About Mary McPhail Gray

I am retired from the Executive Senior Service in the Federal Government in D.C. I have visited Taos for 20 years and chose a home with the advantages of glorious views, quiet surroundings and access to great music, art, and cultural events. Most of my career has been as a University administrator and faculty member. My interests are music (playing the cello), golf, art, yoga, community service, working out at the spa, live music and cultural connections. I am active and continually learning new things in this Land of Enchantment.

Mary McPhail Gray purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Mary McPhail Gray chose Ranchos de Taos

I own 1 1/2 acres on the high mesa southwest of Taos. On my road is the Taos Golf Course, the University of New Mexico Taos campus and the Taos National Guard Armory--so it is well maintained. Since I am 1 mile from the edge of the Gorge of the Rio Grande hiking is wonderful and the sunsets and sunrises are spectacular. The casita is quite private and comfortable--it was well designed to take advantage of the views. I have a hot tub which renters can access. Nights are always cool mountain air.

What makes this cottage unique

The property is quiet and surrounded by sweeping mountain views---yet close enough to easily drive in to town for wonderful restaurants, great live music and any number of cultural festivals and celebrations. Archeological digs and ancient rock formations speak of the age of the land--and the history of all 3 cultures blend in a rich reality of our current world.

Very accommodating

  • 4 of 5

The property seemed to fit our needs and budget perfectly and the owner was amazingly accommodating when some unexpected water damage at the last minute prevented us from being able to stay at the property, the owner immediately contacted me and made other arrangement for our party of 3 including our dog. Everything worked out great and we were very happy despite the unexpected change.

Can't wait to go back!

  • 5 of 5

This casita was a lovely place to stay on a snowy weekend in Taos. Mary, the owner, thinks of everything to make it a homey, welcoming place. Lots of love and care have been put into the details, including fresh flowers and a candle on the dining table. We will be back to enjoy it once again in warmer weather.

Secluded get-away!

  • 4 of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed this Taos casita. I haven't stayed in Rancho before but loved the views and the center of town is not far away. It was really nice to be able to have my dog with me. The space is very open, well lit and clean. Very comfortable especially for one person. Only down side was the shower was lukewarm at best no matter how long I ran the water. Mary added some nice touches (flowers, welcoming card) which I appreciated.

Owner's Response: I am delighted this guest enjoyed her time! I am so sorry that she did not report anything about the shower temperature--as I would have adjusted it immediately.! I have an excellent plumber--it was a minor issue--now resolved.

Perfect casita for a quiet, but convenient stay!

  • 5 of 5

With the positive reviews, and helpful communication with Mary before our trip I already had high hopes. But my husband and I were in awe as we drove up to the casita and opened the doors. Beyond our expectations!

As this was our first visit to Taos we wanted to explore the area but also have a quiet place to come back to. This casita is located in the most ideal location, with panoramic views and sprawling landscapes, but also a quick 4 miles into town to walk the Plaza!

The casita was a perfect size for my husband, myself and our small dog! We never felt like we were crowded or 'cooped up' during our snowy Christmas. Mary has thought of EVERYTHING when it comes to stocking the casita! And she was so kind to offer us anything we needed during our stay. It literally is as comfortable as being at home (but with a better view!).

Not only have I already recommended this casita to friends who enjoy Taos, but my husband and I are planning more visits to Taos in the winter and the summer. We would not think of staying anywhere else!

Love This Place

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for several days last summer and enjoyed it so much we returned for a week this summer. If you enjoy walking, hiking, being away from it all - but not too far away - and mountain scenery, you will love it here. It would be a little crowded for four people, but for the two of us, it was perfect. Very clean and well appointed, and Mary, the owner, is so nice and looks out for your every need. We are looking forward to returning next year!

This casita is a great and peaceful home base in a special place

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a week here and we found this home and location to be delightful -- even better than advertised. It is located only a short drive South of the Taos tourist business, but that short drive gets you back into the sparsely-settled beauty of old Taos.

The casita is a short walk from a small canyon and river; it is a short drive to the Rio Grande Gorge area; it is surrounded by sage brush, big sky, and grand views.

The casita is quite spacious, and it is very well-designed and well-furnished. The home and grounds are very well maintained and attractive. The owner is an elegant woman who is as accessible or remote as you want her to be. The bed and the sofa are good sleeping surfaces. The windows and fans make for great air flow.

Two caveats, both in the minor, "personal preference" category: 1) The casita is a short drive from good grocery shopping and also to downtown Taos, but it is such a traffic squeeze driving through Taos, if you plan to do daily activities North of town, such as at the ski area, you might be better off renting on the North side.

2) The wireless in the casita was slow/sporadic at times, which was mildly frustrating but in hindsight would have been better viewed as yet another reason to get off the computer.
