About Southern Comfort

After traveling Europe and US for 20 years, discovered the quaint town of Helen in home state of Georgia. We brought friends and family up to the North Georgia mountains for 10 years before opening our place to VRBO guests.

Southern Comfort purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Southern Comfort chose Helen

We walked up the mountain overlooking Helen, saw the view and decided this was the place to build a place to come back to with family and friends. Modeled the hot tub and decks after an Austrian chalet, the house plans after a Montana dude ranch and the fireplaces resemble those of the family ranch in the Uintah mountains out west, including use of local stonework.

What makes this cabin unique

Views, Huge open space, Secluded mountain woodland, Helen Amenities and a unique North Georgia Stone and Cedar home make this the perfect family mountain retreat.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a group of 8 here to stay for Halloween 2015. We had a blast and loved the house. The convenience to Helen was great!

We came here last minute when we had to escape Irma. Keith who owns the property was very kind and easy to reach if we ever had a question! The house is very large so I would imagine it's more fun to have two families stay together because we only occupied half of the space. Pet friendly which is a plus. The house could use a little updating but has a cozy feeling.

Owner's Response: We loved hosting this family as Irma ravaged Florida and joined in their prayers to avoid damage down south. Thankfully the storm did less damage than expected and they were able to return once the storm passed. You'all have to join us again with friends to fill our home in the mountains!

Great location , house distribution and beautiful view.

Was our first time to Helen and we enjoyed the town is a little treasure, the house was perfect for our family size with a great location. We had everything needed handy and available. One opportunity for improvement will be to consider winter linens was lower 20 s and was very helpful we bring our flannel blankets and sheets. Is nice to have the two fireplaces we are a very close family so we didn’t use the second kitchen at all. Definitively we plan to return probably in the summer we learn about all the amenities around during this time. Thank you for allowing us to stayed at your home . Many blessings 🙏🏻

Owner's Response: We like to spread our Indian blankets around the sofas in front of the fireplaces and have extra quilts in the closets, but had not considered flannel sheets, which would have been awesome during our 20 degree week! Thank you for your stay and we look forward to your return to the Southern Comfort! - Keith

Smyrna, Georgia

Secluded hideaway yet conveniently close to Helen.

Wonderful cabin/home to gather family and/or friends in, whether you are in the Helen area to enjoy the town or the mountains. The host, Keith, is very accommodating, upbeat and positive, and very responsive. We had seven adults in our group and we had plenty of room and privacy for each of us.

Our host, Keith, was amazingly kind and met me at the cabin well in advance of our family's stay. Keith allowed me to take measurements of the tables and rooms, facilitating my preparations for the wedding we held there. I was also able to test the acoustics in the walk-in level living area, which were amazing!

PARKING: plenty of parking space for five vehicles, while at first glance you may not think it is possible

LOCATION: overlooking the town of Helen from an elevated perch, while within walking distance, the walk back up the hill is a good workout; there are neighbors, but they are far enough away to provide occupants with plenty of privacy; the views are gorgeous!

EXTERIOR: well maintained wooden structure with expansive upper and lower decks, with wrought iron tables and chairs;, corn hole bag toss game; hot tub outside of master bedroom, surrounded by fencing that provides complete; privacy; fire=pit available with seating; there is even a dog washing station!

KITCHENS: there are 2! one on each level, and they are both fully stocked with pots, pans, can openers, coffee makers, toasters, oven mitts, dish detergent, etc.;

DININGROOM AREAS: one is right off the upper kitchen, complete with a tall expandable table and six comfortable tall matching chairs/stools; the other is within the lower kitchen and includes a table and four chairs;

LIVINGROOMS: each has a gorgeous large fireplace; they each have a large couch and a couple love seat sized couches; TVs with cable in each, lots of board games;

BATHROOMS: one off each of the master bedrooms that are on each level; a full additional shower on the walk-in level; each was fully stocked with plenty of towel;

BEDROOMS: walk in level has a moderately sized bedroom with a pair of twin beds, as well as an expansive 'master' bedroom with a queen sized bed and adjoining full bathroom; lower level has a large bedroom with a queen bed, and glass doors that open onto a deck, as well as an expansive 'master' bedroom with a queen sized bed and adjoining full bathroom; each has plenty of blankets and sheets; and

GAME ROOM: regulation sized pool table and accompanying supplies, on lower level.

Owner's Response: It's not often that our guests transform our property into a showcase, but this guest's wedding pictures reflected a true winter wonderland in the mountains! We look forward to a long relationship with this beautiful family and thank them for letting us glimpse and hear their memorable wedding experience.

Owner's Response: Loved working with this family to reset a tripped electric breaker. This Egyptian Christian family shared some of their grilled breakfast as we compared notes on our UGA student experiences. We look forward to your return and sharing our property updates from your suggestions.

Little Disappointed

  • 3 of 5

The location was great but house was not as clean as I like. It did have 4 bedrooms and 3 baths but the bedrooms and bathrooms were not located conveniently to each other. We did not try to cook a meal but kitchen seemed to need restocking. There were 4-6 mismatched wine glasses but no cocktail glasses. I would not go back to this property.

Owner's Response: 3 bathrooms are next door to the bedrooms and could not be closer! Additionally, all four bedrooms are non adjoining to provide plenty of privacy in our huge 3600 sq foot layout. The cabin is always spotlessly clean and glasses had three full sets, but third set of dishes was in the downstairs (second) dishwasher, and may have been overlooked by guest. Total glass count: over 100!
