Enjoy breathtaking views of the Sierra foothills from BUTTERFLY RIDGE VACATION HOME at 3200 ft. above sea level! This comfortable well-maintained 1800 sq. ft. home with brand-new flooring throughout since March 2015 has two bedrooms and two bathrooms and a well equipped kitchen. We can accommodate a party of 8 people comfortably with one queen size bed, 2 double beds, a queen-size sleeper couch and even an optional queen-size inflatable mattress. Central forced-air heating and air conditioning throughout. A paved road and driveway lead to this quiet, private and nicely landscaped 5 acre lot. You'll have easy access to Hwy. 140, only 2.5 miles away. From there you can choose to go northeast to Yosemite National Park (only 29 miles from the home) or go southwest to historic Mariposa (7 miles from the home) for shopping, dining, groceries, interesting museums and the picturesque 160 year old Mariposa County courthouse, the oldest continually operated court house west of Missouri (tours available).

For things to see and do in the different seasons please scroll down to the bottom of this page.

Your family will never be bored here. We have a professional-grade 9 foot pool table in the game room. The living room has a designated game table supplied with lots of board games, playing cards and poker chips. We have a collection of children's books and books about Yosemite Park and local hiking trails. You can enjoy Playstation 2 video gaming on our 52 inch LCD TV, or watch satellite TV and crystal clear blu-ray movies in high definition. Included among the blu-rays are three acclaimed BBC Earth sets: Planet Earth (4 discs), Human Planet (3 discs) and Life (4 discs). These are magnificent and informative documentaries depicting the wonders of our planet and are great for family viewing. Brochures, maps and books about the area provide a way to plan your stay. Things to see and do in the area include dozens of scenic places and hikes in Yosemite Park, rafting on the Merced River, swimming, fishing, mountain biking or walking along the Merced River at Briceberg, swimming and boating at Bass Lake or Lake McSwain, and interesting walks and hikes in the Mariposa area. Mariposa also hosts concerts in the Art Park every summer weekend and has several art galleries. The county park is a great place for families to visit, providing a large swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball court, picnic areas, a skateboard park and a concert venue.

This quiet property is far away from city lights and secluded from neighbors. On moonless nights, you can clearly see the Milky Way spanning the sky - something you will never see under the bright city lights. It is a mesmerizing moment that your family will never forget. There are also mature grape vines and fruit trees in the backyard. Feel free to pick and eat from them when you visit in the right seasons! (The grapes are ripe in August.)

Natural foliage on this hillside property creates habitat for deer families, squirrels, rabbits and dozens of bird species including humming birds. The back yard is chain link fenced to keep the deer away from the grape vines.

Linens, bedding, towels, paper goods, trash bags, dish washing and dishwasher soap and hand soap are all provided. The kitchen is fully equipped, with attention to detail, and has everything you'll need to prepare and serve your meals. The brand new dining table seats 8 in comfortable ergonomic padded chairs.

Guests are welcome to park in the attached garage. There are parking spaces for a total of 3 vehicles at the house, including the garage. A brand new crib and high chair are stored in a closet and are put out for guest use upon request.

SPRING is the best time to see waterfalls at their peak in Yosemite Park. The snow remaining in the highest elevations melts and flows into streams that feed the waterfalls. Other than an occasional rain, you'll find very pleasant weather and smaller crowds for hiking. Some higher elevation hikes may be closed until late spring. This is a great time to raft the Wild and Scenic Merced River, or take amazing wildflower hikes in the Merced River Canyon or Hite's Cove, outside the park (March-May). Family fun at the Butterfly Festival in Mariposa (first weekend in May) or try to win the $10,000 prize at the Annual Fishing Derby at Bass Lake (first weekend in May).

SUMMER offers months of dry, warm, sunny weather. All hiking trails are open throughout the park. The high elevation roads to Glacier Point and Tioga Pass are open. This is a good time for horseback riding, morning hiking, bicycling, and even Merced River swimming in Yosemite and Briceberg Canyon. Bass Lake is another great place for swimming, boating and hiking. (Boat rentals available). The Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad is a fun family experience. Ride in open railroad cars, pulled along historic tracks through a beautiful forest, by a steam locomotive. Enjoy musical events on weekend evenings in the Art Park in Mariposa.

AUTUMN is a wonderful time to hike in Yosemite! The gorgeous fall colors last for months. Cooler but comfortable weather and smaller crowds make this time of year special and invigorating! Some waterfalls have diminished flows, but Vernal and Nevada Falls are still spectacular! Plenty of sunshine despite an occasional rain. Enjoy the beautiful greening foothills at one of the local ziplines. Family fun at the 4-day County Fair at the Mariposa Co. Fair Grounds over Labor Day weekend. Amazing natural wonders at the CA State Mining and Mineral Museum.

WINTER: When snow begins to fall in Yosemite ice-skating, downhill skiing, and snowshoeing (especially in the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias) are special treats. (Rentals available.) The mountains glisten in the sun. Hiking paths in Yosemite Valley are plowed and often free of snow. Make a snowman or go sledding. Horse-drawn sleigh rides or hayrides available at Christmas just outside the park. You’ll enjoy the brisk but varying weather if you dress in layers. Days are often clear, even in winter. In Mariposa, at 2,000 ft. elevation, snow is infrequent and melts, but if you want snow you can always find it at some elevation in Yosemite Park. Bring tire chains or 4WD, but chains aren't often needed unless driving higher than Yosemite Valley.

