My family and I were stunned by the beauty of Kate's home and it's setting. You simply could not ask for a more incredible view of the Salish Sea.
My husband and I were gently sung to sleep by the waves lapping on the rocks below us. And then, we were woken by the most intense sunrises. We cherished every moment.
Sitting on the large deck overlooking the sea was also phenomenal. We were able to use the fully stocked kitchen and dine el fresco each day.
We mostly sat outside when at the property because the weather was so good; however, the sitting room is also a relaxing area to gaze outside and deeply relax.
As a bonus, we saw orcas gliding by on TWO occasions! Can't beat that.
I highly recommend this property for a holiday- it will bring you lots of joy.
Thank you so much. It is so rewarding when people also enjoy that beautiful setting.
Beautiful, comfortable house, great view of Georgia Strait
A fine place for a week's stay. Clean, comfortable, roomy, well-stocked house in a quiet area right above the water.
A real treat
This property was spacious and had gorgeous views from both inside the house and the large deck. It was great to have a short walk down to the rock beach (steep steps though, so our 3yo needed some help) where we spent hours poking around the tidepools, looking at crabs, mussels, clams, fish, and starfish. We were visited by a lot of nature during our week stay - bald eagles, herons, deer; we even spotted a pod of orca whales swimming by one afternoon. Inside the house are many treasures as well: a huge collection of music, interesting artwork and photos, lots of fun board games, and plenty of cooking supplies. If you're coming in the summer, be prepared for fruit flies and ants. The island itself was fun to explore, too. This was a great destination for our family to celebrate my parents' 40th wedding anniversary. My kids (5yo and 3yo) asked if we could visit again.
Thank you so much for your kind review. I love when people experience all the wildlife just that deck has to offer. Amazing isn't it! And combing the foreshore is so special. I hope you do come back. Kate
Ocean front with 180 degree views
I visited Kate's property with friends this July and really would rate it 4.5 stars By far our favourite part of the stay was the many various ways to be with the sea and watch the incredible wildlife soar and swim by. We were actually greeted at the property by a beautiful young male deer who was awaiting us in the open veranda. From my bed in the lower level I could see and hear the ocean and the patio and huge living space windows give unparalleled access. We felt like we got to know the family through their many nicknacks, books and precious family momentos, many of which we tucked safely away during our stay. It should be noted that access to the beach requires a steady gate and footwear. One of our party was not able to access the rocky beach. There is also not a bathtub in the house, which is something that I typically look for in an accommodation. The house is walking distance to a beautiful old lighthouse (although you ll see more of the sunset from the house)and you ll encounter many grazing deer along your walk and seals will visit one you arrive. The kitchen was incredibly well stocked with spices and foodie style tools which made cooking easy and fun. We ate all our meals in. I'd recommend bringing most of your groceries, although there are options to replace ingredients once you arrive. In the little town centre we were happy to visit the soap shop (amazing owner) and the small natural product store (where we found helpful service and a great new pain management product reminiscent of homemade Tiger Balm). We also enjoyed the small Saturday farmers market and Japanese garden. On our last day we had lunch and drinks on the patio of the Groove which was amazing. Conveniently the restaurant is just a few minutes from the ferry. This is a location you ll want a car or strong legs, full panniers and a bike. Kate was a good communicator and diligent about making sure I received my deposit back in a timely manner. Thanks Kate!
Thank you for your kind words. The beauty of that view is the constantly changing vista..from wildlife to the sea to the cloud formations. One never grows bored with it. I am glad you were able to experience many of the island's features. We also have a fabulous music scene with very talented musicians playing at the Groove once a week and featured performers at other island venues. The house was not built with a bath tub, just the two walk-in showers. I will speculate it is to conserve water as the summers are especially dry and water conservation is just a fact of island life. I appreciate you taking the time to give a review. Kate
Great view but issues with renting from the US
As everyone has said the views make this house spectacular. The minute you walk up the stairs you see the ocean throughout the front room and the deck is great. The house itself would not be my first choice to return to with a family with children under the age of 16. The owner has a lot of glass decorations all over the house: on the short windowsills and tables, antique decorations on the floor and other breakable things which makes for staying on ones toes the entire time to make sure nothing is damaged. The house has an upstairs and downstairs that require steps to any lliving space so if you have issues with stairs you may want to take this into consideration. The beach is hard to get down to, as others have said, but once you make the treck down the steep steps it is nice. Mayne Island itself is wonderful and would recommend for anyone wanting a relaxing quiet vacation. The people on the island are very friendly.
My husband had some issues with renting the house. The owner did not take credit cards and wanted a wire transfer instead. This required an added fee from our bank on top of the cost of the house. Her bank also charged her a fee for the wire and she instructed that she would take that difference out of our deposit that we would get back. He told her it was her bank's fee and that we should not be responsible for it since this was the way she wanted the payment. The owner then mailed us back our depoist with a canadian check which made it more difficult for us to cash in the US. The transaction would have been much easier if she would be able to just take a credit card.
Thank you for your response.
Many banks charge a wire processing fee. Please familiarize yourself with your bank's policy as my deposit and balance must be paid in full.
I welcome children of all ages and I appreciate your attention to making sure the collectible items in my home were not harmed.
Great place and island
Family and friends really enjoyed the house. Felt very much like a shared home rather than a basic rental. It is right on the water and spent a lot of time walking the waterfront. The house has a great upstairs to cook, eat, and enjoy the view. There are lots of cookbooks for inspiration. We ate all but one meal at the house over two weeks. Local produce, baked goods, and the like were a real treat. Saw a good array of wildlife straight from the house and around. Heard and then saw a barred owl - beautiful and haunting. Kate was easy to work with and professional.
Mayne Island is the perfect Gulf Island for a year-round destination. The temperate climate, beautiful parks, beach accesses and hiking trails, activities and events make any season a great time to visit. Enjoy artists' galleries, shops, and restaurants. On Saturday mornings (May-October) enjoy the Farmer's Market. The museum, built in 1886, as a jail, and the Springwater Lodge and Pub, which is the longest continuously operating hotel and pub in British Columbia are great attractions.
Georgina Point Heritage Park & Lighthouse and the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve at Bennett Bay or a hike up Mount Parke to a spectacular viewpoint are some activities you can enjoy.
Use the putting green at Dinner Bay Park and view the magnificent Japanese Gardens while there. Experience the surrounding water by kayak, canoe or sailboat. Try your luck at fishing!
