If you have been looking for that place to relax and escape from the stress, then look no more! Community has a lake, streams, tennis courts, pool, basketball courts, and playground.

This room also has a washer and dryer. The master bedroom and bunk room are opposite sides of the house and separated by the kitchen area and living room, creating privacy.

The house has a full bath with amazing water pressure in the shower. The kitchen is an eat-in kitchen with an adjoining dining room. The living room has a beautiful moss stone fireplace and looks out through two sets of sliding glass doors to an open meadow that can often be full of wandering elk. There is a large furnished front deck to enjoy drinking coffee at sunrise or a glass of wine at sunset. The small back patio has a gas grill. Right out the back door you can hike up the mountain through National Forest.

We have plenty of bikes, tennis racquets and outdoor toys to enjoy. Internet and Dish TV included. The cabin has a land line that allows you to receive long distance calls and call forwarding from your cell phone, as some cell carries do not work at the cabin.

Take a day trip to nearby Estes Park, Lyons, Boulder or Denver and return to the beauty and peace of our mountain home.

About Jason Innes

We are a family of five with three children, ages 9-14. We absolutely love this area and it is amazing for kids!

Jason Innes purchased this cabin in 2011

Why Jason Innes chose Lyons

Big Elk Meadows is a very private, mountain community with about 165 homes and cabins. About 1/3 of the properties are occupied year around. Big Elk is located 5 miles along rustic roads from US Highway 36 between Lyons and Estes Park, Colorado. It is surrounded by tens of thousands of acres of Roosevelt National Forest. The National Forest offers hiking, biking, mountain biking, hunting, horseback riding and lots of peace and tranquility. It is a great place for the children as the community offers a lake, 2 tennis courts, a basketball court, volleyball court, a baseball field, heated swimming pool, a picnic pavilion, and a playground.

There are hiking and horse trails in many directions into the National Forest. This forest area is known as area 20 by hunters. It is the most prolific elk hunting and deer hunting in the state of Colorado. Some residents bring their horse down from the common horse pasture and ready themselves for an extended horseback ride into the National Forest. There they can hunt, enjoy fishing in a mountain lake, watch deer and elk wander near. There is some world class trout fishing in the N. Saint Vrain River, not far away.

Off road vehicle enthusiasts can also enjoy the designated trails in the surrounding forest. There is a camp at Johnny Park, nearby, for ATV, four wheel drive and ORV lovers.

Big Elk Meadows is about 45 minutes from Boulder Colorado, about 1.25 hours from Denver and Denver International Airport. It is about 25 minutes from Estes Park and the continental divide.

Enjoy your vacation in the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Our cabin is located 16 miles from Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, 15 miles to Lyons, and 30 miles to Boulder.

Small rustic cabin at Big Elk Meadow

  • 5 of 5

My husband was at a conference in Denver and I brought our four kids out here to enjoy the outdoors...and we did!! From playing in the creek, hiking, biking the roads, 'climbing' the mountain out the back door and picking flowers. We were amazed by the number of hummingbirds we saw daily! The kids loved all sharing the same room! They did not like not having a dishwasher, but quickly learned that a luxury not a neccessity :) We are a tennis playing family but did not even get to the courts because of everything else that kept us busy. I can't testify firsthand, but the courts did not look in great shape if you are a more serious tennis player.

As stated in other reviews there is no groceries, restaurants or anything else close by. We only got in the car twice to go get my hubby from Denver and on the last day drove to Estes Park and RMNP! We will be back to explore those places more!

The owner was extremely helpful from the very first enquiry and provided answers to all my question. He even met us at the cabin when we arrived to show us around.

I was disappointed at how close the neighboring cabins were, but we never heard or saw anyone. This is not a luxury cabin, but having kids enjoying the outdoors so much totally made up for it.

great little cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at this cabin in Big Elk Meadows this June. We were looking for something remote and peaceful to relax in nature in between hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. We wanted to be away from the crowds and since both Estes Park and Rocky were both super crowded, we were really glad that we did. It was about a half hour drive each day into the park but it was worth it for us. The cabin is very comfortable and worked well for our family of four. We adjusted quickly to having only one bathroom. The only downside was the lack of dishwasher. A major plus was the wifi connection since our cell phones, even on Verizon, got NO service there. The owner was helpful and very easy to communicate with. The hummingbirds on the front porch was one of our favorite parts and we enjoyed watching them each evening as we relaxed. We would likely return to this rental if we come back to the area.

Very Nice Stay

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay here very much.

Pros: Enjoyed canoeing around one of the lakes. We put the canoe up on our SUV and took it the short 1/2 mile to the lake. There are also close hiking trails which were nice. Tons of birds, especially hummingbirds. Saw a couple of deer one evening, but not any other wildlife. The cabin is very well-stocked, more than the other 2-3 vacation rentals we've been at. Plenty of room for 4-5 people, but would probably start feeling cramped with more than that. Only 30 minutes to Estes Park. Owners were very helpful, and even proactively called to see if everything was good.

Cons: The only real con is the distance to any kind of shopping at all, including groceries. If you want to go anywhere away from the cabin (pick up groceries, go to a movie, get some ice cream), it's a 30 minute drive to either Estes Park or Lyons; there is nothing closer at all. The other minor con is that there are neighboring houses that are pretty close on each side. We barely saw or heard the neighbors, but if you want the cabin to be isolated from neighbors, you might be disappointed.

Rocky Mountain Stay

  • 5 of 5

Great location for visiting the Rocky Mountain National Forest, Estes Park, Lyons and Bolder. The cabin was clean and the kids loved the bunk beds. The cabin was a good size for a family of four. The owner was very helpful in providing information about the local area. We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful area. The kids also loved the pool, the basketball court and the softball field.

Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We had an enjoyable stay in your nice home. It was a little tight with 5 adults and 3 teenagers, but we managed just fine. The kids enjoyed the pool and tennis court. Adults enjoyed the many fishing spots. The setting is beautiful with the view of the meadow from the front deck. The cool weather was a welcom relief from the 100 degree heat we drove through to get there.
