Our home, High Desert Haven, offers 1200 square feet of quiet get-away space… for up to 6 guests. It’s not fancy, but quite cozy and comfortable, and has been well cared for over the years. It’s decorated in an eclectic/rustic motif, with many artsy touches throughout! We are located on a quiet cul-de-sac in a friendly neighborhood of Crooked River Ranch. Within Crooked River Ranch itself, you will find golf, swimming, walks & hikes, and fabulous fly fishing in the Deschutes River. Many Ranch roads are paved with little traffic - great for road biking. We are within a half hour's drive of Smith Rock State Park, a world-renowned rock climbing and hiking paradise. A bit farther away you'll find Lake Billy Chinook for boating, water-skiing, and sailing (about 45 mins) and beautiful mountain peaks for skiing, climbing, and hiking (1 to 1-1/2 hours). We provide local guide books to whet your appetite for adventure!

Inside, you’ll find two bedrooms with queen beds, two baths, an entry/laundry room and an open living/dining/kitchen area with a full-size pool table and queen sleeper-sofa. Three large picture windows and a sliding door in the great room connect you with the outdoors and our lovely mountain views! The kitchen is well equipped, with extra appliances and a variety of cook and bake ware, along with a gas grill on the deck. There is a spacious eating bar for three, and the antique oak dining table seats six with the available leaf. Cold-weather guests can enjoy the warmth and ambiance of a fire in our free-standing propane stove, and A/C is available, though seldom needed due to our cool evening breezes and energy efficient construction.

Wireless high speed internet is available, and the living room and master bedroom have large screen TVs with Blu-Ray-Wifi DVD players. Cable TV service is available in the living room, and there's a mini-stereo with iPod dock and auxiliary input. We have a great selection of games, puzzles, CDs, and books; if you enjoy watching DVDs please bring them with you! You'll find a deep laundry tub, washer and dryer in the laundry room, along with implements for cleaning. A covered, wrap-around deck surrounds three sides of the house, allowing you to select from many different sitting/eating areas. You are likely to see deer, jackrabbits, coyotes and abundant birdlife... as well as spectacular sunsets! A 2-car garage with workbench and lots of storage space, as well as a covered carport, are included.

Our smoke-free home would make a perfect retreat for a musician, artist or writer looking for uninterrupted work time... or for adventure seekers planning to enjoy the abundant beauty and recreational possibilities of the area. Note: We are located 12 miles from the nearest full-service grocery store. Please keep this in mind as you plan your stay!

About Debbie at Crooked River Realty

I am a native of the Willamette Valley in Oregon... on the rainy side of the state. Growing up as an avid outdoor enthusiast, I thought it would be heaven to live in Central Oregon, so you can imagine how thrilled I was when my parents, John and Mary, purchased property at Crooked River Ranch. At the time, I was in Colorado raising my sons, Kevin and Kyle, but we made numerous trips over the years and fell in love with their High Desert Haven. Not only did it provide wonderful family time, but it was the gateway to so many outdoor adventures in the Oregon Cascades... skiing, mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, climbing and motorcycling! As their only child, I inherited the Haven in 2011. My husband, Leo, and I updated significant areas of the home with new windows, wood laminate flooring throughout the living area, and many other changes. I live in Colorado most of the year now, but continue to cherish the time I am able to spend here on the Ranch.

Debbie at Crooked River Realty purchased this cabin in 1990

Why Debbie at Crooked River Realty chose Central Oregon

In 1990, my parents, John and Mary, were spending winters in Arizona and summers in the Salem area. Introduced to Crooked River Ranch by friends who had recently purchased property, they quickly followed suit, first buying the lot across the street from our current home. As they contemplated the development of that piece of land, they continued to wander across the street to the vacant lot… to climb the big rock and gaze out at the mountains, wishing their home could sit right there. One day, as Dad walked through the sage on that lot, he found a sign that read 'Own a piece of the rock'... with a phone number. A few calls later they became the proud owners of 8430, and began 20 years of full-time living here. John was a master machinist and jack-of-all-trades, and applied his skills both at home and for the CRR Fire Department and Water Company. As a fun project, he built the windmill that stands on the big rock now. You can see evidence of his creativity and workmanship all over the property! Mary loved the birds, especially the quail. She enjoyed watching the deer cavort with their fawns in the yard, and photographed many amazing sunsets over Mt. Jefferson. This truly was their haven and happy home for over two decades!

What makes this cabin unique

We are located on one acre in a rural subdivision, 12 miles from the highway and the nearest full-service grocery store. This affords us plenty of peace and quiet, but should be considered in your planning! Our small commercial area (5.5 miles from the house) does have a convenience store/gas station, as well as the Sandbagger and the Big Dog, both of which offer drinks, great food and friendly service!

Amazing views! That is what you will say when you see this place. If you want the perfect place to stay this is it. The house is very nice and comfortable. But the best part is the breath taking mountain views! I highly recommend high desert haven.

Perfect home base for adventuring!

  • 5 of 5

Loved our New Year's week stay at High Desert Haven! The house was warm and ready when we arrived, has a well-stocked kitchen (any pot/pan/kitchen gadget you need + the usual condiments in the fridge). It was nice to not feel like I had to pack half my kitchen just to make something to eat. We took advantage of the nice Aussie grill for burgers and steaks one night, while watching yet another gorgeous sunset from the deck. The beds are very comfy and the pool table a big hit. We found the home to be a great home base for daily adventures, and what a delight to come back late each afternoon to the mountain views and cozy gas fireplace. We read several of the books in the eclectic collection as well as checked out some of the local field guides for ideas on things to do/see. The house was the prefect size for two adults, two teen girls and two dogs - and that's without needing to pull out the hide-a-bed. I agree with a previous reviewer who said the house felt like a friend's house you visit, and not like a rental. Big bonus was being able to read about the family history and enjoy your parent's touches in the house - just a delight. Thank you so much - we had a great visit.

Oregon Desert getaway

  • 5 of 5

This place is super fantastic from the inspiring sunsets over the mountains to waking up with deer grazing for their morning breakfast. With near by Smith rock you do not have to travel far to enjoy some of the great sights that the desert has to offer. Redmond and Bend are close enough that if you want to spend sometime there you could but with the all the wonderful sights in the area their is no need. This house has everything you need and then some to cook some fantastic meals. I have already recommended this place to many people for their future vacations. We had lots of fun.

Didn't want to leave...

  • 5 of 5

From the minute we walked in we felt like we were home. The view is picture perfect. There was everything you could need and more. I never felt like we were in a typical rental unit. This was like a friends home that you could visit anytime. We enjoyed reading about your family and all the photos. Thank you for sharing your home with us. This was my first trip to Crooked River and I can't wait to come back.

A Little piece of Heaven here on earth.

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Sue for having us stay at your home. A very beautiful place to stay, a little piece of heaven here on earth, so close to everything. Love steelhead falls never in my younger years I did what I did at 58, diving off the top of the falls was so awesome and the kids enjoyed jumping off the cliffs into the water, Very peaceful at night and the dear were every where. We cant forget Smith Rock the 4:30 am hike was incredible made it to the top just as the morning has broken. Your property was very clean and taken care of inside and out . I would recommend this vacation rental for those who love something Beautiful!!!
