The house and grounds are outstanding. Beautifully clean and well presented, it was a pleasure to stay. The house is located on a farm and it was a real treat to see the working of the vineyards.
We arrived on a bank holiday and every thing was closed. It would have been good to know this but nevertheless we found a great restaurant so we definitely didn’t starve!
Canelli is not a natural choice for a holiday so it is good to have transport as there are a number of beautiful towns and villages in the area and you need to go further afield to experience the atmosphere of the surrounding area.
Milan is a place to visit as is Cinque Terre even though these make for long days.
Overall it was a fantastic holiday!!
Spacious and well located apartment in the Canelli hills
My husband and I rented this spacious apartment in the Canelli hills. We have stayed in the Piedmont area several times but this was our first time in the Canelli region. We liked this location, midst in a vineyard area but still very close to the Canelli town. We went for winetasting/tours in Canelli and can especially recommend visiting the Coppo winemaker. Nearby towns, such as Acqui Terme and Nizza Monferrato (and many other charming smaller towns) are also within a short drive. The apartment was very cozy and spacious, and well equipped (with both a dishwasher and a washing machine). The owner was friendly and had a bottle of wine and water waiting in the fridge for us when we arrived. The outdoor area is spacious with nice sun loungers and table+chairs for outdoor meals and relaxation. The only problem we encountered were unusually abundant mosquitos, likely due to favorable weather conditions this summer.
Schöner Aufenthalt vom 28. Mai bis 11. Juni
House in the heart of Piemont wine country
Beautiful house, a part of a small group of traditional farm buildings. Other buildings are actively used for farming the surrounding vineyards - but nothing to disturb the stay (we were there at the start of the grape harvest) in fact it added to the interest of the stay. I would say that it would be completely safe for children as the working areas are a bit separate from the house/lawns etc.
The house itself is either modern or thoroughly restored, very clean and well-equipped. Spacious for four - exceptionally so for two! A very quiet and relaxing area. Car essential - but the local roads are quiet and safe. All local people were helpful and friendly, including in shops and markets. Not a huge amount of English spoken but everyone was patient and helpful.
Angela, the owner, was charming (but works in Turin during the week). She gave us a box of vegetables and eggs from the smallholding attached to the buildings! Lots to do in the area, including a great number of local walks (nb all the maps of the local area seem to include numerous inaccuracies - but most walks are marked with red and white signs, and it's hard to get too lost in the local lanes).
There are four wine producers in Canelli (nearest town) making excellent spumante and other wines, as well as an artisanal grappa distiller. Short drive to Barolo, Barbera and Barbaresco - please please go to the amazing and eccentric wine museum in Barolo! Also close to Asti, Alba and Acqui Terme. Lots of local food festivals, palio at Asti and a reconstruction of the siege of Canelli - so plan the time of your trip to suit.
The area in many ways resembles Tuscany - rolling hills, chestnut forests, vines - but without the crowds, intensive tourism, rude cities etc. Local specialities also include hazelnuts - Nutella is a local product!
I am very happy that you enjoyed and were satisfied with your stay. Thank you as well for valuing the fact that the house is nestled in a rural reality, that upon your arrival, was experiencing the most important of its events, the grape harvest. As a matter of fact, the entire economy of the area revolves around the vines and grapes; the cultivation of the vine is the predominant agricultural activity and the winemaking is the main industry of this area. But, the harvest is also a social event where people have opportunity, working and struggling together, to meet, to talk, and finally, to celebrate the harvest which is the result of an entire years work. The atmosphere is therefore mostly festive, in a beautiful context, that not for no reason was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
It is also gratifying for me to know that our ongoing work aimed to make the house pleasant and functional was appreciated by you.
I hope to welcome you again in Canelli
Spacious modern farmhouse in gorgeous surroundings in vineyards, charming grounds.
Terrific value, close to town, beautiful views.
Great Home Away from Home
We stayed for one week with our two small children in this well furnished and spacious apartment. We have stayed in several rental homes and apartments in Italy and this was among the best. Everything was clean and convenient and we truly felt at home here with all basic needs met. The house has a beautiful setting in the hills among vineyards, yet it is very convenient for shopping and several towns are a short drive away. The owner is accommodating and the value of the price for quality is outstanding. Highly recommended. We plan to return.
In the Province of Asti, about an hour away from Milan, Turin and Genoa and slightly further away from Switzerland and France, in the heart of the Monferrato region, you will find Canelli.
Canelli is famous for its wines, in particular the Moscato, its vineyards and wine routes, not to mention its underground wine cellars extending 13km under the town, commonly known as the 'underground cathedrals'. The latter currently a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Not only a premier wine region, Canelli is also renowned for its hazelnuts and truffles. The historic towns of Alba, Asti, Barolo are all in the vicinity.
The Monferrato region has many castles, some of which are open to public from June to October. There are various markets selling antiques and local produce at all the nearby villages and towns.
Other Activities: Quad biking, Wellness centre - hot springs, golf 30 km from Canelli
