Country cottage with private, secluded garden in woodland setting.
About Aileen Hynd
I am a retired English teacher who moved to Birnie House with my family to enjoy the peace and beauty of the countryside and I now share that with others who are very welcome to stay in what was the gardener’s cottage.
Aileen Hynd purchased this Cottage in 2007
Why Aileen Hynd chose Blairgowrie
The gardener’s cottage, although nearby, is very private and very important to us as it is part of the history of the house and, more recently, has become a place of happiness and laughter for people visiting from all over the world.
What makes this Cottage unique
The house and cottage have the advantage of seeming to be quite remote and ideally situated for enjoying watching birds and squirrels and, sometimes, deer and, without driving anywhere, you can go walking in woodland and by fields and it is very private, but also within five minutes of a very busy, small country town with everything you need.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.

Excellent and very well equipped. Perfect for dog owners.
Everything was perfect and the location was ideal for dog owners. We were there with our Labrador Jak for the Canix competion at Glamis castle. The cottage is very well equipped for self catering and has everything you could possible want. Lovely location with the woods and walks immediately at the back of the cottage. Bob and Aileen are very friendly and helpful hosts and they have two lovely friendly dogs.
We are delighted that Birnie was the ideal location for your recent participation in the Canix at Glamis. We remember our own holidays with our dogs and how often we were disappointed in how unsuitable and expensive it was to take our furry friends with us. That is why we do not charge for dogs and how delighted we are that dog owners enjoy the garden and the walks from the cottage. Well done to you and Jak for taking part in something that sounds like a lot of fun for you both! 🤗
Birnie Cottage near Alyth
Our hosts, Aileen and Bob were very warm and welcoming. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at pretty and peaceful Birnie cottage with its large well equipped kitchen, lovely big bright lounge and double bedroom. The spacious garden backs onto interesting woods which the we and the dogs loved walking through. We had the thrill of spotting deer and hares in the field behind the woods. It was wonderful to watch the red squirrels and birds on the feeders from the kitchen window and the garden, and the cottage was a fantastic base for exploring the area.
We are so glad you thoroughly enjoyed your stay with us. We are very keen to encourage our visitors to bring their dogs with them on holiday and, as you know, we do not charge extra for them. You all had a long journey here and back home so we hope they enjoyed their holiday as well and we hope you have now received the parcel of clothing you left behind. You were also very lucky with the weather but we are glad that didn’t stop you from enjoying the delights of an open fire in the evenings.
Fantastic cottage in great location and beautiful setting.
We had a great time in the Gardeners Cottage at Birnie House. The cottage was really nice and had everything you need to make it an enjoyable break. The scones on arrival were a tasty and welcome treat too. The owners are really nice and friendly and their dogs are equally welcoming. The curious chickens were fun too. Would recommend to anyone and hope to return soon, thanks Bob and Aileen
How lovely that you are hoping to return. You will certainly be very welcome and, from Easter onwards, many more places will be open and, of course, it will be warmer. You may still want the open fire even in Summer but, whatever time of year, the squirrels will still be here to entertain you. 🤗
just spent a week in this cottage, loved it such a cosy well equipped place. made all the better by the lovely welcome and important supplies( scones and jam) loved having a coal fire to make toast on the old fashioned way. had regular visits from very cute red squirrels but sadly no deer never mind we might see them next time as we will definitely be back thank you Aileen and Bob xx
We’re so pleased you enjoyed your stay and, yes, aren’t the red squirrels a joy to watch? I did actually see the deer in the wood facing the front of the cottage but you were away that day and I did feel sorry that you'd missed seeing them but, as you say, next time! You will be more than welcome.
Lovely location and a cosy and comfortable cottage.
Great hosts in Aileen and Bob. The cottage has everything you need for a home away from home. Loved the open fire and the red squirrels were a source of amusement.
The location is great whether you want to be away from it all walking in the Cairngorms national park but also close enough to shopping in Perth or Dundee.
We would definitely recommend this cottage and want to thank Aileen and Bob for their hospitality.
It’s lovely to hear that you have enjoyed staying at Birnie. It is in a good location for visits to most places and we like to think it’s a great base to return to after a hard day’s touring. The squirrels and deer, the walks in the woods and the open fire all help, I’m sure, and we hope you’ll come back and see us again some day.
The small town of Alyth is two miles away, convenient for supplies, restaurants and pubs. Glamis Castle (childhood home of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother) is just a few miles away and is one of Scotland's most beautiful castles. Dundee and Perth are within a 30 minute journey for swimming pools, theatres, cinemas and shopping, and Scott of the Antarctic's RRS Discovery. St Andrews, the home of golf, is less than an hour away and there are several golf courses nearby (3 within 3 miles!) You can go skiing at Glenshee and hillwalking in the Sidlaws. (Alyth is also on the route of the Cateran Trail). Shooting and fishing can be arranged, in season, and there is a country sports centre featuring clay shooting, archery and quad biking within easy reach.
Birnie is ideally situated as a central point for most activities from beaches and mountains to hillwalking and fishing to golfing and riding to theatres and shopping. There is even the 'home' of Peter Pan in nearby Kirriemuir!
Golf: This cottage is at the heart of what must be a golfer's paradise. Between two and twenty miles from Birnie are: Alyth Golf Club, a moorland,18 hole course with tricky greens; Glenisla Golf Centre, a rolling parkland, 18 hole course with water hazards, set in beautiful scenery; Strathmore Golf Centre and Driving Range which offers a challenging 18 hole course and an easier 9 hole course with plenty of other facilities in rolling parkland which has excellent teaching facilities at the golf academy including a 10 bay floodlit driving range, short game practice area and 6 hole putting green; Blairgowrie Golf Club (Rosemount), which has two heathland, 18 hole courses and one 9 hole course in wooded surroundings; Kirriemuir Golf Club, a parkland and heathland, 18 hole course; Piperdam Golf Driving Range, which helps to perfect your golf swing at the 12 bay driving range with a short game area and professional tuition; Guthrie Castle Golf Course, designed to be the ultimate golf challenge, taking advantage of all natural hazards and truly one of a kind; Downfield Golf Club, a very fine heavily wooded parkland,18 hole course of championship standard, but good for all levels of golfer to enjoy.
In less than 30 miles there are Carnoustie Golf Links, having three famous courses in this complex, two of them less challenging than the famous Championship course and, St Andrews - the Home of Golf, which has 10 courses close to the town centre including the Old Course and Kingsbarns. Enjoy!
Ski: The cottage is ideally situated for ski-ing at Glenshee which is located at Cairnwell Pass where the A93 enters the Cairngorms National Park. Alyth is only 20 miles away via the B954 to Dykend on the B951 and then on to the A93. It is also accessible from Blairgowrie via the A93. With its diversity of pistes, Glenshee offers something for everyone from invitingly easy to the surprisingly steep, the most extensive skiing and snowboarding in Scotland. Beginners are able to get to grips with skiing and snowboarding on the nursery slopes and it is also ideal for intermediate skiers/snowboarders with no less than 26 blue and red runs, varying from the long and exhilarating to the short and steep. Experienced skiers and boarders, however, are able to test their skills on two excellent black runs. The "Tiger" is one of the most renowned runs in Scotland and visitors often come just to spectate. Recently the centre has upgraded the chairlift which takes you to the top of this mountain. Snowboarders are also treated to a specially designed Fun Park. With so much choice, it is easy to see why Glenshee is Scotland's premier resort.
