, a garbage disposal, and decent cook wares (had some nonstick vessels with lots of scratches). The microwave barely worked on low power and the dinner plates are non-microwavable. We struggled to even do some simple cooking. The dining table can only accommodate maximum 6 people at a time and not suitable for large group. In addition to these, the house is infested with mice! Being aware of horror stories with mice and food poisoning, we had to be extra careful with food storage, especially with large group of kids around. We spotted some ants next to the front door and some beetles and moths in the bedrooms.
The house needs major improvement. There were cracks all over the walls and ceiling in the front hall. The mesh in the sliding door next to the dining area is broken. There was one TV upstairs, but there was no antenna or connection to any good channels. Also, it is in a place, where only maximum two adults can comfortably sit and watch. This house is not meant for groups who want to spend time indoors. It is ideally suitable for groups who want to spend the whole day somewhere else and only use the house for night stay.
The house has a spacious outdoor area. But it was unkempt and the outdoor equipment had bird poop all over them.
This house welcomes all visitors, including mice, beetles, ants and moths! We are not renting this place again.
Thank you for the positive feed back on the adequate bedrooms and bathrooms and we are happy you liked the two refrigerators which are great for large groups with multiple families.
The cabin has housed many happy families and pictures of furnishing and bedrooms are vividly seen on the website not sure why your expectation changed on arrival. The website clearly states the following are not included: dishwasher, garbage disposal, cable tv ; again not sure why your expectation changed on arrival. Microwave works and has no issues with other families who visit. Yes this cabin does have the occasional ant and beetle; after all you are in a wilderness off the grid setting. Not sure about the mice, if the doors are left open it is possible. We wish you the best of luck on your next travel experience!
The accomodations were great for our group.
The beds were comfortable and the many bathrooms were great for everyone getting ready at the same time. The play area was great for the little kids. The house was clean and comfortable for our stay. We would recommend it for any group looking for large accomodations. Plenty of refrigeration space with the 2 two door frigerators and kitchen facilities.
My family and I just finished our week stay at your Big House on Dunlap Road, and I want you to know that it is one of the best places we have in the twenty years we have had our annual family gathering. We appreciate your letting us use the facilities.
When we arrived there were only two table knives, and no wine bottle opener. We are pleased to be able to donate a bottle opener, twelve table/steak knives and a dish drainer to your facility.
Some truth in advertising considerations: The stove has five burners, not six. There is no fire place, but instead a large wood-burning stove. There were no sheets for the bunk beds, which a large family would certainly use. The television is only used to watch DVDs, there is no commercial television service. White-water rafting is only available from April to mid July.
Minor problems: Two bulbs in the main chandelier are burned out, as is the light over the sink.
Major problem: I wished to show the stars at night to my mostly city-living family members, and the best place to do it was the back yard where there was more opening to the sky. However, the outside light in the rear of the house prevented this. We could not find a switch to turn out the light so we tried the breakers in the main breaker panel. None of them would turn off the light, but the light could be turned off with the main breaker switch. Since this turned of all the power to the house, we did not want to use this method of turning out the outside light. However, this operation showed that the breaker switch that controls the light is no longer functional, and that circuit is no longer protected. Thus a short in that line for any reason could cause considerable damage, most likely a fire. I did not have any test equipment with me to determine which breaker is bad, but an electrician could do so quickly and replace any bad breakers.
Potential really major problem: The main breaker panel is an indoor panel, not rated for outside use. Thus rain and snow can get into the panel. Water is the enemy of electrical things, and will eventually destroy any breakers not already made unfunctional. The breaker panel should be replaced with an outside rated one, or a water proof enclosure should be built around the panel before serious damage occurs to your lovely property.
Perfect for a big Family
Everything was perfect. Our family will have beautiful memories of this trip for ever. Thank you guys and we look forward to staying here again in the future.
HUGE HOUSE, LOTS OF SPACE
The house has tons of space both indoors and outdoors, this is a plus when traveling with a large group. A few of the positive things the house has: (1) Two huge refrigerators (2) AC works great (3) Lots of Beds (4) Washer and Drier a must when traveling. (5) Ping Pong table, and kids swings awesome (6) A huge play room, that was used to play by the kids, it was an awesome. A few con's (1) Ants everywhere( expected when you are in the outdoors (2) Frogs everywhere (comes with the territory, there is a pond near by. Overall the house served it's purpose.
Blessed to have had the oppritunity to stay there.
My family and I stayed at the Big House. We really appreciated the quiet time we spent there. The place is beautiful and being there gave us the opportunity to have the quiet time we were looking for to be with our family.
Everything there was great and we would highly recommend this place to anyone who is interested in spending some quiet time with their family.
Everything was very comfortable and there was plenty of space to accommodate the group we had up there. In my opinion everything was perfect and we would love to stay there again in the future.