Why Magdalena Beall chose Yosemite Area

We love outdoor activities and stargazing. This property is far away from city lights. It's seven miles from the historic and charming town of Mariposa and only 29 miles from the west entrance of Yosemite Park along Hwy. 140. We love the natural peace and quiet shared with the deer and singing birds. Partake of the fruit of the grape vines and fruit trees in season. This is a wonderful family friendly home.

What makes this house unique

Magnificent views of the Sierra foothills and the setting sun. Star gazing is amazing in this rural setting without bright lights to interfere. Easy access with well paved roads. Quiet and private country setting with all modern conveniences. Located on 5 acre property. There are neighbors but you won't hear them or see their homes in these wooded hills. Lots of privacy and nature.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Since January 2014, Butterfly Ridge Vacation Home has been managed by Yosemite Vacation Rental Management, of Mariposa. Since that time the owner has invested in a lot of brand new furnishings, including a queen-size sleeper couch and 2 comfortable swiveling leather recliners in the living room, a new dining table and chairs with seating for 8, new quilts and sheet sets, new towels, children's toys, and numerous items to make the kitchen truly fully equipped for cooking and dining. There are lots of beautiful new pictures on the walls and some new books about things to see and do in Yosemite. We've been pleasing guests in our vacation rental homes since 2001 and we treat our guests the way we ourselves would like to be treated. We're always available and responsive should any question or need arise during your stay. We live only 7 miles away. Rest assured that the home will be clean and well cared for when you arrive. We strive to deliver a hassle-free and pleasant experience so you can enjoy your vacation. We sincerely hope that you and your family will come with confidence to enjoy the wonders of Yosemite and other beautiful places close by, here in the Sierra foothills. We wish you a wonderful time of family fun and bonding. We keep a thorough information manual about the home and the area on the kitchen counter. Nevertheless, always feel free to call us before, during, or after your stay for advice on things to see and do, to get a question answered or a need taken care of. Wishing you the very best!

Spacious Ranch style home with fantastic view

  • 5 of 5

This place is great. Very clean, spacious and comfortable. We had three adults in our group and having so much space was wonderful. The beds are very comfortable. Two bathrooms always nice. Fully equipped kitchen helps to save money, much appreciated. A car is a must as the place is up in the hills near Mariposa (lots of curvy mountain roads). Took less than one hour to get into Yosemite (early start recommended). Owners kept us informed about a wildfire in the area (not a problem thankfully). Definitely recommend this place!

This house had what we needed after long days in the park.

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful view, boys enjoyed the pool table, kitchen had everything we needed, spacious garage made loading and unloading easy, large cooler and ice packs was an added bonus. Entry and departure directions were clear and easy to follow. Everything was neat and orderly. Just as described on VRBO. No surprises here.

Wonderful Home!!!

  • 5 of 5

For our family cross-country trip that was beginning with Yosemite, we wanted a nice place that was not a hotel and felt like "home". We were not disappointed. There was plenty of room for 5 (which is not an easy thing for 5 people - parents and three teenagers) - with the sofabed, we could have easily had three more people there without any problems. The view from the front patio area was wonderful. The house was clean, had everything we needed, and truly felt like a "home". If we ever come back to this area, we will definitely consider this again. THANK YOU!!

Well equipped home perfect for a family with kids. View from the house is spectacular.

  • 4 of 5

The house is very comfortable and well equipped. Great for family with kids. Beautiful vista view. A bit of a drive into Yosemite. Mariposa is close and has a grocery store, restaurants, and shopping which is very convenient. We would stay here again. I only rated 4 star because of the distance to Yosemite. Overall quality and rating is 5 star.

Owner's Response: Thanks Pam, for your positive review! Regarding the distance of this home from Yosemite Park: It is correctly advertised as 29 miles from this home to the west entrance station. Then, from the entrance station to the Yosemite Valley Loop Rd. where you enter the valley is another 7 miles. The drive to the entrance station can be done in as little as 45 minutes if a person leaves early, by 6 or 7 a.m. (That's what I recommend in the summer.) The volume of vehicles trying to enter the park increases steadily later in the day and can get backed up in places, especially in the busiest summer months. This home is closer to the west entrance than the majority of Mariposa vacation rentals. There are some closer vacation rentals that are actually inside Yosemite Park, but most of them are also a substantial distance from the Yosemite Valley, have much less privacy, and are at least twice as expensive.

Great views !! Very spacious home

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for renting us this gorgeous home. We had an amazing stay. Great views from the patio and the dinning area. The night sky is simply mesmerizing. 140 was closed due to rock slide when we went. The owner left notes on getting to south entrance to Yosemite valley. We enjoyed every bit of it. Lots of board games to keep everyone occupied.

Beautiful View

  • 5 of 5

While the villages in Yosemite Valley are teaming with visitor chaos everywhere, this house is surrounded by tranquility and a beautiful view. Our family of 4 had plenty of space to spread out or be together either at one of the tables or on comfortable chairs in the living room. Although it takes an hour to drive into Yosemite Valley, this is one of the closest home rentals to the National Park. The kitchen is plenty spacious and well equipped.
