Cross over the Rooselvelt Campobello Memorial Bridge from Lubec, ME, onto Campobello Island to visit the The Rooselvelt Campobello International Park, the only international park in the world. The restored Rooselvelt summer home is fun for
young and old and 'Tea With Eleanor' is offered 7 days a week during the summer season (be sure to get those tickets by 10AM). The Herring Cove Provential Park and Golf Course has 9 holes. You will tee off overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The East Quoddy Lighthouse is open to enjoy during the summer season and is a cool place to go when the temperature gets over 72 degrees. The Campobello Public Library and Museum is another historic site to see. It is a short walk from the house. Everyone can enjoy bird watching, whale watching, easy hikes and harbors with working and sailing boats galore.
Year Purchased: 2007
About the owner: This home was built by one of Campobello's oldest families, the Gough family in 1904. After retiring with 40 years in the Leon County School system, Dave and Lydia purchased the house in 2007 to begin refurbishing it. The first thing they did was paint it periwinkle blue. Islanders nickname it the 'Barney House' because it's the large, purple house on the hill. Dave and Lydia work every spring on the house and have refurbished the main house entirely. We are still working on the second side of the house and the additional 3 bedrooms should be available by the summer of 2013. We are both retired and live in Florida most of the year. Our active, Volunteer of the Year, 92 year old father, Rocco, and more active 4 year old grandson keep us busy and happy for months on end. Still, there is nothing like the relief from the Florida heat when we visit Friars Bay Retreat 'just for fun'. We're learning to play golf at the golf course FDR built, in spite of the local sheep farmers. We look forward to years of working and playing on the island and really love sharing the place with others for part of the summer.
Why the Owner Chose Welshpool, NB, Canada:
Cross over the Rooselvelt Memorial Bridge onto the only International Park in the world, The Rooselvelt International Park on Campobello Island. The restored Rooselvelt summer home is fun and interesting for young and old because the family had children, sailboats, tennis and so much more. 'Tea With Eleanor' is offered 7 days a week during the summer season (be sure to get those tickets before 10AM). The Herring Cove Provential Park and Golf Course has 9 holes and a nice little club house with very good eats and drinks. You will tee off with the Atlantic Ocean just to your left. The East Quoddy Lighthouse is open to enjoy during the summer season and is a cool (temp wise) place to go when the temperature gets over 72 degrees. The Campobello Public Library and Museum is another historic site to see. It is a short walk from the house. All ages enjoy bird watching, whale watching, easy hikes and harbors with working and sailing boats galore.
The Unique Benefits at this Chateau / Country House:
When we moved to Campobello we had not done any research about the island, so to speak. We simply fell in love with the house, long distance, from a picture. When we visited the first time, in the snow, the idea of taking on a project like this was almost overwhelming. There was so much work to do and it is so far away from where we are retired in Florida. But it was, and is, one of those places that makes you feel - well - different and good and happy and relaxed all at once - when you step over the doorway. We had a vision and with those small samples of rooms and colors from Home Depot, (seriously, we had never done anything like this) we've refurbished and redecorated every room on the main side of the house. But, more than that, we've seen whales, lots of times. We sit and watch seals play, 7 days a week if we want. We go the the US side and visit towns and small cities founded in 1747!!!! We love to eat on the deck and cook on the grill. And we really love eating at the wonderful restaurants on the island and across the Rooselvelt Bridge in Lubec, ME. Our very favorite time in the area is Pirate Days - a dual-city festival every year on the US side. We dress like pirates, we dress our 2 Shitzus like pirates and we hang out with other people doing the same thing for a few days each year. Besides all of this we have met and become friends with families who've lived there for generations. We've worked with the library and come to love the history of the island. Eleanor Rooselvelt used to ride her bike on North Road, in front of the house, to the old Post Office and the only phone on the island. And then there are the whales. It's become almost a spiritual experience finding a way to spend some time with these amazing animals. Sometimes we just take a 10 minute drive to the lighthouse to spend an hour of listening to the local guys talk about the day, the weather, the tides, the past.....it's the very best time ever.
