The Behrends Cabin at Agarita Creek, Fredericksburg, TX Ranch Retreat, 2/1

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,200 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

A secluded ranch hideaway, just minutes from all that is Fredericksburg

The Behrends Cabin is one of two German chink style log cabins located at Agarita Creek, a 170 acre heritage sheep ranch just ten minutes from the heart of Fredericksburg, Texas, in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The approximately 1200 sq. ft. two story cabin, completed in 2009, features an exposed log interior, stained concrete floors, a wooden cathedral ceiling, rustic pine furniture, Talavera tile from Mexico, and Indian blankets. The cabins reflect and respect all of the various peoples who have called this land home.

There is a living and dining area and a fully-equipped modern kitchen with stoneware, silverware, cookware, and just about every kind of kitchen gadget you can imagine. One bedroom is located downstairs, as is a full bath. There is a large sleeping loft upstairs, substantially the same size as the downstairs bedroom. All beds are queen size. The Behrends Cabin sleeps four.

Agarita Creek is a retreat from the everyday. There is no television service to the cabins, although there are small televisions for watching movies (and there is a supply of movies in the cabin as well). There are board games and books for that rare hill country rainy day. There is internet service to the main house and probably to your smart phone. There is no wireless internet service to the cabin. There is no telephone, other than your cell phone (should you choose to bring it)..

Just outside the front door is an ample porch running the width of the cabin, which is perfect for watching the sun set over the beautiful creek canyon below. The cabin has its own fire pit for late night campfires. A grill is available for guest use.

The ranch is home to heritage Jacob and Navajo sheep, a small herd of Dexter cows, a wide array of chickens, four donkeys, and a livestock guardian dog named Beatrice. Children are encouraged, and children of all ages are invited to engage in ongoing ranch activities if and as they wish.

The ranch terrain is varied, and provides ample opportunity for walking, hiking, or just observing wildlife and flora and fauna. The ranch features white-tail and axis deer, Rio Grande turkeys, rabbits, a large variety of birds, and the occasional bobcat. Virtually every tree or shrub native to the Edwards Plateau exists somewhere on the ranch.

Fredericksburg is the most popular tourist destination in the Texas Hill Country, with its many vineyards and wineries, unique shopping and restaurants, vibrant live music scene, world class historical museum, and outdoor recreational opportunities. Visitors never lack for something to do, unless they choose to do nothing but take in a little rest and relaxation.

What gratifies us is that our guests tend to return again and again over the years, considering the ranch to be their home away from home whenever they visit the hill country. This is the only real accurate measure of our success in sharing a place that is so special to us.

Wonderful, peaceful, luxury Hill Country experience 13 minutes from downtown Fredericksburg

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spend 5 days at the cabin and had a wonderful time. We enjoyed the beautiful, peaceful surroundings. But we also enjoyed interacting with the sheep, Beatrice the sheep dog, chickens, jack rabbits, mules, etc. on the ranch. You pretty much have free reign to explore the 170 beautiful, hilly acres, and we took advantage of it several times. But you are still really close to Fredericksburg with all its wonderful restaurants and historic sites.

We ate at Jennies, Peach Tree Restaurant, Fredericksburg Pie Company, Old German Bakery and Crossroads Steakhouse - all were yummy! There are a ton of wineries, vineyards and peach orchards nearby.

We hiked up Cross Mountain (short little hike right in town) and the Enchanted Rock (25 minutes north) and took the 1.5 hour drive SW to hike at Lost Maples.

The cabin was beautiful and had all the necessary dishes and cooking utensils. The deck has a wonderful view. Also, note they have added chairs for the deck, which was mentioned as needed in an earlier review. Beverly was great to work with, and supplied coffee and frozen breakfast goodies (the chickens were on winter sabbatical, so we missed out on fresh eggs). Our Verizon phones had 4G inside the cabin, so we had good access to the internet through them.

I highly recommend the cabin!

Peaceful Setting

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely time at your restful and lovely cabin on the farm. Everything was warm and welcoming. My only suggestion would be to go through the kitchen utensils and discard the older and less 'useful' cutlery.

Perfect hill country respite

  • 5 of 5

We were very impressed with the Behrends cabin and very much enjoyed our stay. Our hosts were more than accommodating, from leaving the porch light on for our late night arrival, to having fresh eggs and freezer pastries available for our breakfasts, to providing all the cookware and dinnerware we needed to cook our own meals. The property is clean and quiet, and the hosts were always quick to return messages. We would definitely return, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend these cabins to anyone. A MUCH better alternative to a traditional hotel or suite.

Gorgeous property and lovely cabin. Very clean and had all the cooking utensils we needed. It was a pleasant surprise to have farm fresh eggs, coffee and breakfast pastries stocked upon arrival. My 8 year old loved exploring, visiting the sheep and chickens and using the firepit to roast marshmallows. The cabin was a perfect setup for us four girls for our family girls getaway. The location was close enough to town and wineries but far enough away to enjoy the countryside and stars at night. Beverly was a wonderful hostess and greeted us when we got there. She also lended us some flour for our recipe one night and promptly sprayed for wasps when she noticed some lingering on the porch. We had a perfect vacation and hope to come back again soon!

Hill Country Haven

  • 5 of 5

The Behrends Cabin was comfortable and quiet - a perfect retreat. We are birders and didn't have to leave the property to walk through a great habitat. Beverly was more than helpful with the cabin and with knowledge of the area including, but not limited to restaurants, automotive services, laundry and library.
