Surrounded by black oak and pine trees and located in the private, peaceful neighborhood of Whispering Pines this homey cottage rests a mere 1.5 miles to the east of town, off Route 78. The cottage features a queen-sized bed, a sofa sleeper and a flat-screen TV, easily visible from both bed and sofa.
The restroom has all the usual amenities, as well as a jetted tub to relax in. There is a big bay window, perfect for standing by and taking in the scenery, and the kitchenette boasts of a microwave, a small stove and a refrigerator. Another nice feature is the gas fireplace, to sit beside during the cold winters.
The back patio makes a great site for enjoying your morning coffee, outside dining, or simply lounging. It is also an ideal spot for bird-watching and, from there, you stand a good chance of catching a glimpse of some of the local wildlife. Mule deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, foxes and bobcats frequent the hillsides.

Bud and Diane purchased this property as a weekend getaway in late 2010. They enjoy the site's overall peacefulness and beauty and the quaintness of Julian itself.
Diane and Bud purchased this studio in 2010
Our Julian property was purchased to escape the heat of our desert home. It is close enough for us to commute to our jobs and while we will eventually make it our permanent residence after we retire, we wanted to share Julian with others and are able to do this, with a 550 square-foot studio cottage that sits behind the main residence.
Julian, California, once the location of a booming gold rush, is now a picturesque alpine resort about an hour northeast of San Diego. It is an official California Historical Landmark, No. 412, and history buffs will find much to take an interest in, as will anyone with a taste for apple pie, which Julian is famous for. The relative nearness of various state, national and county parks is sure to please avid outdoorspeople, as is the scenic, fish-rich reservoir of Lake Cuyamacha (only about 8 miles to the southeast). Additionally, the area's high elevation treats residents to all four seasons, so there's never really a dull moment.
We stayed at the cottage for a short fall get away from the desert. It was perfect. The cottage was stocked with hot chocolate, teas, coffee, coffee maker, toaster, pots and pans and dishes for serving and preparing a meal. So cozy. The owners had redecorated to portray the fall season. Everything was just wonderful. I loved sitting on the back patio and reading and the bay window seat was perfect for napping or just enjoying the view . Even though the cottage is close to the owners home you feel very private. Comfortable bed, Direct T.V. , adequate kitchen; although the refrigerator is small. It is a little bit of a steep walk from the parking area to the cottage and there are a few steps inside to the sleeping area. Very quick drive into Julian, but too far to walk. The owners are very welcoming and ready to help in any way.
The cottage/cabin is super clean and nice and the owners pay attention to every detail. We loved the wooded setting and it is very quiet with a beautiful yard and comfy bed. I would recommend this lodging for couples wanting to spend time together. The location is great and it is close enough to town to enjoy the attractions but also far enough away to have the mountain cabin feel. Everything you need is provided and it is very organized. The cabin is very nicely decorated and we would love to stay there again. Thank you Diane & Bud!
Thus is our second time booking this cottage and we hope to return every year. Owners are very nice. Place is very close to Julian, which I was very happy with. I can wait to come back next year!!'
All my fiancé David wanted for his birthday was to spend a few relaxing days away from the city in Julian and he got just that thanks to Diane and Bud. First of all, when I reserved the cottage I noticed it was a studio and I wasn't sure if it would be large enough to be comfortable for for my fiancé, our daughter, and myself. However, when we arrived it was a lot more spacious than I expected and so cozy. This cottage was very clean and wonderfully decorated. It had everything we needed and Diane always made sure to ask if everything is okay. I loved the attention to detail and making sure that this cottage had all the things that any high-rated hotel suite may have had. The sheets were so thick, the towels were extremely plush, there were games to play, movies to watch, the dishes and utencils all matched, the appliances were of good quality, and most of all, it was relaxing and peaceful. I appreciated how this cottage made us feel like it was a home away from home. We will definitely be staying at this peaceful Julian cottage again. Thank you Diane and Bud.
My husband and I just enjoyed the most magical getaway at Bud and Diane's little cottage. It had ever amenity one could think of. We were able to hike, walk, shop, and just read and play cards. Having a kitchen was very helpful so that we could have snacks and meals at home. I highly recommend this warm blessed cottage.
Hubby and I stayed 2 nights in this adorable, clean, quiet, and well-furnished cottage. Located behind hosts' home (don't worry, they're very respectful of privacy, yet helpful when needed), this studio seems larger than it is because of its clever layout, a few steps up to the bed area and a window seat with cushion separate it from other living space. The hosts have thought of everything here: large, fluffy towels, with extras on hand; a gas fireplace (thank you, Buddy, for lighting it for us on an unexpected chilly night); ample kitchen utensils for a short stay, including the always crucial wine opener; small, apt-size frig with extra full-size frig outside, if needed; games in the drawers; clock radio large enough to see from the bed; fresh soap and shampoo in shower/tub; cute outdoor patio for spying wildlife (we didn't see any). We hiked nearby Five Oaks Trail (short, but straight up hill!), then rewarded ourselves down the hill at family-run Menghini Winery for Sunday afternoon wine tasting with live music - relaxing and fun. Yummy dinner at The Julian Grille. Overall, we loved our get-away at this great cottage and felt like we were a million miles away from urban civilization.
Tip: The bed is super comfy and squishy, but may be a bit too soft for those in need of a firm mattress.
Tip: Very cool, plaster tree in relief on the ceiling over the bed. Be sure to look up!
Tip: There is a hairdryer; it's in the bottom drawer by the TV, not in the bathroom.
Tip: This cottage is not close enough to walk to town at night as the winding road would be pitch black in the dark with no sidewalks.
Julian, a quaint town known for their apple pie and cider, attracts many visitors year round. Many come not only for the pie but to walk the Main Street stopping at each of the shops along the way. Others come for a range of activities from hiking and biking to fishing and horseback riding. Special activities or events happen almost every weekend.
