The positive is that the property is in the middle of everything, across the ocean. The premises of the Islander Inn (where the property is situated) are nice and clean, with parking available on premises and nearby, there is a nice pool and hot tub, and both are well maintained by the Inn.
Now on the negative, there were a few issues with the condo we have rented from Gayle. The fact that there is visible need for for some updates on the condo is minor. Not sure what the updates in the property description are about (maybe the counter-top and the laminate floors)...
The main issue though, was the cleanliness. There were crumbles on almost every surface, from the kitchenette counter-top to the night tables, and the floors have probably not been cleaned in a long period, beside visible crumbles everywhere. I mentioned this to Gayle after check in, I even sent her some pictures. She said that she will sent the cleaners to clean again next day. That did not happen. To add to that, the sheets had stains on them, the carpets where old and stained, the lanai railing has not been cleaned in a long time, covered in bird poo, and we really felt uncomfortable touching anything.
As a result we tried to spend as little time as we could in the condo, and this was a very unpleasant experience overall. We travel often, and I'm yet to have seen a place that will be less clean than this condo.
What tops everything is the owner attitude, when I complained about the lack of cleaning. She replied that she will forward the picture to the cleaners .... It's funny that when I mentioned the cleaning fee, and she replied that that was to clean after my departure. So, the previous guests failed to pay, and that's why the property was not cleaned ? Also, getting some new sheets and some carpets cannot cost more than a few hundred dollars, that I assumed have been saved by charging a cleaning fee but not actually cleaning the property.
Overall a very bad experience, as a result I will be very selective moving forward with VRBO properties.
The Kona Islander Inn is in the perfect location for the beach, restaurants and shops. You can walk to everything and also enjoy the pool and the quietness of the well landscaped property. The price is fabulous compared to the much higher priced name-brand hotels just down the street. Our stay here was the last week of a 6 week trip on 4 of the Hawaiian islands staying in VRBO properties at each location. The condos at Kona Islander Inn are all privately owned and Gayle Mackey owns several condos at this location. The bad news is that the first one we checked into was in very poor condition and desperately needed a total renovation. We called Gayle and expressed our dissatisfaction and she responded immediately! We were moved to a fabulous condo that had been newly renovated with an upgraded location and a gorgeous view. Ask to see pictures of the specific condo you are renting but know that Gayle Mackey is great to work with and wants her customers to be satisfied. We look forward to renting from her again because of her responsiveness. We would definitely stay at the Kona Islander Inn again.
