Born and raised in central Illinois, our family has been coming to the Islamorada, Florida Keys area for the past 14 years and have completely fallen in love with it. We recently took the plunge and bought this gorgeous home to enjoy with family and friends. We would be happy to talk to you about the 'must see' places to visit and dine while you are visiting the area.
Doug purchased this House in 2012
Why Doug chose Tavernier
Our home is located on the very southern part of Tavernier right next to Islamorada. The home has undergone a $400,000 renovation. It is beautifully furnished with Ethan Allen furniture and has lush tropical greenery throughout the property. The pocket doors across the front of the home completely open up to the upper outdoor veranda that runs the entire length of the home for that Florida Keys home feel. On the lower level by the pool and boat dock, there is an outdoor shower, fish fillet station and stairs that lead right into the ocean water. There is a large Weber stainless steel grill for cooking out.
What makes this House unique
You will love the beautiful ocean view and all there is to offer in the area such as great fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, water sports, shopping, local restaurants or just hanging out at the pool. We are close to the Tavernier Marina, Bud and Mary's Marina and Robbie's Marina. The Winne Dixie grocery store is a three minute drive away. Theater of the Sea and John Pennecamp State Park is nearby. There is nothing like the laid back atmosphere of the Keys. Relax at one of the many open air restaurants, have a cold drink a great meal and listen to live music while watching a spectacular sunset.

A great week in the sun...can't wait to come back.
This is a beautiful and fun house. We stayed for a week (2 adults and three kids ages 13, 11 and 8). We enjoyed the pool every day, as well as the ping pong table.
We grilled fish that we bought at Casamars right on the poolside grill.
We also had dinner out a few nights:
Snappers, super close to the house, and a great location on the water, but a very limited "Irmageddon menu" while they get their kitchen back up and running. Fun place to hang out though, and good to support them as they get back to full operations. Live music, relaxed. Fish tacos were very good.
Bayside Grille - we scored a table upstairs right before the sunset. Amazing and beautiful view for dinner, and the best food we had on our trip.
Snookys - Also a great view and fun vibe...don't go if you are in a hurry or very hungry though. Service was pleasant but definitely beach paced!
We had lunch at Loreleis...also fun and great shrimp.
We also went to Theater of the Sea. Super fun day out, and so informative about the animals they have rescued. We loved the bottomless boat and the dolphin show. The kids did the stingray interaction, and it was wonderful. Way more "natural" than another they had done previously.
We rented a boat for a day out of Islamorada and went out to Hens & Chickens reef and spent hours snorkeling, and some time swimming at the sandbar.
We also slept a lot, and made wonderful poolside memories. We were sad to leave, and cannot wait to return.

Everything about this house was perfect. I stay in the keys frequently but this has by far been the best property I have ever experienced.
Beautiful home, well kept
The home and pool were stunning. It's a little tricky to get in and out of the channel at low tide with a larger boat, we have a 25 ft center console, but it was def doable. Also trailer parking is sticky so might be worth your while to pay $125 to leave it at mangrove marina down the street for the week. Overall excellent home! Thanks for having us! Oh and the hammock chairs are amazing!
Let me start by saying that house is absolutely beautiful and they have clearly put a lot of thought into all of the details. It was also spotlessly clean which is ore important than anything else. The pool was amazing as well- perfect temp to still swim even though the weather wasn't ideal during our stay.
A couple of issues we faced- the sofa bed cover was filthy and had a pair of dirty socks stuffed in it when we opened it. It is also important to note that there is NO ACCESS at all to the main house from the first floor/pool deck. This was an issue for us since that was where we planned for my 9 and 10 year old sons to sleep. The sofa bed is also awfully uncomfortable. My 10 year old couldn't even sleep on it, so we ended up short a bed for the 7 of us and my one son had to sleep on the sofa upstairs for the week, so if you plan to use the sofa bed, plan accordingly and bring something additional to put on top of the mattress.
Something else we didn't expect to see was the entire canal covered in a thick layer of seaweed. Clearly this is not something the homeowner can control, but it did make fishing from the dock difficult (which is something my boys spend hours doing) and getting out in the kayaks even more difficult since we had to push through it. Granted, this is not an issue if you're not planning on these particular types of activities.
All in all we had a wonderful stay with just a couple of minor hiccups. Another great week in the Keys!!
Our housekeeping staff is usually very good at cleaning up after our guests and that is part of the reason we have received a 5-star rating from every responding guest that has stayed at our home. It seems that maybe the guests who stayed there prior to this family’s stay folded up the dirty sheets in the bed and the cleaning staff did not know that someone had slept in the bed. We have alerted the cleaning staff to check the sofa bed every time they clean our home to make sure dirty sheets are not folded up in the sofa bed. Most homes of this style throughout the Florida Keys have this type of floorplan where the lower level only is accessible to the upstairs via an outdoor stairway.
There are times that the tide and winds will bring in seaweed. It is nothing that we can control, but it usually is not there long and is taken out by the tide and wind as well. We stay at our home five to six times per year and occasionally there has been the seaweed. This is something that happens when you have direct access to the ocean.
