Our own well-beloved Victorian Queen Anne home, in a beautiful Kalamazoo local historic district.

Within walking distance of downtown Kalamazoo and near Kalamazoo College and WMU campuses

Pet and family friendly. Absolutely.

4 bedrooms upstairs. Master with queen bed and en suite bath; second bedroom with comfy pull-out queen sofa. Third and fourth bedrooms used as library and sun room, the latter with an outdoor deck. The sun room has trundle twins; and we have a high-end Aerobed that can be set up in the small library, also quite comfortable! The downstairs living room also has a large Arts & Crafts sofa (see pics) that can accommodate an adult frame.

Library is complete with lots and lots of books! If you love history, theology, mysteries, good literature or historical preservation you're in luck. Also old-school record player with excellent classical record and CD collection - we love music.

Sun room opens onto spacious upper deck, including umbrella table and seating for four, overlooking green backyard with mature oaks; beautiful garden, brick patio, and rose garden (we love having dinner on the upper deck!)

Glowing hardwood floors throughout.

Shady wraparound porch with comfortable wicker furniture

Fully stocked kitchen with pantry, including Bosch dishwasher and all staples available for your use. Dacor stove and top-of-the-line Samsung fridge.

All silverware, pots/pans, small appliances including our Pasquini cappuccino maker (!) and a Mazzer burr coffee grinder. Cuisinart, KitchenAid blender, etc.

Fully stocked spice drawer and many other supplies necessary for cooking up a storm.

Also: foyer, expansive living room with reader-friendly furniture , formal dining room, comfy family room.

Gas, water, electric included (we have a terrific Trane AC unit)

All linens, towels, and necessaries for your stay (paper products, dishwasher and small appliances, etc.). Fisher Paykel washer/dryer and half-bath in basement.

Plasma television with expanded basic AT&T cable; CD/DVD player; wireless for your computer needs.

Kalamazoo was incorporated in the 1830s and is a grand old town with modern artistic flair; we were named one of the 'Cool Cities' in Michigan in 2008! Our area, called West Main Hill, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city-- famous Henderson Castle, built in the 1870s, is across the street from us. The neighborhood is tree-lined and has curvilinear streets that are a joy to walk or bike. The city has fine and casual dining, good local shopping and unique boutiques in the pedestrian-friendly downtown; a lovely farmer’s market on Wednesdays and Saturdays; a Nature Center and the KalHaven trail for walking/biking; many summer music and other festivals downtown (check out the Arcadia Festival Site for goings-on!), antiquing, a terrific central Library----- basically all the necessities you’d need for a delightful stay. We are a three minute walk from Kalamazoo College’s beautiful Georgian quadrangle. We are 30 minutes east of Lake Michigan, and the lovely beach at South Haven. We’re 50 minutes from Grand Rapids, Michigan’s largest city which is also fun to explore; we’re 2.5 hr. drive from Chicago. Local highlights to visit also include Saugatuck (a great artist’s area on the coast of Lake Michigan, a 45 minutes drive), Grand Haven further north; and the arable land of SW Michigan with its vast orchards and wine growers. There’s also the Chocolate Garden in Coloma, MI which has the best truffles on the planet! ;-)

About Elaine L Wickstrom

My husband and I are both Michiganders, one from the Detroit/Dearborn area the other from Lansing. We're academic types into history and religion; the hubby attended MSU and Yale, and I attended Kalamazoo College and the University of Chicago. We love living in Kalamazoo and part-time at our pied-a-terre in Chicago!

Elaine L Wickstrom purchased this house in 1996

Why Elaine L Wickstrom chose Kalamazoo

We married and moved into 1325 Grand because we looooove older homes with lots of character and redolent with history. This place hasn't disappointed us....we're always 'lovin' on the house,' because these homes are living and breathing treasures that need care and attention. Kalamazoo is a city which also has 'town' qualities: unique areas, an interesting past history; it's also a College town with all the culture and interest inherent in that quality-- this is just a great place to live and work.

What makes this house unique

Folks, we're talking Queen Anne eye-candy here. Gorgeous hardwood, thick trim and built-ins, a great fireplace surround; a lovely wrap-around porch with seating for tea, plus a sun deck upstairs fitted out with a high-end umbrella table with comfy chairs! There is a small triangulate park that separates us from the larger street, so you get to look at more trees and beautiful homes on either side and in front. We're also close to downtown-- great location!

Close to Everything, Delightful setting.

  • 5 of 5

I think we ate meals at 4 different tables and still did not take full advantage of all this home has to offer. It was incredibly relaxing, quiet neighborhood, but just blocks from Kalamazoo's main thoroughfares. Getting to all our activities was a breeze. We stayed with two kids ages 6 and 11 and they loved having their own cozy places to read. Elaine and John were very helpful getting us situated and familiar with the home and surroundings.
