About Diane and Bud

Bud and Diane purchased this property as a weekend getaway in late 2010. They enjoy the site's overall peacefulness and beauty and the quaintness of Julian itself.

Diane and Bud purchased this studio in 2010

Why Diane and Bud chose Julian

Our Julian property was purchased to escape the heat of our desert home. It is close enough for us to commute to our jobs and while we will eventually make it our permanent residence after we retire, we wanted to share Julian with others and are able to do this, with a 550 square-foot studio cottage that sits behind the main residence.

What makes this studio unique

Julian, California, once the location of a booming gold rush, is now a picturesque alpine resort about an hour northeast of San Diego. It is an official California Historical Landmark, No. 412, and history buffs will find much to take an interest in, as will anyone with a taste for apple pie, which Julian is famous for. The relative nearness of various state, national and county parks is sure to please avid outdoorspeople, as is the scenic, fish-rich reservoir of Lake Cuyamacha (only about 8 miles to the southeast). Additionally, the area's high elevation treats residents to all four seasons, so there's never really a dull moment.

Map

Julian, a quaint town known for their apple pie and cider, attracts many visitors year round. Many come not only for the pie but to walk the Main Street stopping at each of the shops along the way. Others come for a range of activities from hiking and biking to fishing and horseback riding. Special activities or events happen almost every weekend.

It was like staying in a tree house :)

  • 4 of 5

It was quiet and peaceful and it felt like we were in a tree house! The only thing I would have liked was for the bed to be further from the fireplace. It was the only source of heat and it was right at the head of our bed and got really hot after only a few minutes. So we had to keep turning it off to cool down and then back on once it was cold again. It would maybe be better to put the bed on the kitchen level with a space heater and the couch up by the fireplace instead.

Owner's Response: Tree house....what an original way to describe our cottage. It's a first and we like it!! Yes, the bed is fairly close to the fireplace and it will probably have to stay there. If we ever do have the opportunity to remodel the cottage we will consider your suggestion. You came during the time of year when the fireplace may be needed but may not. A couple suggestions we have would be if the cottage gets to hot with the fireplace on open a couple windows to allow some cool air in. We also have a floor heater stored in the closet that could have been used instead of the fireplace. We appreciate you taking the time to post a review.

Beautiful, Perfectly Comfortable, Cozy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

When my wife and I checked in, Diane walked us through the cottage and showed us every little detail. The cottage was beautifully decorated with the Fall theme. The Bed was very comfortable and the jetted tub in the bathroom was just what I needed after a day of hiking! The kitchen had all the dishes and items we needed. All through this cozy cottage, the owners' passion for decoration and the commitment to guests' comfort was clearly evident. We absolutely enjoyed our stay and appreciate the efforts taken by the owners. The cottage is located just a short distance from Julian's Main street, has complete privacy and is very quiet. Before our stay, I was communicating with Diane about hiking, things to do in Julian and restaurants. Diane quickly responded to all our queries and provided very good information. We would love to come back and stay here again.

Lovely cottage close to downtown

  • 4 of 5

Great location really close to town. You could ride your bike there. Cottage had everything we needed. Took away 1 star for bed. We just like it a bit firmer. Everything else was good.

Owner's Response: Yes, we are close enough to town to walk or ride a bike the only problem is you would be on a pretty busy (during the weekend) highway. Glad you found the cottage to have everything you needed during your stay. We feel bad the bed was not firm enough for you but we do get many positive feed backs that it is very comfortable. Thank you for posting a review.

Peaceful and very cozy!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time staying in this cottage! The bed was so comfortable, the AC was on point, and the in home snacks were an added bonus for late night munchies. Lastly, the hosts were very friendly and happy to accommodate with whatever we needed. Thanks and Cheers!

Owner's Response: Glad you appreciated the snacks as they are a new addition to what we provide in the cottage. A lot of our guests let us know how comfortable the bed is and we're glad you felt that way too. Especially during the summer months in Julian the AC unit is a must and we have heard that not all rentals have it. Thank you for taking the time to post a review, we appreciate it.

Absolutely a great place to visit!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was clean and comfortable as we expected. The Managers were always accessible and full of great information about the area. Be aware there are some stairs to climb to the cottage. If you don't mind a few stairs, this is the perfect place to visit!

Owner's Response: Yes, there are a few steps up to our cottage and once inside there is a step up to the area where the queen bed is located. The living room which has a full sofa sleeper, kitchenette and bathroom are all on the main living space. We put a lot into readying our cottage and property for our guests and we appreciate that they can see that. We too want our guests to feel at home during their stay. Although we have not been Julian residents all that long we try to be as helpful as we can. Thank you, for taking the time to post your review.

A slice of heaven....

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the cottage was fantastic! It was very comfortable, quiet and very private. The cottage is only a few minutes drive to the quaint little town of Julian. If you're in the mood for pies... Julian is your place :) We had everything we needed in the cottage and Diane and Bud were super welcoming. It's always appreciated when you rent a little home away from home when the owners provide a few breakfast items (coffee, cream, sugar, salt and pepper...) and various little snacks. We would definately recommend to stay there, as a matter of fact, we want to go back hopefully in the near future. We loved it there! Thank you!

Owner's Response: We are always happy to hear that our guests loved their stay in our cottage and that they would not only recommend it but would like to return. We hope you do and it will make us happy to welcome you back. Some of the items we provide have been staples since we started renting our cottage but the snacks are a new addition. Glad you mentioned and appreciated them!! We think our property is located in the perfect spot...about 1 mile to Julian's Main Street and all it offers but far enough away if you're looking for the serenity of the mountains. We appreciated your review and that you took the time to post one.
